In the early 1970's, the two future Cars lead singers, Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr, were members of a Boston folk trio called Milkwood. At that time, the two went by their real names, Richard Otcasek and Benjamin Orzechowski. Jas Goodkind rounded out the guitar-and-vocal trio, but future Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes also played on Milkwood's only album (his name was spelled "Hawks" in the credits), providing sax and horn arrangements. The 1973 album was called How's The Weather, although some mistakenly think it was self-titled. It predates the first Cars album by a good five years.

It's great to hear this side of these two talented musicians. It's so different than the music that made them famous...but REAL musicians have color and poetry in their souls that simply must be heard.

This is a beautiful and clever song - the chorus is great - and quite recognizable as the work of Ric Ocasek. Just in a softer style, less organized, but still has an aggressive edge. Yeah, it's the same guy who ended the Door To Door album (and The Cars's career, it seemed) with the sound of a harsh slamming car door. Long instrumental, though, damn! Greg's horns have an attitude, too. I really like this one.

He sounds so much like McCartney sometimes. No wonder The Cars are so amazing, they had been masters for a long time.

Ric and Ben were paying their dues in this Milkwood project. What influenced them to alter their style so drastically? Richard Hell, New York Dolls? Suicide?

Probably Bowie....maybe Roxy. Mid 70's were full of ch--changes.

@@hanumanvaya Good point about Bowie. I can totally see that.

Thanks for posting these Milkwood tracks! I had not heard them before. This song initially sounds a bit like Buffalo Springfield, then the bridge does a jarring Chicago-esq thing with the horns. The funky mix sounds very 60s-era, like a 4-track production where they bounced a bit too much and various parts are either jumping out or buried under. How cool to hear Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr working hard on their art five years before The Cars debut. What a transformation they went through in between the two albums. The first Cars album really crystalized a more unique and memorable sound, compared to this Milkwood album that sounds much more derivative. We'll miss you Rick and Ben!

Funny you should say that I said that about them in the 80's Crosby Still Nash & Young meets Chicago with Peter White on Jazz Guitar...lol

Did Benjamin play the bass on this album? I notice that it's a pretty good bass line with a *really* great sound, so I have to know if it's him. I also like the way the vocals come together and drift apart.

Ben played bass, I got the sound. Early in 1970 I had discovered that parallel compression sounded thicker with only a direct sound from bass (no amp)

OMG! This sounds so much like early Justin Hayward and the ('Core Seven') Moody Blues!!!!!
