Modern Sonar Sounds and other Sounds of the Sea

Some recordings of modern sonar "Pings".
They sound much more different from how the movies show them.
Originally the LFA signals have a sound level of 220 dB, but by definition every sound appears 26 dB louder under water. This means that such a sonar would have a sound level of approx. 195 dB in the air. This is as much, as a space rocket start...

@Inertia888
@Inertia888 3 года назад
@@Falcoyeahh On land, in the air, if a soundwave is very, very loud, it can be considered a shockwave, usually from some sort of explosion. When sound is so loud that it is no longer technically "sound", but shockwave, it can kill. When underwater, sound travels much, much faster and further. Same principle, really. So a SONAR ping, if close enough, will have basically the same type of effect that a shockwave has when on land, except for when underwater, the sound energy does more damage. So you can kinda think of it like standing near and explosion, when you see the blast wave rip stuff apart after a detonation, sound can do that underwater too. But SONAR isn't an explosion, just a shockwave.
@Wrackzeichner
@Wrackzeichner 3 года назад
Most accurate answer by now. The speed of sound in water is about 3 times higher, than in the air. Perception of the same sound underwater is about 26 dB louder, than in the air, which means about 600 times louder.
@olivialambert4124
@olivialambert4124 Год назад
@@Inertia888 That's fundementally wrong. Yes a loud sound can kill, but active sonar isn't anything near to the breakdown of sound in water. In this case the term shockwave is incredibly misleading, the comparison between this and an explosion is very misleading, and the sound is in every way "technically sound", no different to any other. Its simply because sound is alternating pressures. The high pressures will crush delicate organs, the low pressures will also do devastating damage with the speed of the pressure change. It isn't anywhere near the breakdown of sound itself, where molecules will rip apart as the intermolecular forces aren't strong enough to withstand the immense pressures and the water instantly boils then pops (cavitation). When sound breaks down you aren't getting the constant oscillating of sound. You aren't getting the accurate frequencies required for modern sonar. It really is like an explosion, and just like an explosion it damages everything around it including the hardest materials we could use. It also sounds like an explosion, not like a speaker playing a frequency. And as we already know cavitation would be a great way to significantly block the return pulses from pulse generated, precisely why ships are now using intentionally generated cavitation to degrade enemy sonar pulses.
