MLB stopped allowing players to see the strike zone box on their dugout tablets in order to protect umps from heated ball-strike arguments during games, according to a report by The Athletic's Evan Drellich.
Scott Braun breaks down the story, while Todd Frazier and Erik Kratz point out why this is an issue - and a shady move by the league.

So great to hear these umpires and the league getting called out, thanks for continuing to call it like you see it at Foul Territory.

That box is not an accurate strike zone. It shouldnt be on television broadcasts either. Get rid of it.

I don't really understand Tod's point here. Even if the box isn't on your screen, you can still see which pitches are called balls or strikes, and where they are in relation to your body and the plate. The box was never the official strike zone. If the ump can't see the box when they're making the calls, and you can't see the box when you're standing at the plate, why is the box important to the player? I get the irritation about not being informed about the decision and having no say it it. But the argument that you need the box to improve your batting doesn't make much sense. In fact, if you're forced to eyeball where the ball is in relation to your body and the plate, rather than relying on an unofficial outline, it might actually be more productive from an eye-training perspective.

The box matters, it’s the zone that everyone involved with the game bases their decisions off. And if it wasn’t, why would MLB ever have agreed to put it on any of our screens. Now, you are correct in saying that the ump can’t see this zone. Umpires are human, and missing a strike that paints the corner or missing it the other way 4-6 inches outside is going to happen. But I suppose it’s nice to know when an umpire that day is off the plate consistently or not giving the letters, etc. Becomes even more informative when you have an umpire as egregious as Hernandez.

I find it funny everyone thinks the umpires should be perfect missing calls by inches or less but not complaining about the players hitting .237 batting average. That's 23% of the pitches they face lol
@popgunandy

I also find it amusing that when a pitch fools the batter, catcher, bench, fans, and broadcasters, it's completely unacceptable it occasionally fools umpires, the one group consistently checked and found to be (while not perfect) better at it than all the others.

@@popgunandy right! Players will swing at pitches 4 feet off the plate but it's the umpire's fault. What is the MLB ump accuracy like 98%?

I'm telling you MLB made the letters for the names of the players which are on the back of the jerseys intentionally smaller.

This is why the umps need to be demoted to AAA and AA or cut for poor performances. If the mlb players can be cut or demoted so should the umps. Problem solved.

An effort by MLB to cover for the poor calls of their umpires this year.A terrible look by the league in which there was always a distrust between the league and players.Shame on them.

I said it a long time ago. Manfred needs to go. He is the worst commissioner ever. He is single handedly ruining baseball. Look at all the injuries. The pitch clock is insanely ridiculous and has caused nothing but chaos and the stats showed that it was causing injuries when it was being tested in the minor leagues. The data is still obviously showing pitching injuries are up in the majors. Yet Manfred still sits there lying about it. He cares about the $$$ he doesn't care if he cuts a hall of fame caliber pitchers career short or altering their career to make that $$$. Baseball is just terrible now. They made the buster Posey rule so they cut out the action at the plate. Now they are trying to create action in other ways. That is just a example of how manipulating the game in this way has a cause and effect.

Correlation is not causation. There are two things we don't know - the first is whether or not the massive evolution in velocity, spin, and pitch shape is having an impact. These innovations are being implemented at younger and younger ages. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is out with injury for the Dodgers, as is Joe Kelly. They perform vastly different roles. Clayton Kershaw is in his mid-thirties and only just this past year underwent his first surgery; High schoolers have already seen their first and even second surgeries. The second thing we don't know is whether or not this has been going on for years and without the innovative reconstructions and training techniques of today are covering of an issue that's always been there. Would Koufax have continued with today's technology? Tommy John, the guy who had the first elbow reconstruction, pitched for two more decades...now guys are only lasting 3-4 years despite innovations. Save your powder for when we learn more. The average MLB career lasts just a tick over three years. I'm not sure why things happen and you don't either.

complaining that the players have a tool to help them determine balls/strikes is SO soft by umps

Let's remove it from TV. The box is horrible and means nothing to what a strike is
@popgunandy
@popgunandy 3 месяца назад
Nor does it have any relation to what you can hit - some guys can't hit a strike to save their life but are notorious bad ball hitters. Pablo Sandoval, please pick up the nearest white courtesy phone. Good hitters swing at pitches they can drive, and foul off stuff they can't, no matter where they are thrown; they often spit on strikes they know they can't do anything with. The Giants broadcast had a great story about Orlando Cepeda after he passed this week. He talked about his two-strike approach where he purposely backed off the plate and then lunged in to go opposite field after enticing the pitcher to try and hit the outside corner. Hitting is hard, but it's an art, and good hitters work with what they're presented, not necessarily what's a strike.

I agree.. way over half of the strike zone complaints come from fans. Chances are that if no box is there most fans can't tell if the ball was a strike of not, unless is very obvious.

I don’t think baseball should have tablets during games, or especially of footage of live game, if it’s the pitcher/batters past performances of old games …. Maybe.

one good argument for not showing the strikezone is that the box is not entirely accurate. but that’s precisely the problem. the current strikezone rules are archaic and way too subjective. u can literally change the strikezone by pulling up ur pants. and if ur belt breaks and your pants sag, u’ll end up with a narrower strikezone. it’s silly. we need a more objective strikezone. it made sense when we didn’t have video cameras or computers, but technology has changed in the last 100 yrs.
@popgunandy
@popgunandy 3 месяца назад
The strike zone is objective but player stances, player height and pitch movement/velocity are all making it tougher to call balls and strikes. The system being used in select minor league games (a challenge system) seems to be working pretty well and takes just a few seconds. I've been to games where it's been in use and I like it.
@jsa790
@jsa790 3 месяца назад
@@popgunandyit depends what u mean by objective. sure, it’s defined. but the boundaries are subject to interpretation. so i would argue that there is an issue with the rules for the strikezone. it’s not precise.

@@popgunandythat’s not what i’m saying. yes i agree. the strikezone should adjust according to height, etc. i basically want to know where the true strikezone is for each pitch. right now, no one knows exactly. they have a pretty good idea, and given enough time people can draw a zone but even that is subject to disagreements.

The TV box is NOT accurate. Why are you whining about losing a tool that isn't that useful? There are real time digital tools that I see on other channels that are far better. Take MLB's perspective on this...the TV feed gives a player bad info that he then uses to misinform himself about the quality of a ball/strike call. How is anyone helped by that?
@PeterLindstrom-x4w
@PeterLindstrom-x4w 3 месяца назад
Agreed. And I'd argue that training yourself to see the ball in relation to the plate and your own body is going to be more helpful than seeing it in relation to a made-up box that neither you nor the umpire has access to when you're standing at the plate.
