Personally, I love the edp cause it's stronger and it's not difficult as a man (you wouldn't expect this i'm a brut, old spice and Aramis kind of man) to pull off if you know how much to use and I love this particular review so relaxing to watch. Your review even got me so far to watch the movie which i love especially the last scene where everyone is in one room. Most funny thing is i'm just 17 and I think i'm born in the totally wrong era, I love wet shaving, wear a pencil moustache (just like Flynn) and do everything that's vintage and old fashioned just can't live without Sinatra, Why i'm I saying this all cause this all is Mitsouko to me a kind of a macho dandy who does what he loves without a care in the world. Cheers!!
Karan I love your comment. You give me hope that style, charm and classics be they perfume, films or fashion will survive. Thank you so much for posting. You made my day! Cheers. PS .... And you know who Errol Flynn is!
Its just such a pure delight, to watch Your Scent videos - THANK YOU, so much!!!! I am listening, whilst I am putting canvas on my painting, what a lovely start to a day :)!
Gorgeous review of a gorgeous fragrance. My favorite chypre! My scent memory of Mitsouko brings me back to my great-aunt’s wardrobe…she allowed me to dress-up in her designer gowns and accessories from her days as a fashion model/flapper (1920s). She was the most alluring, exotic, and uniquely stylish woman I’ve ever known. I adored her. Of course, her signature scent was Mitsouko. It is mine, too. She was 74 when I was born and I just turned 74. Mitsouko transcends time…just like The Maltese Falcon…
Love to hear you expand on your interest in old movies. Your commentary of these movies is sparking an interest for me in starting to explore the golden age of movies.
There is a whole wonderful world of films pre 1970 just waiting for you. I hope you do go on that celluloid journey. It is worth the ticket price a thousand times over...and there you will find more stars than there are in the heavens.
Lance, I can always count on your perfume reviews to be beautifully elegant and entertaining. Never change. I will order a bottle of Guerlain Miss Mitsouko today. Have a wonderful week x
Fantastic storytelling and depth to your reviews. Mitsouko is my daughter's favorite perfumes (she's 24). I have to say it suits her perfectly - it smells divine on her skin and lasts forever. Her friends have tried it but it doesn't smell the same on them and wow, she gets complimented all the time when she wears it. I love how you drew together the mystery of the Maltese Falcon with the characters and the fragrance.
Cheers to you Lanier! Love you tying together a classic movie and a classic fragrance while enjoying a classic cocktail. Well done. You are a credit to all three!
Oh Lanier BRAAAAVOOO! 8 minutes 49 seconds of pure gold :) I was so exited to see this because I am really curious about this one. Can't wait to explore it. Your videos are just.... an experience. x
Very nice video; I like the way you put it together. I'm in my early 40's, and am looking for a new signature scent....I've practically had the same fragrance wardrobe since my 20's, and am ready for something new, and different. I've discovered that I like chypre frags quite recently, and have decided to go with the best.
Thank you for this beautiful and wonderful video. I love wearing mitsouko. Sometimes it's melancholy, other times dark and sensual. Anais nin apparently enjoyed the perfume too. :)
Lanier, your videos never fail to impress. How timely this video arrives...I want to buy my wife one last cold weather fragrance before the spring scents step to the front and I'm thinking why not purchase her a classic! Wonderful production my friend. Keep up the amazing work. Best, Carson
Man, I love your channel! Always something interesting to watch. I'm only just beginning to explore Mitsouko, will have to get to know it better in the future.
Hello lovely man, just wanted to pop by and say how much I adore your videos - I've been watching them by the handful every night for the last week, sans cocktail sadly ;) Hope your move is going smoothly x
you got me watching all these bogart movies now this weekend ,The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca,The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Key Largo, The African Queen :)
Awesome, Lanier, I just love how artistic this video is. And cool artifacts from your grandpa! Mitsuko is such a classic beauty, for me peach notes are sexy, there's something fleshy about the way they smell and I am drawn to the smell of them. HUGS
Thank you Cleo. On me I don't get very much peach. I get a spice market the size of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Isn't that funny how different fragrances work on differing skins?
This is one that really caught me by surprise. It's very very masculine IMO. On my skin it's all about the Oakmoss (I have the EDP)... everything else is in the backroll!!! Great review as always!
Great video , you are so passionate about perfumes , and that what's make your work looks so vintage , the amount of mysterious in this vedio is unbelievable , made me die to try all the gurelain I already ordered my EDP Mitsouko and EDP Shalimar , I can't wait to try them on 👍
Ordered Mitzy today--blind-- after reading Zealot Crusader's review on BaseNotes. Thank you for sealing the post sale for me. Can't wait to smell this classic.
