Such a profound melancholy, and how tender, how passionate. Humanity. Pure Poetry. And a velvet orchestra and orchestra soloists.

Of course this is Pletnev. A pity this recording has the orchestra almost drowning out the pianist towards the end of the final movement. Still, what a pianist. Great.

I don't think it is Neuhaus! nor Kobrin,... my guess will be Pletnev ... but not 100% sure. Anyways. Thank you for sharing ADGO! We really appreciate your work. And these Pianist quizzes are fun ;)

In my opinion it should be a global law for politicians to knit and to listen to Rachmaninows 2nd pianoconcerto.

La orquesta ofrece una version meritoria, por la intensidad con que se aplica a verter el sentimentalismo de este gran cocierto. Pletnev podria tocarlo, si quisiera, de muchas maneras. Esta es solo una de ellas.

Wonderful! Can only be bettered by Rachmaninoff himself

I've never heard anyone treat the opening chords so matter-of-factly, so I knew right away I couldn't take even a guess at this. I think most pianists who have recorded this piece have recognized that this wonderful opening simply has to be inflected or dramatized to some extent to bring out the sense of mystery, or at least anticipation, that's in the music.

I find this opening incredibly subtle and full of anticipation. It's Mikhail Pletnev
@steveegallo3384
@steveegallo3384 6 лет назад
Perhaps too subtle....compared to the riveting Richter or (so unexpectedly but brilliantly) Yang-Yang! JOrge Prats, too. That said, Pletnev has my vote for Tschaik 2nd, Chopin Préludes and, especially, his own "Swan Lake" & "Sleeping Beauty"
@steveegallo3384

"Lang-Lang" sorry....the Halcion is kicking in. Still, a strangely low-keyed and restrained rendering here.....

I feel like I've been pumped full of alprazolam after listening to this. Was Pletnev recoiling from a loved one's death or something, I've never heard such a down, sluggish performance from him. On the upside 11:40 listen to that bassoon playing the C/B-natural/C. Never heard it emphasized that way. And again at 11:48 Nice touch.

Exactly, that was the year when he lost his mother....And playing your own drama you won't necessarily do it like one who's gonna get 1st prize at Tchaikowsky competition, but probably like smb. who's seeking for assumption and deliverance ( see 2nd movement )....

Le piano, important dès le début, ne vole surtout pas la place à l'orchestre, comme on fait souvent aujourd'hui dans les reprises. Le piano ne s'impose pas au commencement. On a bien l'impression qu'il attend l'orchestre qui va entrer en scène.
