I recently put everything in my pile of shame into a "random picker" app that spins a wheel and picks for you. I don't use it every time but when I want a fresh project or a break from army painting I spin the wheel. Adds a bit of excitement and helps me paint things I'd never get round to painting.

Jay! There is nothing wrong with painting a bunch of models that wont see play - they're outrageously cool? I've always dreamed of having a baker that was swinging around a ball on a chain like that one thug that confronts Bruce Wayne in the flashback during the animated old Batman movie "Mask of the Phantasm" but i've always been too scared that it would be super fragile - but I'll bet you could do it!

In this hobby, piles of shame are unavoidable. The best two strategies I have found to deal with it are: #1. Don't be scared of selling off large sections of your pile. I've always been able to sell stuff at a profit which is nice. #2. Get models commission painted. This really gets rid of piles fast, but only works if you can afford it and are willing to give up the modeling/painting aspect of the hobby.
@MrBizteck

Yes commission painting can be looked down on. But if you can afford it. Its great to get rid of stuff you will never paint yourself.

I think the worst reason to get more minis is: It's going to be gone soon... Like Indomitus and other Battleforce releases. GW and other companies know about out FOMO, and they milk it good... It's our own fault, but still. I hate pressure to buy something. Last such purchase (mostly because I wanted get back to gaming) was Indomitus. It contained many close combat units (unlike Dark Imperium) that I wanted for my Space Wolves since Primaris first showed up (DI). I just recently got into painting Indomitus Marines (primed them half a year ago) and decided not to buy anything model related until I get more models painted. That way I can save up for new army and finish what I have. I also need to liquidate what I won't need.

@ProrokLebioda
@ProrokLebioda 3 года назад
@@julianhennig3579 Yeah, had similar experience. Game was cool, but playing standard was like buying models and burning them when standard rotates. Keeps game fresh, but sucks. I didn't commit to top tier decks, but even my low tier budget one was bad "purchase" in the long run. I know, I can still play it in kitchen table games, but I can do the same with miniatures. I was about to get into commander, but in my area it was more of a 1v1 commander, without all politics and fun multiplayer games. I don't have friends that play so that was another factor. In AoS and WH40k (and all tabletop games) there are armies which have higher winrate, and units that are OP. Hobby aspect is what keeps me interested. I like painting, would like to play more, but I don't want to risk health for gaming, I can wait and paint.
@julianhennig3579
@julianhennig3579 3 года назад
@@ProrokLebioda Only play(ed) Commander. Still, there is huge FOMO just because if you don't buy all the good EDH cards at release chances are they increase in price over the years and pretty much become unobtainable if you don't intend to spend +200% and more money for it. This combined with the insane release schedule 2020 going forward just left me completely disenfranchised.

When it comes to trying to work down a pile of shame, I think sometimes you need to dial back just how much time you spend on some minis. For example, don't spend forever on the rank and file troops and just get them to a decent tabletop quality. Your time estimates came to 4 hours per mini, which is fine for more important characters but seems like overkill for basic troops that could be assembly lined and completed in a fraction of the time and would look perfectly fine on the table.
@Born_Stellar

personally every mini I paint is to my highest possible standard, so I have painted 16 minis in the 3 years since I started collecting warhammer. I have a lot on the go, though!
@joshuaclark3406
@joshuaclark3406 3 года назад
All depends on what you want out of the hobby. If like Necrodead said, he paints to the highest standard possible, that might be how they get their joy. But if you wanna smash through the hobby project to get models on the table to play, then yeah I agree wholeheartedly with your advice, and could use a little less-than-perfect mindset when I'm painting my fiftieth clanrat.

Your 330 minis isn't too bad! :) My pile of shame is 1265, I counted when Squidmar counted his pile of shame which is over 2000. Putting a number on it and then ticking it off has been working well for Squidmar. Since his video It has helped me as well , he is counting down on his pile during every video and it kicked my butt into gear to start painting again as well. What is the number to your shame (other watchers of this video)? Everyone should count their pile, I think it really helps.

I know this video isn't current now, but I think if you just primed a bunch one day and painted everything you want blue one day, green the next- like just do all of your flat colors in batches with the airbrush. You could probably do a "table ready paintjob", then just spend extra time on the stuff you are going to use soon or the stuff you really enjoy. That would probably cut this all down a lot.

Nearly halfway done building and painting the Blackstone fortress core set, need to strip all the blackstone fortress expansions and repaint them/ custom bases.. Nearly done building the orks from the Dominion box. Killaboss nearly done & painted. But looking at the new Kill Team box like yup, need to grab that. Even as a D&D dungeon master there is wayyyyy to much stuff from the warhammer side of the table that creeps into our campaigns. Nagash is just screaming to be the big bad at the end of our campaign. Undead lich lord that is summoning chaos back into the world to destroy it. Also the need to 3d print custom bases for all the blackstone minis, as well as all the custom terrain pieces. It never ends, but it all sparks the joy.

While watching this I was able to immediately able to lay my hand on a bag and count out 42 unpainted ork boys and 13 nobs from the Assault on Black Reach set, a smaller bag of two Catachan infantry platoons (about 50 models) and a box of savage orruks I use for feral Snake Bites. That's just one bag. I have boxes with bikers and deff koptas to finish as well. I know that I have almost a full company of Primaris marines but have never painted a single one. I have painted a grand total of one chaos model from the 6th edition starter set despite having three sets. The Death Guard from 8th edition (3 sets again) are all unpainted as are most of the Indomitus Necrons. I have a box of Imperial Guard infantry sprues that I've not assembled yet that I'm using for my next Praetorian army. When GW changed the Leman Russ and Chimera kits I made sure to buy a stockpile of the older, superior kits so I would have them when I needed them. This has given me a stack of boxed models about 5 feet tall and a number of large boxes filled with sprues. I bought a large box of terrain fortifications (remember the old macro cannon turret?) that have never seen even a spray can for undercoat, let alone a brush. None of this takes into account the various Warhammer Fantasy/AoS armies I have lying around or the non-GW models. That's not including the humans and ogres I intend to create yet another small 40k Imperial Guard army from. I could go on (and on and on and on...). Recently when going through my collection for models to use for my website I managed to find Imperial Knights that I had forgotten I even owned.

