I used to be a towboater on the lower Mississippi and back in 2006 it got so low that we hit an old sunken barge, which sunk the barge at the head of our tow, and they ended up having to shut down that entire section of the river. TL:DR, sometimes rivers get low.The Mississippi is huge though, and it would take a lot to get it to the point the media likes to portray it's at. Also, we always stay in the channel. WHen you get to a sharp bend you have to do something called flanking, which is just you kind of Austin Powers it and go back and forth until you can finally make the bend.

I've been to the head water's of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca in Minnesota. Amazing how such a small amount of water morphs into such a massive flowing body of water all the way to the Gulf of Mexico!
@BurtSampson
@BurtSampson Год назад
@@americanpatriot2.06 I've heard about the headwaters. Somebody told me one time that they start so small you can jump over them. I have no clue if that's true, but it's one of the things that gets talked about on the river sometimes. It's such a crazy huge river. And not just width wise. I think the channel gets up to like maybe ~120' down around Baton Rouge. That's why you get those huge ass ships all the way from the Gulf up there. You can have a massive draught and it's no problem.

I crossed the Mississippi right where you are in mid October. Ive been crossing the river usually in October, for 40 years and I never saw the river as low as it was this year, sand bars everywhere! I have been watching you guys since the summer I immediately thought of you guys and just how bad this may get across the country. I went to a lecture about water in the 80s, something has stuck with me from that lecture to this day, "you've never seen a war until you see one over water"
@jonking7345
@jonking7345 Год назад
There's not going to be any war over water in the United States, quit following the hype on that BS. It's been 40 years since they were hyping a drought war to you. Since then, there have been similar droughts over that time, and insane floods too. It's a giant river fed by half the country, OF COURSE it's going to fluctuate
@dabird8808
@dabird8808 Год назад
@@jonking7345 sounds like your touchy about this. Sorry I was just repeating what I heard 30 years ago and what I saw with my own eyes in early October, and thought the hosts may find interesting. I hate to break it to you but water rights are being contested now and always have been in this country. Please dont assume Im a tree hugger just because I saw what I saw and heard what I heard. Have a good one!
@jonking7345
@jonking7345 Год назад
@@dabird8808I'm at work, so I'm trying to spit this out quickly, apologies if it isn't totally coherent. I didn't mean to assume that you're a tree hugger. I don't mean to attack you personally. Only the hyped message that you are (I think) unintentionally perpetuating. They were pushing water war 40 yrs ago, and since then, this river has fluctuated wildly in it's depth. Contesting, and fighting wars, are 2 very different things. I am only touchy in that people are buying into the hype from the "story at any cost" media. Hype can produce panic, and panic can lead to violence. There has been a LOT of hyping going on in the media. Like the imaginary "turkey shortage" at Thanksgiving. There are plenty of other "sky is falling" messages that the media hypes. I wish you well

I'm not saying we are going to war over it anytime soon but we have wars over oil and plenty of other natural resources imagine if water became limited something we need everyday to survive and grow food with there would be massive wars over water that is a pretty well known fact.

You should have come up North where the Mississippi doesn't drain half the country. It was much lower here for a longer time because the drainage in the midsection kept the drought actually minimal in the southern section. Memphis is too far south for the lows to last very long each year because by then, the Mississippi has collected all the rain from 800-millions of acres of land. I crossed the Mississippi several times this year in Little Falls, MN and I have never seen it so low for so long a period of time. The first time we went over it, we saw mostly mudflats with a few streams of water braiding through it instead of one large channel.

I actually live near the Mississippi River and after the hurricane in Florida, it dropped to the lowest level that I’ve ever seen. The hurricane literally sucked the water out and the water didn’t come back. Most of the River’s edge near Tennessee/ Arkansas looked like a beach. It wasn’t caused by a drought, it was a hurricane. The river fluctuates yearly, but when it’s up, it’s really up! Had these guys visited about two months ago, they would’ve seen all of massive sand bars.

I actually thought it had heard that they lowered the Mississippi River to actually clean the mud out of the bottom of it and widen it a little bit make a difference spots for the silted built up and widen it in spots where I got an arrow for the barges to go through That’s what I understood but of course the news has to make it out to be a climate change to hold up the narrative that we have to go electric cars and all this other garbage. But I never thought the hurricane sucked or could suck water out of the river like that, but I guess that’s possible when you have that much velocity from hurricane pulling on something else to see that’s a lot of energy in a storm pulling on the body of water pulling it out. But it’s possible combination of both shutting the river down to dredge it and clean it up in the storm pulled the water out made it even worse. I’ll leave it at that.

Here in Arkansas it’s been raining a lot lately so our river including the big Arkansas River has been feeding the Mississippi a lot. It should be back into normal levels sometime next year when El Nino kicks back up. These droughts happen from time to time the last noticeable one was 10 years ago in 2012. From what I’ve known as well as older generations the river goes low sometimes and then goes back up to flooding levels I guess that’s just how the climate and weather patterns goes. As far as the Colorado I believe it’ll take longer to refill it back due to the West’s climate and the west are prone to long term droughts.

I am about 20 minutes away from the Mississippi here in Southeast Missouri and I catfish on it a lot. I can tell you the last 10-15 years that we have had more flooded areas to deal with than low areas. I wish you guys could have come up to see Tower Rock. If you haven't heard of it, look it up because it was on the news because people were able to walk out to it due to the low water. I caught a 78 pound blue cat just a little to the south of it a few years ago and the river was up 15 feet over flood stage at the time. I love your content, keep up the great investigative reporting lol.

I loved this! At 18:10 when Jr. had his squirrel encounter and was shocked by the moisture everywhere. Then, "everything is green, You cant see very far, there's trees everywhere." As an Iowan, I went to Bend,Oregon for a wedding and felt the same way. I said, "who are the settlers walked past the fertile Midwest and came to this desert to claim a homestead?" Incoming Dad joke...Like a classic fish(erman) out of water story. You guys are the best! Keep up the great work! Home is where is where the heart is.

I lived in Lake Havasu City years ago. I moved to the Gulf Coast of Alabama for 5 years and I liked it, loved the fishing, made some great friends. Having said that, last week I bought a house in Lake Havasu City and will in all likelihood, finish out my final days here. Love following these guys! They seem like really nice people.

There's places you can do that in East Texas, SE OK, SW AR and West Louisiana where there's actually something worth seeing. You also have free passage to travel on bodies of water such as creeks, rivers and lakes. Those meander thru uninhabited wild areas that you can explore.

Missouri had a drought last summer. Cape Girardeau river access was dry enough to walk around and barges were stalled. And we like private property. Less government us a win in the end.

really cool you guys made it to memphis, the lowest seemed to be in october, right before it started getting cold cold. me and my daughter got to walk out damn near halfway across what would usually be a full river. was amazing to see all the sand and weird artifacts dried up. This was at a boat ramp north of memphis next to a park. I think the river is coming back a bit by now, i need to drive downtown and take a look myself.

During the 1960's our Chicagoland Boy Scout Troop would go on 'Live off the land" campouts in wooded regions of Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. One actually can survive like a primitive hunter-gatherer in those. Four years later some of us tried hitch hiking to the Grand Canyon during the Summer and were dismayed at the absence of flora, fauna and water in the arid Western lands. We figured people had to crazy to move out there and those with a lick of sense moved away to wetter regions ASAP. It was a pretty scenery that quickly became rocks, rocks and more rocks once we saw there wasn't any water or edible vegetation to be found in case we stuck somewhere on the side of the highway.
