dude love your videos and your aesthetic - ONE comment/request - spend some time at the end of your vids showing off the finished product. Maybe a little before/after - let us take in the beauty of the finished job. They end so abruptly I'm like damn I wanna see more. give the ppl what they came to see! but really awesome work - keep it up!

Love the look, but no self respecting carpenter or home owner should ever put MDF trim on a window. Too many potential issues. For a few extra bucks, go with real wood and avoid the potential moisture and other issues. Would expect this from a house flipper. Again it looks good, but has potential issues with MDF.
@bonduie4414

also use waterproof wood glue in that area - and UV protection Osmo for final oil layer

As a contractor, It's really scary to see what and how things are being installed into homes because of RU-vid amateurs. I foresee a huge uptick in home fires because of all these how to videos in electrical. At least MDF window trim shouldn't burn down a house. As a side note, it really shouldn't cost any extra to put in solid wood rather than the rubbish. A good quality white oak MDF panel should be about $200 that equates to $6.25 a board foot. I can get white oak lumber for $5 a board foot. of course prices vary by location, but in general lumber is almost always cheaper than an engineer panel, but lumber will have much more labor involved so from a contracting perspective the overall price is cheaper. For someone working on their own home who often doesn't properly calculate their time into a project than solid will almost always be cheaper if they are buying supplies at the appropriate business (not a big box store). There are times, however; when an engineered panel, and it's inherent stability, are preferred over solid wood.
@brianowoseni5079
@brianowoseni5079 5 месяцев назад
In his defense, there is a veneer on it, so it's not typical MDF. Or if you are going to use normal MDF, then just use oil-based primer to prevent water intrusion. There are ways to use MDF in those situations.
@brianowoseni5079
@brianowoseni5079 5 месяцев назад
@@timtimmons3115 Not sure why you raise fire concerns; any material can burn given the right circumstances. And since this is a window and not a fireplace or stove, that has no relevance to the video.

In the UK our windows are trimmed differently to you guys in the US. We tend to have a large window board at the base which as standard is supplied as primed MDF then the sides/head are generally plastered (mud to you guys) however if it is to be trimmed then these are also supplied as primed MDF. TBH in all the houses which i’ve owned and renovated (which I do for a living) there has never been any issues with using MDF regarding moisture as the MDF is fully painted and sealed to the windows therefore protected.

MDF core is actually more stable than real wood, real wood is nice but it's subject to the elements such as moisture and can expand and twist just by a moisture change.

Nice job, but that is a lot of work to fix the drywall. I'm yanking my trim as I work my way around the house, but went with simple picture frame trim replacement I custom milled myself (narrower than the original and no traditional stool & apron). My trick is to paint it same color as the wall so it blends in. Keeps your eyes from focusing on the windows.

You are a legend for this, there is nothing like this that I can find on the internet!! Just a question - do you have to have a slight gap between the drywall and the new frame to avoid cracking of the drywall or that's not an issue because of the drywall corner piece you installed?

Thanks I appreciate that. I did not use a gap that said it's not a bad idea to do so for expansion and movement as it can easily be filled with caulk and hidden during painting.

@timtimmons3115
@timtimmons3115 7 месяцев назад
@@Moaritsu This maybe true, but will you be at this house ready to buy a home when it goes to market? Flyingjoe is speaking of the typical buyer not outliers. Trim is a classic look that will never go out of style. Something like this will have a shelf life before taste almost always sways back to something more traditional. It's similar to modern architecture. It's only modern for a short time then it becomes dated. Classic looks are considered classic because they always outlive trends. A couple decades ago dark floors were all the rage. Pushed by designers that don't have to live with them. I told all my clients not to put in dark floors because there's a high probability that you will come to hate them with a white hot passion pretty quickly. Most of my customers trust my opinion and chose something else, but a few went with their interior designers, and ended up hating their dark floors with a white hot passion.
