Milsurp Munitions (Vetterli & 8x50R) SAFE TO SHOOT? Ammo Test 6.5 Vetterli-Carcano & M95 Mannlicher

The prospect of shooting my Vetterli 1870/87/15 had me sweating bullets. Milsurp Munitions sent me a sample of their new '6.5 Vetterli' and 8x50R Mannlicher ammunition for testing. This is the first time factory ammo has ever been loaded specifically for these Italian Vetterli rifles, and since most M95 Mannlicher rifles and carbines are 8x56R, options for 8x50R have been scarce. The Vetterli ammo, essentially 6.5x52mm Carcano with reduced pressures, is supposedly safe for these antique firearms. The 8x50 functioned just fine, but the poor condition of my Royal Tiger Imports rifles didn't do it any justice. RTI Steyr M95s are basically trash.

Awesome! I worked on the 6.5 Vetterli load development and testing with MM. It’s great to see people able to use their Vetterlis in 6.5 now!

@ReadinessReviews the thing is with the 8x50 is the bullet are somewhat incorrect, yes the original bullets were .323 however the had an expanding base which fit the bore which range from .329-.330. So from what I could tell is the bullet not catching the rifling. Im not dogging on Milsurp Munitions for making it the way they did I just want to clarify it could be improper bullet size

Yep you are correct.

That's interesting, they must have used a stupid soft and two part bullet combination to pull that off cause 6-7 thou base bullet expansion is insane. A thou too two thou would make more sense.

The Mannlicher clips for the 8x50R and 8x56R are completely interchangeable for all the rifles chambered for those cartridges. Older ones have solid sides, later ones have a “window” in the sides but they function the same. Only the clips for the 11mm m1885 aren’t interchangeable.

Awesome to see 100yrs old rifles firing again. I noticed that these rifle are very dry I would recommend some gun grease on the moving parts and in the guide channels of the bolt. That may help with cycling but will likely have no effect on accuracy unfortunately it is what it is. Great video

Keep in mind .264 is also undersized from a original carcano round. I haven't started loading for mine yet, but I believe the original diameter was .267

Don't put .268 bullets in a Vetterli. They can't handle the pressure.

Old Western Scrounger was always the go-to place for odd ball, milsurp ammo. Very limited quantities of essentially handloaded ammo. Huntington Die Specialties was the go-to place for rare components. There's not really a big market for odd ball ammo, and eventually they all go out of production.

I think this particular go at it is in direct response to the vast numbers of oddball rifles in oddball calibers that RTI is flooding the market with right now. That's a lot of demand that wasn't there before. I think milsurp munitions is sitting on a gold mine.

The Siamese Type 46 used the 8x50R cartridge , which I have one , the Type 46/66 used the up graded ammo of 8x52R . Do you have the original caliber rifle or the up graded caliber rifle

You really need a better M95 to see the accuracy of their ammo. I must have got lucky in that I got one with an ok bore(external is horrible). Also take apart and clean the bolts on your M95s, yikes there was so much rust and that is probably why you had to tap it in. Once you do that and oil them they are very smooth.(though that might vary based on your gun)

If MM could get better bullets maybe even similar or inhouse made copies to the OG military varients and make there casings in house then the opprotunity for a absolute cash flow just in reloading components would be off the charts. Stick to 264 bullets tho for that verterlli but increase the weight to 156 or 160 grains. Looks like they are using PPU 264" 139 grain bullets. So far with my experince with PPU .30 cal and .303 bullets they are a half to full thou over sized and usually 3 ish grains light from there ads but that means better bore riding for the 6.5 veterlli, carcano and arisaka type 38 rifles.

Please save your brass. Lots of companies who deal with once fired brass will buy all you have. Especially these oddball calibers.

I used to own a Vetterli in 6.5 Carcano. It seemed pretty unstable, with one “locking” lug and the soldered in bore sleeve , I wouldn’t feel comfortable shooting it, even with downloaded ammo.
@Franticalmond2
@Franticalmond2 2 месяца назад
The Vetterli has two symmetrical rear locking lugs, not one. The sleeve is not soldered in too. There’s nothing unsafe about the sleeving process.

Raised primers are also a product of low pressure loads also. Could be head space but low pressure loads don’t seal completely in the chamber.
