This 3 Body Problem scene was subtly terrifying. Mike Evans (Jonathan Pryce) tells the San Ti that humans lie which scares them off, to which their reaction honestly almost scares us off 😬

The San Ti don't lie but they do deceive. The original San Ti pacifist receiver, said no not respond which means the intention was always hostile. Perhaps enslavement was the original plan, but the Red Riding Hood story turned it from hostile intentions to eradication 💀

@@NRV0 This scene came off a little differently in the books, it was actually a reaffirmation of the aliens needing Mike's organization to help them defeat humanity. Humanity was fucked when the aliens found out where earth was in the first place, they never intended to come in peace. These aliens don't even know what lying is, they shouldn't even have a concept of trust or mistrust because why would you need it when you cannot lie? So here instead of the aliens being like "fuck you lying ass humans" it was more like "oh shit we can't underestimate you lying ass humans, tell us more." So it was actually kind of a power play for Mike and not like how he came off as weak in this scene

During that little pause, the san ti changed their entire plan, scrapping the coexisting one for the conquering one. That pause is the time it took for them to iterate through all scenarios possible and make a decision that will dictate the next 400 years

I'm not sure their original plan was to coexist with humans. It seems that the San-Ti only wanted to have contact with a small group of human supporters so that the conquest of Earth would go smoothly. As a result of this dialogue, the San Ti realized that they could not trust people, and therefore they should not conduct intelligence work on Earth with the participation of people.

So I’m a little confused, were the San Tei really planning on co-existing? When they first replied to the radio broadcast one of the San Tei stated “you’re lucky im a pacifist” “if you respond your planet is fucked” “do not respond” So is it really fair to say that they wanted to actually co exist? Or did they plan letting only a few humans lives?

People in the comments really don't seem to get it, the point of this scene was never that the San Ti don't understand the concept of lying or that they never lie themselves. It's that they normally don't have to fear lies since they can all read each others mind. A San Ti can never directly lie to another San Ti. What scared them isn't that Mike lied, it's that they couldn't tell that Mike was lying to them until he told them.

According to the scene, they don't understand metaphors or abstractions, but I think it's unrealistic, as abstraction is a critical element of any intelligence. Even natural numbers like 3 are abstractions: 3 doesn't exist in the real but exists as a representation of all groups of 3 from anything. Similarly all mathematics, scientific model, etc. are abstractions. What you say makes more sense.

The symbolism in this scene is pretty brilliant to me. The story they chose isn’t just a throwaway. Little Red Riding Hood had no anxiety about the world she inhabited, and it became her downfall. She was safe in her domain, and never feared the predators that might lurk in the forest. Imagine a species that only has existential anxiety and dread over their planet’s capacity to kill them. We cannot even hope to understand what being “afraid” means for a species like that.

i don't think finding a habitable world they can use is as easy as you think. they would need to deal with the world's current inhabitant's, the distance would be ridiculously far, even for the closest star system to them which is us. they would also need to pinpoint a location out of hundreds of billions of stars. even as an advanced race the sheer size of the universe provides major setbacks. and thats not even starting on the possible consequences of interstellar travel, avoiding objects floating in space. sending all those resources to another planet is a huge gamble. In the books the San ti do not lie because their intelligence is collective. Their thoughts and feelings are connected to all other San-ti therefore it is impossible for them to hide their thoughts and feelings from others, making lying impossible for them. I have not read the books, so maybe there is a better explanation, but at least in the show presently, this scene doesn't sit right with me. 1. The San-Ti have been spying on humans using Sophons and can see, and hear EVERYTHING that's going on. Clearly, they should've been able to observe that humans do lie, cheat, steal etc etc. It's incomprehensible that it's suddenly a revelation to them based on just one reading of Red Riding Hood?!!!!!!! 2. They themselves have been manipulating the physical events that people on Earth can see to cause panic and mass hysteria - phantom readings in the particle accelerators, countdowns on retinas, stars blinking etc etc. San-Ti cutely term it as "showing miracles", whereas it's just presenting a fake reality. Why then become so touchy-feely about the ability of humans to "lie"?! They aren't so pure either. 3. As they are sort of omnipresent, even if Mike Evans is caught lying later on, they could've easily eliminated him? Are they so short-sighted so as to completely abandon him, overlooking all he has done for them till now???? 4. And despite seemingly getting paranoid about the ability of humans to lie, they anyways end up contacting Tatiana to do their bidding!!! So why abandon Evans??

