Mindfulness for Anxiety
Practicing mindfulness can help you shift your perspective on emotions, especially anxiety. It’ll help you get better at soothing anxiety, process sad feelings, and quiet negative self-talk. Mindfulness combined with CBT has been shown to work as well as medication at treating depression and anxiety, but without the side effects. And it’s more effective in the long term.
By the end of this video you’re going to know how to use mindfulness for anxiety in your life. You’re going to experience mindfulness with two quick activities, and you’re going to learn how mindfulness can help you calm anxiety in your body and mind.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

When you go to one therapist after another and leave thinking they weren't helpful, it's because you go in there already picturing in your mind that they will not help you. Instead, you need to convince yourself that each of them is going to make you a better person. The secret lies in writing down notes, that's how to be better, and then practice each step. Because if you leave without notes, you will not have learned anything. Our conscious mind refuses to change and will do whatever it takes to remain the same. You can create mindfulness to change by writing down notes and making a conscious effort to practice the new ways.

I'd have to say I'm mostly numb. On the positive side, it gets a little bit better sometimes. I'm learning how to laugh again. I'm not giving up, and encourage people not to give up either. We all have value. I'm going to apply the ideas in this video.
@buffplums
@buffplums 2 года назад
You are a special person, you have value and you are important. Learning and applying positivity is helping me tremendously and it’s really staved off my depressive episodes for months and months now since I started this. I’m 55 and only really started to do this and have suffered with depression for most of my life. I am far from there yet I guess it will take the rest of my life. But seek to learn what it means to love yourself and learn to seek to do good, forget grudges and i forgiveness, hatred and negativity. They will eat you alive and negativity which we seem to practice by default, keeps us locked into a negative cycle. Avoid saying things like, ‘I am useless at this or I am worthless’ change what you say and replace the negative phrases with realistic BUT kind phrases. You will find even when your negativity is screaming at you to dwell and go into say, self pity, the last thing you will want to do is say something positive. But give it a go, don’t think it’s all jumbo try with very small goals and audibly speak to yourself and tell yourself that you are going to do x, y, z and you want good to come out of it, for someone else, for yourself and just say it… do t analyse it don’t strive to make it come true, just say it the once and just give it over … remember, try to be kind to others, don’t feed your ego, keep your kind acts secret if you can and don’t do anything out of vanity…. JUST BE … BLESSINGS PEACE and HAPPINESS to you

You don't realise how big of a help you've been Emma. Everytime I get back to my bad patterns..I pop your channel up..maybe a bad coping mechanism but atleast at peace for few minutes.
@instanttherapy
@instanttherapy 2 года назад
The solution lies in finding the reasons why you go back to bad patterns and in writing down the opposite, like what you would do, think, feel or say differently before repeating bad decisions. Then practice, not all the time, just in one small situation at a time. Soon it'll become your constant reality and you won't have to "try."

Thank you so much for your efforts to bring out such a well thought-out and rigourous course on emotion processing that is still so easy to understand and relatable. I feel my life changing with every video and have already started checking myself when I catastrophize, stray away into worries about the future and forget to stay grounded in the present moment. The tapping skill has helped me a lot and it surprised me how easy it was. This is just a minute fragment of all that I have learnt from my course. I feel like I understand where my therapist is coming from now and it helps me absorb what he is saying so much better. Very much looking forward to more of your content!

These skills have helped me so much and I want to thank you! I had a huge downward spiral of mental health 5 months ago and it sent my body into a whole new level of physical discomfort and emotional numbness which targeted my passions and interests that I have learned to start feeling and working with. The progress has been slow and even now I’m still a little stuck on how to feel the sensations or emotions without letting them overcome me. Sometimes it seems like my mind thinks focusing on my breath or other things to relax is a way of me “denying” those sensations. But I am more than happy to see how much I’ve improved and even with my current struggles I know better how to feel these things with kindness and understanding. ❤️

My therapist has been working on mindfulness with me but I really struggle bc I overthink things. I felt crazy bc until I watched this…I couldn’t tell when I am mindful, overly focused on the present, not mindful enough, etc. This video is AMAZING!!!! I finally understand mindfulness. Best parts: 1) example of mindfulness experience at the beginning 2) creating joy in the present moment 3) “it’s just being aware” 4) acceptance- but actually a good definition 5) “the goal is not to make you feel better, it’s to get better at feeling….it’s not relaxation” WOW!!!!! 6) “the purpose of this activity is NOT to change your breathing” as a chronically ill person, i get distressed focusing on my body because I know I should be breathing differently and that keeps me from being present Caveat- ADHDers please don’t feel bad if you need some level of distraction. Try white noise.