Hi Lanier, I just love your reviews. Your such a gentleman, and your productions are so fact-full, classy and fun! I love history...your choice of film :-) I believe the magic of any Chypre has to do with the Bergamot/Oakmoss dynamic. And between the Oakmoss and Bergamot you have these florals and spices suspended. Ask an amateur perfumer, please let me give you a simple, sketch formula of Mitsouko. Kid`s at home, please enjoy! Top Notes: Peach 1 Bergamot 7 Flowers, middle accord: Ylang , Rose 1,Jasmine 1, Cloves/uegenol 1 Amber Sweet Base Accord: Oakmoss 2 , Labdanum 1, Civet tincture 1, Vetiver 1Alpha ionone 1
I cannot believe that the fragrance is that old. The lady sitting next to me said awww when you mentioned your grandfather's items. Nice review as always.
There are lots of fragrances still around from the old days. This is one of the best. Thanks Chad for telling me about the lady next to you. Give her my best regards.
Hello Mr Lanier! How are you? Well, just one week I follow your channel...I enjoy so much because It link to the glamour age to the fragrance's identity...I mean, just like that... thank you...I never heard Guerlian before this time...but I have learned much about this week.
Thanks John t. I eat there almost every time I go downtown! Love the Vesper Martinis they make. And the food is GREAT. And to top it off, on the second floor they have, in a glass case...the Maltese Falcon !! (and great Jazz nightly)
Great to find out more about this perfume i was wondering about it :) , i'll have to watch that movie now looks really good , i've seen alot of old movies , havent gotten around to that one yet , i love the clues they give you in the movie to the charter . the betty davis one sounds interesting also ,i love her , really nice vintage watch you have also :)
yes i found it , going to watch it today :) my dad is a big Humphrey Bogart fan , I always like Casablanca, and now i just realized from that scene Peter Lorre is in that one also :)
Great detective work Lanier! I have a vintage tiny bottle of the perfume and I love it, I wonder how does it compare to the new EDT that you show in your video...
I just love your videos; they are so interesting, fact-filled, and you're able to paint images of a bygone era in the hearts and minds of your viewers. Well-done! Hey, I just noticed your dirty little secret...the stronger the drink, the better the review.(Lol)
Thanks Jim! Hey barkeep a Rob Roy for my buddy here and two cherries bub! Jim you should see my frist take on the opening when I took that first sip. Zowwie! Maybe I will put it in a bloopers reel.
I just subscribed to your page. Love your reviews.I commented on your Chanel Misia review. Not to be creepy but i recognize the neighborhood in your introduction, I happen to live in that neighborhood too. Remember Mad Magda's? :)
I’m a Guerlain-o-phile, especially the Jacques greats. I find Mitsouko the absolute most-complex, most-gorgeous, most-sexy, and mysterious parfum ever. My life would lack facets of colour had I not Mitsouko by my side. No matter what else I wear and love, I always end up back with this masterpiece of parfum history. The newest reformulation is said to be quite accurate to how the vintage smelled when it was new. I seldom prefer reforms to vintage, but Mitsouko may be different. What do you think of the newest? I can see the face of the new nose, but his name escapes me. You’ll know, I’m sure. I’m new to your channel, and I love your reviews. #MitsoukoLove.
The intro to this video is so classic! Just amazing (no I am not kissing bum, lol it is amazing) Thank you for this great video and review. The fragrance bottle is beautiful. Love the gifts from your grandfather (I won't say what they are ~ they have to watch the video :) )
Have you tried the extrait of this beauty. It’s on another level. Breathtakingly beautiful. If the edp is a masterpiece the Extrait is beyond masterpiece status. Cheers
Hi Lanier. I must have missed something.. When Sam Spade smells the card, he says "Gardenia". I always thought he refers to Gardenia by Chanel, made in 1925..?
I want a Rob Roy right now. A woman at church used to call me that when I was a little boy. I don't know why. I finally got my hands on a sample of vintage Mitsouko. Your film sleuthing was amazing here. I find this an incredibly beautiful unisex scent. That base! It's so masculine. I love combining it with Habit Rouge to give it just a touch more masculine richness. My husband turns into a doe-eyed puppy lol.
