In this episode we look at one of our Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump installations in Kent with George Clark. The homeowner Simon previously had an LPG boiler and thought it was a time for change and greener alternatives.
George discusses the experiences Simon has faced and speaks to ourselves to understand the processes we have to take in order to calculate the heat demand of the property as well as the importance of acquiring an MCS accredited business to install this technology and why the Mitsubishi Ecodan is often our choice of heat pump.

We moved in to our converted barn 9 years ago (bought from a previous owner who didn't really live in it). It has an ECODAN ASHP for underfloor heating and hot water. It is expensive to run and gives nothing back. I have turned off the heating and replaced it with 3 Everett stoves, which are really good. Although the hot water is set to 24hrs it is always cold, so we have to repeatedly use the boost button (up to 3 times) to heat water for washing up etc. I have really struggled to find anyone to offer a service, the original installers have gone. I have recently contacted a company I saw on a recommendation of our local face book page who wants £400 plus vat and extra if the glycol needs topping up. Luckily I have a gas Aga (aims programmable) which help to heat the property; gas central heating would be preferable but with the cost to convert and net zero agenda this is not a possibility. I am so frustrated!!

We live in a 3 bed timber-framed new build semi and have a Daikin Altherma ASHP. From my 3 month of experience of using it over winter, I would put it in a skip and have a Viessmann gas boiler fitted in its place - if we were on mains gas.

Damn, this is not great... so should I be looking at throwing my money down the drain?

There are lots of resources on RU-vid for free to improve the efficiency. I would recommend checking channels like heat geeks and urban plumber to name 2. Often ASHPs are not set up properly with to high flow temperatures or bad weather compensation curves, constant cycling etc. Upside down Fork is another good channel. You should check them out to see if you can improve your COP. Every house is different. It isn't the heat pumps fault it is a bad installer or not set up properly or both. Hopefully yours is installed properly but not set up properly so it can be fixed for little to no cost. Good luck!

I have a 2 bed property with an r32 exodan, and my home is so cold it's intrue, this was swapped for an s and y plan as that wasn't working at all, my bills were 1,600 a quater, and this new one is still not heating my home, and I had a bill for 1,300. My radiators are not working properly and are warm at the top and cold at the bottom, we are so cold but I'm still getting high bills

What kW is the heat pump? Surely this has been badly designed and installed?

I don't heat my house June thru' Sept so SCOPs are misleading IMHO. What are the COPs for Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb when the temps sometimes get down to -3C? Close to 2 I'd have thought, but I'm happy to be corrected..

Hi David, the COP will differ dependant on the application and It would really depend on things such as; the age of the property, size of the property, heat loss calculations, the ambient temperature target internally, heating emitters/sizes etc. COPs can certainly reach 3 or more in those winter months.

@@dorewoodman Thanks that's reassuring.

Hi, I have a 1984 built house up North, over a total of two years my SCOP for both hot water and heating has been 3.75. Approx 4.0 for heating, and 2.25 for hot water. The lowest I've seen the COP is just above 3, but it was -5ºC on average for a week. I'm not lucky enough to live in a lovely converted 16th Century Barn with underfloor heating, it's a standard red brick house on an estate in Yorkshire. These heat pumps work in the more realistic world that some of us live in too.

@@Muppetkeeper Same here with house style MK. Very reassuring your COP was above 3 @ -5C. What was your flow temperature from the ASHP @ -5C?

@@Muppetkeeper hi, id also be interested to know this, and if possible your total heat loss and design flow temperature.
