Minn Kota Spot Lock Trolling Motor - Holding a 32 Foot Sea Vee in 25 MPH Nor'Easter

With a Nor'Easter battering Long Island the entire weekend of November 16, 2019, and with our Long Island Sound spots out of the question, Doc and I thought, let's take the Sea Vee out into Peconic Bay and see how the Minn Kota Terrova 87' Trolling Motor would hold up to the steady 20 to 25 mph winds (with gusts over 30).
The results were impressive. The fishing? Not so much, but the fact that the MInn Kota was able to hold a 32 Sea Vee that measures 32.5 feet long, is 9'4" wide and comes in at over 10,000 pounds speaks volumes to the power of this little trolling motor.

I have been using Minn Kota trolling motors for 20 years. Purchased a new 24' bay boat with hard T-top last year, I didn't launch it until I installed the new 36v 112 lb Minn Kota. A couple days ago I fished a jettie with strong incoming and outgoing current and 15+ mph winds. Minn Kota done perfect, when I would get on a trout hot spot, it would hold me until I was ready to move. I also do a lot of shark fishing around the reefs, previous boat with Minn Kota nor this boat has ever had the anchor used. I shark fish offshore for hours with the spot lock, the anchor is now emergency gear.

@@jiggingjerks - I really like it when throwing cast net, changing lures or de-hooking fish. I hit spot lock and don't have to worry about the current or wind pushing me into skinny water. I take boat to inland lake fresh water striper fishing in the Winter, fish most of the day with trolling motor pulling planer boards with live shad. Set tracks to follow a set distance off shorelines, when I am fighting a fish I don't have to worry as much about the boat and the other 9-11 trolling rods are still fishing. Plus slow trolling and controlling the boat from the stern is a plus.

Love the videos Capitan, I have a 22' Robalo CC and I never liked the look of a Troll Motor on deck of a nice sleek C.C. boat. Recently though I went fishing with a buddy on his new 22' cc he had dealer install Minnkota Terrova. When I experienced fishing, trolling, maneuverability, spot lock chillin/grillin on his boat, that TM started to look beautiful sitting on his bow. I hate anchoring, even considered a winch but this is like a winch with a motor on it. I guess this trend will grow among saltwater anglers. I ordered a 72" 36v Ulterra from West Marine, was surprised cause back ordered everywhere else, so believe when I get it. I got spooked after hearing Ulterra issues. I went with Ulterra for deploy feature and auto trim (raise lower shaft) from remote. The other factor was West Marine has a $240 xtended 2 yr supposed in home service warranty. Not big on xtended warranties but I heard of people spending $500 for one Ulterra repair, otherwise would have gone manual. Most commercial guides seem to prefer manual for reliability but I'm just pleasure. I'm not a "fat cat" but the weight of adding and driving 3 more batteries around forever (total of five) made me go lithium Ouch! Hope to update soon, thanks for all the info and insight
@jiggingjerks
@jiggingjerks 3 года назад
Best of luck! My boat needed a bigger shaft than the Ulterra offers and with no forward seating, it’s not that difficult to deploy and then pull back up. I hear you on the batteries. My boat has 6 Group 31 AGMs and my boat yard can’t store them anymore over the winter. Had to drag them home and store them in my garage (on trickle chargers) and all I can say is they are HEAAAAAAVYYYYYYYYY.

Does your prop come out of the water or to the very top of water column in choppy seas? I had a Motor Guide that would do that in rough seas. It was mounted on a smaller boat with smaller shaft length so probably slightly too short for that boat. Also, if you still have the trolling motor has your opinion changed of the Minn Kota Terrova on that boat? Thanks.

One more question John. What brand and type of batteries do you use for your trolling motor? I heard you say size 31. There are so many brands, types and specs (Amps, reserve capacity) that it can be overwhelming choosing one let alone the best one. I used an Interstate AGM 34 on my Motor Guide and it worked well but didn't last long.

I'm no engineer either, but in regard to the lack of swing as compared to traditional anchoring, here is my theory. The back and forth swing is similar to a pendulum. It creates a triangle footprint with the anchor point being the top point of the triangle. With over a 100ft. of anchor and rode deployed, the pendulum swing in wind and current is more than enough to keep you off the structure piece more than you are on it. With the Minn Kota Anchor Lock feature the greatest swing would be back at the twins only 32 ft. away. The left to right swing would exist, but be negligible. Moving to the bow the swing would eventually drop to Zero. Not sure that makes sense, but it's my theory and I'm sticking with it...lol.

@jiggingjerks
@jiggingjerks 4 года назад
Paul Hinkle so mine is networked to the Humminbird Solix but you can definitely do it without. You lose some cab abilities around plotting a drift line but will not affect the spot lock capabilities. Last boat wasn’t networked but we still loved not having to throw an anchor and we were still able to jog. The big difference is with the GPS integration you can set a course and drift it precisely as opposed to pointing the bow in a direction and setting course. Almost like driving a boat at 1 mph with your autopilot set on a very specific track. Hopefully this makes sense :)

Impressive video!! I do have two questions. First, Is that a permanent mount or can you remove it easily when not planning to use and secondly, on your sea vee, fully deployed down, how deep is the motor? Where i am at, we are more exposed and will be in big waves.
@jiggingjerks
@jiggingjerks 4 года назад
The unit can be removed fairly easily. The mount is bolted in. I can tell you it does not get in way for me but I mostly drift fish and can position boat so anglers fish off port side (TM is on starboard side). The Minn Kota sits 39 inches above water (my Sea Vee does not have a “deep” bow) so at 87 inches, it can sit very deep in water column. You’d need to measure on your boat to see if it would work.

