I just modded my Reddragon Kumara the other day, and as a tip to strip those annoying thin wires that don't strip cleanly with the wire stripper, make two or three shallow cuts into the insulation with a box cutter or any other sharp knife, then pull the insulation with your nails. The wire will strip cleaning without loosing strands. If your keyboard has RGB and you use it on all the time I'd be careful soldering the red cable because a bad connection (i-e more resistance) could make it overheat or make your keyboard malfunction due lack of current.
Fun fact: my Das Keyboard 4's non-detachable cable is actually detachable! Internally it just has a standard USB 3 micro-B connector plugged into a daughterboard. So with a $6 adapter cable I now have a USB-C Das Keyboard that still supports USB 3 I've been meaning to convert my Race 3 to USB-C as well and this video has definitely given me the inspiration needed lol
Awesome! I was actually eyeing my das keyboard 4 pro from across the room when I saw this video. Glad to hear it was successfully converted! Can’t wait to do mine! 😊
It's C for common, its a term we use in electronics since its a common area to put your ground or negative in. I EXTREMELY recommend putting hot glue or epoxy to secure it or over time you might yank the breakout board accidentally
I was just thinking about doing this to a mouse for the same reasons, could be tricky for space though, and if the cable comes lose with gaming it could be more frustrating than helpful. Nice video man!
Was literally going to buy a whole new custom keyboard as of the usb c but found this video and I have now just bought that type c converter UPDATE: worked brilliantly only problem I encountered was a short circuit on the usb c port all it took was some insulation tape
I got a budget mechanical keyboard that is really valuable to me not in terms of price. The keyboard was from my girlfriend. I went home I went home from school (I'm in College) and just saw my keyboard's USB plug dented and flat. I tried to fix it but it fits too tightly now when being plugged to my laptop which I am afraid might break when plugging and unplugging. It's not a detachable cord so I am definitely going to try this out since the connections and soldering seems simple to me since I am studying electronics engineering. I just needed the guidance of this video for assurance lol. Trying this soon once my Type C female breakout board arrived!
Update: Well like I said, I'm an ECE student so it was a bit simple for me and of course it works as I expected. But since I do not have shrink tubes for now, what I did is is since I stripped the four wires a bit long and my type C female breakout board does not have a hole, the excess stripped wires was covered with electrical tape to avoid any contact to each other which may cause shorting. And then wrapped the four again as whole with electrical tape again this time, to be secured. As I do not have a putty like what I'm planning in the first place, I just melted extra black plastics from random things using my extra soldering iron. That way, the breakout board is intact and looks good since I used plastic and just did a bit of sanding
Been thinking about doing this to my Razer Cynosa Chroma since if someone walked on the cable it would just unplug rather than break at the USB A connector lol... Using it for gaming on the TV so it happens a lot.. The connector is pretty mangled and this keyboard works fine for me :P
Recommend one iron, uses hakko XD. Hakko is the way! I though for this for long time (though I already bought only usb c boards XD), but usb c mod felt more like forum urban legend good you made vid XD
Ima try this on my mouse and keyboard later today ima keep yall updated on this comment. Hopefully I don't break everything ! Edit/Update: It worked !!! Now I'm going to make my own coiled cable with aviator conection!!connection!!! Woooo. USB type C and cool cables !!!!! LETTS GOOOO!!!. Also, I'm switching the switches to yellow ones !!! Woooo!!!!! So glad I did this. I'll keep yall posted on the switches and custom cable here!.
Yo quick reply! On my seccond keyboard.! The 2nd one i modded it with lots of keybord mods. Works great!. USB TYPE C detacable, lubed switches.... more and more. now im on to my mouse! Watch out. LEETSS GOO!!!!!!!!
"do you hate it when you have a beautiful keyboard with a non detachable cable?" if a keyboard has a nondetachable cable it would not really be that beautiful XD
Hey! First off, thanks for the video. Really helpful. However, my Keyboard has the following wires: - Yellow - Green - White - Black - Red Could you help me out here? What to do with the Yellow wire?
Yellow is essentially an extra ground wire that connects to the shielding of the cable. You can ignore it or just solder it to the black wire together to reduce EMI.
@@dalehenrirenomeron3188 I left it hanging! Obviously, before putting everything together, I tested how it would work with just leaving the extra wire hanging. After making sure it works, I put everything back together.
Thanks mate. With all respect, it is just the half of the job as you cannot use the keyboard in wireless mode, so your showcase is only useful if you want to replace the keyboard wire.
i bought a Rexus keyboard that came with non detachable cables. but then the Rexus team made a detachable version for their newer revision of my current keyboard. and since my cable is pretty much damaged, im going to change it to type c. its easier to replace the cable that way.
So what do I do with the fifth wire of my keyboard have five wires instead of four? I’ve tried just putting the extra wire to the ground as it’s a bare copper capable. But nothing works. So I ended up having to resolder my keyboards cable back together. Can anyone answer this question?.