They tried to destroy the science only because the human civilization evolved too fast and after 400 years they couldn't rule the humans, and that's their desire, to rule the humans. Your desire to destroy a wasp nest only occur when a wasp nest can hurt you. The only desire to then before the fuckup is control the spread of human science, like a simple animal control. 3. They couldn't trust Mike Evans, just after the humans decide to fight back they decide to create another cult of Lord.

I think I can give some answers to your questions, they were only able to spy on humans not long ago, they will find out about human lie eventually, Evans told them that story before the sophons arrived and that is a new concept for them. they can't lie but humans can so they are using our minds to lie to themselves and show them what they want to see. if you read the book you realize, what they do are just turn humans again each other, just like the story, the little girl didn't lie but she played along . Evans ,Tatiana and Ye are all the same to them, can you tell the difference between bugs? one maybe done more than the other, but the san-ti still have to do everything themself, one way or the other they will get what they want sooner or later.

San-Ti people don't lie, because they don't have mouths, their minds are transparent, so they just think and other San-Ti people will know what they are thinking. Therefore, they don't have the concept of lying at first, and they can't distinguish the difference between saying and thinking, but after they start contacting humans, they learn how to hide their thoughts from humans or even lie to humans. But the Tatiana part is also confusing to me tho, she is an original character from the show. According to the book, San-Ti should have abandoned all ETO members after this conversation.

I'm confused as to why the San Ti don't understand the concept of a story when the game itself is a story. I am aware that in the books, the followers made the VR headset and that the technology is a lot simpler. But it seems like in the show, the implication is that the aliens made it, or at least provided earth with the technology. Furthermore, did they not imply that the sword lady is meant to be one of the San Ti? If both of, or at least one of these things are true, then shouldn't the San Ti be aware of the story in the game? If they are, then why would the concept of a story confuse them? The San-Ti obviously can deal with probability ranges if they can handle interstellar travel and quantum computing. There does not need to be a pure deterministic mathematical answer of absolute truth for a range of probabilities to properly inform policy. Similarly, when dealing with others who may not be truthful, there is a range of possibilities based on what is in their own self interest to have to account for. If they can use quantum computing, then they should have worked out those possibilities and developed appropriate mitigations instead of just declaring humanity evil. Give the author credit for coming up with a reason that aliens would want to conquer or wipe out humanity even with a society that is as advanced as their technology instead of just using the old trope of a society with incredibly advanced technology to still have a medieval feudal imperial society, but this is where the story fails to sell that as a key underlying premise.
@manupandey8219
@manupandey8219 5 месяцев назад
But here's a question for you: do you think the San-Ti government would have some similar problems that our government faces. For example: do you think the San-Ti government would always be truthful or even always do what's in the interest of everyone in their society? If you think yes, then regardless of the scientific advancement, there's a chance they would ignore calculations and do the politically correct thing and declare the human race evil. But even if they are always truthful or do things in the interest of everyone: remember, the San-Ti said that fear has allowed them to survive this long. If this is the case, then it's easy for them to come to a decision to eliminate the race based on pure survival instincts of fear (which they seem to value alot more than we do).

@@mrp1kles Well, yes, I know what the intent behind making the characters look human was. My point was, if the San-Ti associated something as innocuous as the allegory of Little Red Riding Hood with lying, even when it was just a way to use a hypothetical plot to make a point, then isn’t using human characters to make the game more familiar just them doing the exact same thing they said they hate and can’t do? @@ZhangK71 San Ti did provide their techs to help realize the game (using Sophon's insane computational power for simulation and sensory interfacing), but it was the ETO that designed the game itself. So the psychological manipulations in the game: using human figures to create more sympathy, the false appearance of a poor civilization simply seeking help with no malign intentions, are all works of ETO; San Ti just went along with it, not necessarily understanding the point. Also in the book the avatar of Sophon never appeared, and San Ti never directly talked to anyone in the game; it was mostly just game AIs or ETO operators. What makes the conundrum interesting is that the aliens had thousands of other listening posts on their planet. All of them received the initial message from earth and were inevitably going to try to get the humans to respond. It just so happens, by sheer dumb luck, a pacifist was able to reply first. well the sophons are primarily tasked with stopping the advancement of science. And remember, Sophons can't read thoughts. Plus, the sophons had only been at earth for a few months. So, till this moment, the TriSolarans hadn't focused their Sophons to analyzing human behavior (which they might never have since they have no reason to suspect lying since they themselves don't understand lying as a concept). So it just so happens that Evans explains it to them accidentally and as a result has pretty much guaranteed his demise since now the Trisolarans don't want to protect him. Or to put it shortly, this scene is scary because Evans basically signs his own death warrant.