Thanks for sharing...enjoy your videos. I bought a 24 ft. center console this summer and really want this trolling motor. I even called your installer. I'm torn between the manual vs.automatic deploying and, while I have no doubt this will hold my boat, it seems like such a monstrosity on the bow...sticking out over the front and pretty much an obstacle for guests/cruising/tubing. I know there's a quick release plate. Is the support bracket custom? The shorter versions I've seen on other videos don't have that and, I would imagine, would have the rig banging about going out front in even mildly rough waters. Thanks again for sharing your experiences/knowledge!
@jiggingjerks
@jiggingjerks 4 года назад
ITUMBLE4U for a CC manual all the way (in my opinion). Too many things to break with the auto deploy. You sound like Doc lol. He is big on aesthetics. Me, I prefer capabilities over looks. That’s obviously very subjective and it’s up to each boat owner to decide whether the uglier look is worth it to them. The unit incidentally is locked in super tight and does not budge. Look at the beginning of the vid - we are running 35 through some nasty seas and it don’t move. Jack the installer has advised me it’s 5 minutes to remove the unit at the end of season. The plate though is bolted in and not going anywhere

@jiggingjerks
@jiggingjerks 4 года назад
The only thing I can think of is is anything obstructing your GPS receiver? When I first got mine, I was foolishly putting my camera bag right on top of the puck receiver and it would lose signal. Hasn’t happened once I realized what I was doing. If you’re not doing that, given the intermittent working and not working, my guess would be a bad wire somewhere. Sucks it’s happening - if you work it out, let me know here just in case someone else ever has the same issue. For what it’s worth, I had a Rhodan before this and the ECU fried up on us one day. When that happened, the spot lock went nuts and kept spinning us in a circle. I think the fact that you’re just getting “disconnected,” means a less serious issue.....

MarlonM I’d go with the Minn Kota 36 Volt, 72 inch Terrova. My very good friend just added this to his 21 foot Pair Custom (the old Sea Ox brand). It is a perfect match. Do you have space though for three group 31 batteries? A lot of folks are adding one of those new single 36 V lithium batteries. Yesterday, I didn’t secure the Minn Kota and it deployed while I was running in heavy seas at 30 miles an hour. They are shipping me a new prop no questions asked to replace the one that I broke when it’s self deployed. I have had zero issues with the Minn Kota other than what I just described (my own fault). Rhodan CS was great too - I fried an ECU the first year I owned the Rhodan and they shipped a new one out the same day we called them. I have a hummingbird screen and I really like the way I can set the cruise control and the auto pilot on the Minn Kota. If I were doing it all over again, I would go Minn Kota. Dan, longer is always better but it’s rare that I cavitate. I can think of one time this year at Block Island when I was using the trolling motor to help us with our drift speed and we were in three footers that there were occasional cavitations. My bow measures 39 inches to the waterline so for me 87 is more than enough. I previously owned a Rhodan for one season and had an ECU fry on me. I’ve had tremendously better luck with the Minn Kota and they have been great to me in general. I had one issue this year where I didn’t secure the trolling motor and it’s self deployed in the ocean at the 30+ miles an hour breaking the prop and Minn Kota shipped me a new one no questions asked. I don’t remember but I doubt it. We fished one day this year in a heavy wind and current (no crazy current here in this vid) and it was at 8 to 9 most of trip. Expended 50% of its battery in about 8 hours

John hope all is well. Let’s say your in the ocean and it’s blowing pretty good. You’ve got some decent wave activity. Do you see this still being able to work if the bow is coming in and out of the water based on the wave activity? Thanks
@jiggingjerks

The shaft is 87 inches long and the length from gunnel to waterline is about 39 inches so I still have two feet plus. Having said that, if it’s blowing that hard, I probably stay in the Bay/Sound and don’t venture into the ocean :)

I’m guessing 10 to 11k as rigged and loaded.

did that killer metal shark your buddy has get one yet?? Thats my kinda boat. carrying more batteries for me is my concern. I use a 26 alloy plate and love the ability to fish 2 feet! So much more weight. Like 2 more small people! and my luck with electronic gadgets is never good. I know a guy...(doesn't everybody) spent 8k on motor, lithium batteries, charger and of course he was lazy, the install on a contender 23. Wow, 8K!

Hi John, Happy New Year (2024), I’ve been searching RU-vid for a video of this motor ( only 72”) for my 180 Grady White, and can’t find anything. I should have known I would find something on your channel. Before I buy one, I have some major concerns, maybe you or a viewer can help me. Doing the installation is not a problem for me, I’m a retired electrician mechanic, it’s the cleats, navigation lights, anchor locker and fabricating a mounting bracket that are. I really need to see my boat with one installed ? Any suggestions from anyone would be a big help. Thanks very much, another great video, see you in 24.

@@jiggingjerks Haha, they looked familiar. Also when you slide the shaft lock down for travel as safety, you do not need rotate it to align the notch so it fits correctly. You can leave it where it's easiest to tighten the knob.

anthony alessi I just checked with him and because there’s so much custom work involved including building a template for the bracket, the boat really needs to come to him in eastern Long Island.

Pretty ugly up there on the bow, however very impressed with the performance. Until there is better designed mounting, ill stick with my anchor and anchor ball. But keep up the good videos.

Peter Thibault yup - the lines are definitely not as clean and I get why people wouldn’t want them up there. As for me, at almost 50, I’ll take the ease of operation over the looks (but again, I do understand why others won’t).