Lanier, how are you? Your reviews are fantastic - the overall style, your humor, the stories you tell and the manner in which you speak. I've been getting into Guerlain lately and own Vetiver and L'Instant de Guerlain pour homme. I plan on trying Mitsouko, Eau de Guerlain, L'Heure Bleue and Mouchoir de Monsieur. Which Guerlains from your collection are the most wearable/people pleasing? Hope you're well
Sean Mc thank you very much for that great complement. Guerlain is a great house that I love. I would say that L'instant and Vetiver the the people pleasers in my experience. But I do love me some Habit Rouge and Shalimar. Oh yes...Shalimar gets loads of complements. Cheers Sean.
Bought Mitsouko this week after reading about Charlie Chaplin and watching your video and I must say I LOVE IT ! this will be my signature scent i'll always think of your video when spraying it it really smells like a film noir . THANKS AGAIN P.s. what are you reviewing in the video ? the edt or edp?
Lanier Smith please do. Another absolute timeless classic. The parfum in my opinion is the greatest most emotional fragrance ever. It’s an incredible journey and to me, along with mitsouko parfum the definition of a masterpiece. I’ve never had a fragrance bring me to tears as if it were a romantic novel or film. Melancholy and bliss all at once in a bottle. It really does tell a story and you can visualize a blue shade over the romantic streets of Paris.
great video as always loved the historical aspect you brought to it too. I am always inquisitive so I have to ask... In the movie when he sniffed the card the secretary said it was gardenia. and when you gave the note breakdown there was no mention of gardenia. I have several theories but I will make this comment short and ask you if there is anything I'm missing?
Thanks Kevin! You are not missing a thing. In the book the perfume is not mentioned by Effie but refereed to as a chypre in the description of Joel Cairo. I deduced it to most probably to be Mitsouko through my research. In the film as you mentioned and I point out in my review Effie says "Gardenia" when Sam Spade smells the business card. This was a device created by John Houston, the screenwriter and director of the film to let the audience know at once that Cairo is Gay. Gardenia being considered by most at the time as strictly for women.
Lanier Smith thanks for taking the time to explain. thats what I figured was going on the real description was in the book. I will have to try and get my hands on a sample. we had a lilac bush outside of my house growing up have yet to smell it as a note in a fragrance.
I love Mitsouko and I have it in all its forms. It has been reformulated but ... honestly , its not a bad reformulation . The Parfum these days is not as strong (no more real oakmoss sadly ) as it should be but I now buy it in the EDP form which is fine. When I wear it I feel "luxe" , if you know what I mean. Lots of men wear this too .
as a movie buff, I appreciated your opening, Good stuff! Now, about the frag. Im gonna take a chance on this as a blind buy. Don't generally do that, but what the hell! When to wear? Longevity, silage?
Hey Jim thank you so much, happy you liked my opening. So when to wear? Whenever you want to add an air of mystery and sophistication to your look or mood. Longevity and silage are great. Enjoy!
Both!! I really feel that Mitsouko is a rich full and beautiful unisex. But that is must me, your nose knows best what you feel is masculine or feminine in fragrance. Get a sample if you can. Try Surrender To Chance website for samples. Cheers.
I couldn't say as they both are spectacular and unique unto themselves. What sold me on the EDT was the reasonable price. The perfume is quite expensive and comes in a tiny bottle. Now if I could only get my hands on that black bird and sell it to Joel Cairo for $5000 "no questions asked" then I could get that EDP and many more that I want.
yes i was looking the EDT is a great price right now on fragrancenet , if they are both spectacular then cool i'll go for the EDT , hehe yeah 5,000 dollars would be great :)
omg never really paid enough attention to this detail! I took a film theory class about film noir last year and I wrote about the Maltese Falcon for one of my term papers!!.. and Mitsuoko is one of my favorite perfumes... I would have enjoyed the paper so much more if I realized this tiny detail!!
+Jackie Fei (Yongqing) I am so thrilled that this review was special for you. There is so much to say about the perfume and the film. Both are complex, mysterious and wonderful. Thank you so very much Jackie for your lovely comments.
+Lanier Smith merci beaucoup! I am so glad I found your channel on youtube tonight while procrastinating on another art history paper haha! A friend of mine is doing a research about how people associate scents with gender(floral is considered feminine while woody is rather neutral...). I just shared your channel link with her and I'm sure she'll love it too!
whoa!! *shake hands* I'm actually studying abroad in Paris right now :p. I'm going to school soon so I will talk to you another time :))) omg art historians have good taste, now I trust your perfume recommendations even more. You live in SF? Have a wonderful day/night! I miss the bay. Again, thank you for investing time and energy making these lovely videos
Thank you dear. Stay safe in Paris (I just did a video tonight on Paris) Keep in touch and a here is a big San Francisco Hug filled with fog and the smell of sour dough and the cozy warmth of an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista Cafe. xo