Yes! You can do it. I've churned through 1,500+ models in the last two years. My pile of shame has bottomed out a few times since and now stands at just 37 models. I think the biggest mistake you're making is to assign an arbitrary hour-count, that's the surest way to demotivate yourself and make the challenge seen insurmountable. Having two lists is very useful; one with the models remaining but also another keeping track of what you've completed is a great way to keep your motivation up. Also using your brain's tendency to procrastinate against itself by having a 'pariah' model sitting on your painting table can be useful - for some reason I had a mental block about painting a unit of Genestealer Neophytes, but having them sat there glaring at me spurred me on to paint so many other models rather than actually dealing with them. Then one evening I just picked up a brush and painted them without any issue.

Ways to paint more as a channel: 1 - Start doing more battlereports, be that pre-recorded or livestreams... 2 - Make one live every day like Chapter Master Valrak where you paint your minis and chat with your followers. 3 - Play Matched Plays with your friends, that battleready rule and 10 points for your models not being painted will change your mind to pick at least the ones that you are going to field and start putting some paint and base them :)

During lockdown last year I did something similar. Looked at everything I had. Estimated how long it would all take. Then I made a list of which projects I most excited to do. I took the bottom 20% and sold it off. Then with lockdown I made a huge push into tackling my pile. Now I have a few projects left instead of 12. It does feel better. I also don't feel as much pressure to get things done. I can take the time I want to do it right.

Im a ork player who has played for 10 years, I have collected well over 15,000 points of orks, of which I have the best part of 45+ warbikers (and another 7 or 8 HQs on warbikes). I would love to see you paint up your ork warbikes in a video and maybe have you show off some of the conversions you have done with them.. also yes they are a pain in the butt to build at first but after the 3rd box of them you get to know them pretty well, one of my all time favorite kits. Im also so jealous of those starship troopers mins, been looking for a set of the basic warrior bugs forever.

And I thought my pile of shame was bad...Jay could definitely bust out the terrain painting pretty quick. Seal the mdf terrain with dat pva glue watered down, quick spray paint black primer and then boom dry brush with different shades of gray, black wash and basically done. There goes half if not most of the terrain (at least buildings). Now the minis...that shit is going to take forever.

That is a pretty good pile o' shame. I think mine is roughly the same size! The only issue is that I have other hobbies and a family to tend to, so my painting hours are somewhat less than you- especially on weekends. Though, as you know, I do get in a good 5-6 hours a week, which is more than a lot of folks, so I shouldn't complain. For your next painting project, you should paint a piece of terrain! Maybe something from that Kill Team set. It would be a great change of pace.

Every time you mention Genestealer Cults, the CC display's "jean stealer", and now I have to make an army of pants-thievin' cultists. Love your videos!

I also have an epic level pile of shame. One way I am managing it nowadays is when a Codex comes out, I focus on that faction (Build, primer, paint.) If a Codex comes out that I don't have figures for, I focus on the largest backlog until the next Codex comes out. This may change when things open up again and conventions start, but right now, it's been helping to use the excitement of the new Codex to propel working on that force.

After taking a hiatus from my 40k space marines and painting up 1500 points of necrons, I'll now finally tackle the 100s of marines still on sprue for my 30k project, so I feel you! Of course, poor impulse control made me buy a superheavy tank for that project before I even started, but, hey, at least I'm starting now, right? Keep on buying and, maybe, painting 👍🏻

I JUST finished going through and organizing my entire collection - painted and unpainted. The pile of shame is at least now neatly in 3 boxes and I know what I have -- including models I completely forgot that I bought. This inspired me to get some of them going again and this past week I finished my Imperial Guard army -- made of the original plastic miniatures. It's been at least 20 years since I bought them, and I have used them in a half-painted state during that time, but now they are done, done, done. On to the space marines -- you know, the original beaky marines that I bought in 2003 -- who are similarly half-done. But I want them done, done! Oh, also -- just wait until you have to go through your pile with your spouse or SO watching lol. At least my wife has also started collecting and painting minis and has her own (very small) pile to paint. And she said what you said -- it's a hobby where I spend time at home with the family and the whole family is now enjoying it. It's not the worst (or even most expensive!) hobby to have.

I'm with you on the grey knights, I bought a box of terminators that are all on lava bases just cuz they look so awesome. Probably never going to play grey knights, but that won't stop me from getting more termies :)

“My name is Jay, and I’m addicted to tabletop miniatures. It’s been 8 hours since I put brush to model.” “Hi, Jay!” 👋🏼 The biggest step in doing something about your addiction is admitting that you have a problem. 😉 Thanks for the video, Jay- I love your channel, and watch your videos in blocks of 3, generally, so it’s approximately an hour of content while I’m painting. I’m so glad I subscribed! (“I have 5 Nobs, I have 5 more Nobs…”- Damn, you must be popular with the ladies 😆)

I almost did the same with the Halo Space Combat Miniatures game... super niche and no one would play it with me so I just couldn't justify it no matter how cool all the ships looked. No lie, if you were close I would totally come to play that Starship Troopers game haha