Wow since I am not in the mood to write on my journal. Might as well just right here on my little tiny note pad aka the comment section. I had an experience where I noticed the tiny details about my surroundings. I went outside and I saw my cat under the table, on the ground beside the plants. I sat on the chair table and I noticed how the sun rays is so bright that it shines on my cat with the plants around him, it’s so aesthetically pleasing to see so I was smiling at how crisp it is. His with and orange fury with the green scenery, it’s something I could only saw on ghibli movies or in animated game I play before about cats. Then I raise my hand and see how the sun shines on it, everything so vibrant and crisp. I thank God for that day, and I feel blessed to be able to witness it

omfg for years ive been thinking mindfullness was about getting rid of feelings by feeling them. no one as ever explained it, they just say "be mindful" and i would think about my feelings and i would automatically quit because i was never taught that it was suppose to help you get use to the emotions. not get rid of them, thank you soooooo freaking much!!

Hi Thank you for this video and information - mindfulness is such an important practice to develop and practice daily. Mindful acceptance of emotions is very useful information for everyone - if only mindfulness practices were taught in all schools and ongoing.... Taking the pause and being present - it's so powerful! Thanks

Sending love from the Philippines! You're a great blessing to the world. We just moved to a new house and I could not sleep because my anxiety came back. I did not feel safe even though I know the house is very secure (locks and everything) . We also have a dog outside. I kept having thoughts about how someone could break in and I kept buying those thoughts. Yesterday, I searched youtube for "anxiety over safety" and that's how I found your videos. I watched them and did the mental exercises. Guess what, I had a good sleep last night!

A word that I think helps describe acceptance in mindfulness is equanimity. It has to do with calmness while under stress.

I'm so glad to be depression and prescription drug free, 20 years after I almost didn't make it past a severe depressive episode. At the time, about to complete school, I was horrified then relieved at my diagnosis. Dismayed because of stigma and fear, then glad. It finally explained the preceding ten years: which the psychiatrist quickly and accurately described: long-term, low-grade depression. After a few years of Prozac, to get out of the black hole, I rebounded and was delighted to discover CBT to help manage my emotions. "Boundaries" by McCloud and Townsend was eye-opening as well. Most recently I've added to my mental health toolbox with daily meditation with Headspace and learning about attachment styles with Thais Gibson and healing my insecure (dismissive avoidant) style in her school. The final key has been learning about and truly embracing my unique introverted personality style. The gift of faith undergirds it all, and I thank God for that, every day. Blessings to everyone on this channel and in this thread. 💕

Praise God that you're depression and drug free! How amazing that must be for you! I'm finally working my way out of a dark hole that came with depression, anger and isolation. God is graciously helping me get free of the pain and scares caused by my childhood trauma. I'm looking forward to being happy and whole again. This Channel and several others have been a huge blessing! I'm also going to check out Thais Gibson's website since my introverted personality could benefit from some embracing. :)

Hello Emma, your videos have been really useful. You cover a lot of things including catastrophizing thinking and such. I would like you to add a video for single people. I would like to hear you talk about the mindset that needs to be cultivated to find the right partner and how to process rejections. Processing rejections has been a hard thing for so many people. If you can talk about that in the context of dating and approaching woman, that will be great. Thank you

I was completely mindful when I was walking through lush green grass and plants. It felt magical

But isn't it interesting that when you are focusing on walking through plants, that you are not paying attention to where your hands are? Take right now for instance, without thinking about it, which foot is more forward than the other? We are only 2% Mindful and 98% floating around in our creative imagination. And this is good. It is that subconscious not-mindfulness that helps us to evolve and solve problems and to build better mousetraps and to sleep peacefully.

I remember a time when I got lost for 4 hours and was aware of my surroundings. I was present in the moment whilst also having these feelings of worry build up inside of me.

Hello everyone. I enjoy this channel and God bless this lady that puts all this good information up and out there for us. I want to suggest what helps me greatly whenever I get a negative thought. Whether it's just a negative thought or anxious thought this is what I do and it helps me greatly more than anything that I have tried. And here it is: Whenever I get a very negative thought or an anxious thought or a thought that is just not helpful to going forward- you know those thoughts, where you're always looking back on the negative things that have occurred- well here's what I started doing and it helps so much! I instantly think of something to PRAY to God for. Just one thing, pray to God for just one thing, or up to three things, EVERY TIME you get a negative thought. THIS HELPS SO MUCH! And while my mind is thinking of who or what to pray for I realize simultaneously, that I am doing more good by transforming the negative into an action of positive that will have a helpful and eternal effect on me and the things I'm praying for. While I think of what to pray my mind is alleviated completely of the negative thought and usually never comes back when I'm done with the prayer. You can do this silently while standing or sitting or laying in bed at night nobody knows you're doing it and it works! At least for me it has proven to be the most effectual help to completely alleviate the negativity and anxiety. I also feel that my inner spirit is lifted, (to love and be gracious toward others afterwards) AND I have a much * clearer, "more sound mind" to share that love. I hope this helps at least one other person as it has helped me. God bless you all.

I actually have an interesting dream to tell you about after watching your last video. I dreamed I was being attacked by a huge tiger, and, from watching your video (before bed) I learned the tiger's "sweet spots" and tamed it into petting it's face and it was happy. That was the overview of it anyways. Thank you for sharing this with us! 👍💯🙂