You don’t even have to use a breakout board. Get a USB 2.0 (or whatever cable your keyboard uses) to Type C female adapter and just use that. Wires are already on it. Ez as cheese.
Hey Juju. I bought my wife a Glorious Full size keyboard and sadly, the cable is also not detachable. I haven't opened the keyboard yet. I tried looking for tutorials on how I would make the cable detachable but only end up with teardown videos. My problem now is that those teardown videos show the connector of the GMMK has 5 wires, unlike yours that only has 4. Could you help me out on this one? Thank you!
Hand made, highest quality parts and made to last. Buy one JUJU Cable, forget the rest and get connected to your tech. :) Thanks for your support khayi! :)
Hey, i have iKBC mf 87 with rgb b. My micro Usb port is broken. Now i want to fix it. But i have 5 wires. i have white, green, red and 2x black. I think because of RGB. But how do i connect those with Adafruit USB C Breakout Board.
Hey JUJU I can't find usb c breakouts but i can find micro B and micro USB breakout boards, can they still be used and does the voltage and current matter? I found a 5V 1A. Im pretty sure the power should not matter, right?
Yes! You would have to remove the MINI USB port and then glue this pcb to the back - or where there is space. I made an older video on how I did this to a GH60. Check it out but it's super old :)
Hey Juju! I'm trying to do this for a razer blackwidow but it has an additional black wire. I have the adafruit usb c breakout board from the description
"I have so many tools that only I use" Now that you've recommended them, that's no longer the case. ;) Sorry, stupid joke. I know you meant "I only use" rather than "only I use". Edit: Also I like the recommended USB soldering iron. Although, the pinecil is about the same price, goes hotter, and seems to have more features for the display/os. On the other hand, pinecil's are all out of stock until sometime later this month, which is a bummer.
Hey man I appreciate the tutorial you made but I have a small problem I just followed the steps you said in the vid one problem for me is that when I plug the type c cord, only the lights are working but the keyboard isn't detected what might be the problem to this? thanks man
Hello and thanks for the tuto! I've bought the "(RECOMMENDED) - USB C Breakout (with 56k resistor)" as recommended for USBA but I'm kind of lost and need to know which one I need to solder ? Thanks :)
Great content, I'm unsure whether you'll reply after an year of uploading this. So, I've a G512 (G513 Globally). It has 2 usb connections one for the keyboard and another for an additional usb socket in the keyboard. Could you guide on what is to be done? Thanks, have already purchased the necessary stuff from your link. Will really appreciate a reply.
You could buy a USB 2.0 hub and take out the pcb. Then put the pcb inside the keyboard. One port is soldered to the Keyboard and the other to the additional internal USB socket. The main USB hub cable is then wired to the main port that connects to the PC.
Im going to try this in my MSI Vigor GK80. I dont know if it would work properly because this model has a cable with two USB connectors to allow an USB passthrough on the keyboard. As long as the keyboard works is fine, I dont mind if I lose the USB passthrough capability. My main keyboard is a 60% (modded Anne Pro 2) and I would love to be able to change it easily when I need a full keyboard. I have my keyboard connected with an usb c coiled cable with gx12 aviator connector and it would be awesome if I could use the same cable to connect my two keyboards as I please. I've ordered the adafruit usb c breakboard and a jst ph 5 pin connector with 30 cm of cable to try if it works without damaging the original cable.
@JUJU that's awesome! Thanks again for the video, I'm quite new to mechanical keyboard haha, and Your videos are a great way to learn and get infos about them. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, I wanted to do this as well but the USB-C Breakout in the link is totally different than the one in the video. Why is that? It is way too bulky for most keyboards to solder in place!
Hey, I don't know if you read your comments but I bought the first breakout board you recommended and I'm just a little unsure as to how to solder my keyboards wires onto it as its more of a hole instead of a pad like what the the one in the video looks like, do i just stick the wire through and fill up the hole with solder?
I have a mechanical that is REALLY OLD that got flooded and a bit (dried) muddy and i need to change the big and old 5-pin connector and upgrade it to usb-c to usb. You think i cn upgrade it to that? Like it is a 1996 mechanical keyboard....i want to show what the pcb looks like and the connection of the wire because i dont know which materials to buy so i could upgrade and (hopefully) get it to work. I cant see adaptors for it.
can I do this on my non mechanical keyboard? i have a membrane one and in my country, mechanical keyboards are expensive and i needed a cheap long lasting one and was forced to buy membrane
@@goodjihad the extra one looks like this preview.redd.it/seifjvioij691.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=532296eb193cbb2425490ac1352b57e846f62468
I have rakk xtle and ithas 5 wires 2 black im glad i didnt cut it first. Can you tell me where those 2 black wires goes? Done research cant find answer
