Hi Phillip. Glad you are feeling a bit better. I think having the flange on the new skin helps to get it positioned nice and leaves a good are for a weld to sit in. I've heard a lot of guys say that a butt weld is the right way to go but it has been my experience that a butt weld is difficult and time consuming to finish properly and is very easy to burn through when welding. Happy New Year! -mike
I think if you were real good with a TIG, and had a planishing hammer to really work down the seam, you could cut the lip off and work it out so you could barely see the weld when done. But, I don't have a planishing hammer, and I'm just going to MIG it up, so I thought leaving the lip would work just fine. I think this route is going to be faster for sure. Happy New Year!
Nice score on the new addition to the shop... Free is always good,, even if some minor rewording/repairs are needed... sure was sketchy on the unloading,, But, glad you got it back on Terafirma with no problem...lol Looks like the lower skin patch is going to work out well... I believe that leaving the top lip in place should also add some additional strength to the outer skin ... Take care and Happy New Year to you and your friend, my friend....
One thing this car has more than anything else is rust LOL. People don't believe me when I say there aren't many cars to choose from in my area. I looked for a few years for a coupe before I found this car, I just couldn't find one and I had other car buddies helping me look. A friend actually found this one. The good thing is, I only paid about half of what bodies in better condition were going for outside my area. So, I had room to work as far as my financial investment, but the time it has taken to get this body right has been unreal. I'll probably never build another car this bad, but at least I'm going to prove that it can be done, and every car with rust in it doesn't have to be a rat rod. the sad part is, I see people building rat rods out of better cars, and this one is going to be slick painted. I'm definitely earning it, that's for sure! Hope you all have a great new year!
Nice work on the door Phillip, always a toss up with aftermarket panels whether they will have the same profile as the original panels but yours seem to fit perfectly! Great job! Happy New Year to you and your family Phillip and all the best in the new year!
