Modern Window Trim - 10 ways

Architects often think about projects in terms of systems. It’s one of our strategies for organizing the complexities of construction into a coherent whole. Each system has an order and interfaces with the other building components in a clear way. Windows have a special place in our systems. They help to define site connections, permit or screen views, and modulate natural light entering our spaces.
When thinking about how window systems integrate into the larger structure, I like to develop a clear logic that describes how they’re placed in walls, which always requires adopting an attitude toward trim. Trim is a standard vehicle for hiding joints where materials come together - the edges of Sheetrock are a good example. Trim can also set a building in a particular time period.
But to me, the more integrated even a small detail such as trim is with an idea about a place or structure, the more it can support the overall logic of a building. The following projects eschew traditional ideas about trim in service of a bigger, modern idea.
In this video I cover 10 approaches to trimming windows:
- ultra-thin
- extension jamb
- reveals
- drywall returns
- extension jamb hybrids
- stone trim
- steel trim
- white-on-white
- wood-on-wood
- no trim

This is incredible, but you know what will take it to the next level... annotations. I know it's a tall ask with you being busy but it will add another dimension to these types of videos that talk about details. Thank you for this channel

Great video Eric, thanks for sharing. I wonder if you could speak to your relationship with architectural reps. In the case of windows, what info/services do you find most useful and what do your favorite reps do for you to make your projects a success?

Really like the clean look. On the other hand, I have to throw all my junk out to achieve that look.

Thank you for the high quality content. I'd love to see a video about windows from the exterior of a building. I have a 1977 half split level and I'm trying to figure out the siding and windows. They currently have a cheap pvc traditional style trim. I would like to remove that and bring a cement panel siding right up to the window for a more clean and modern look. Is that possible? How? Thanks so much for you quality content.

I wasn't expecting much from this topic. Wow. Great information and delivery. I should know better by now. :-)

Yes very much, I find his videos very addictive lol. So much to learn and I feel as an Architect student much of our designs are dictated by our prior knowledge and exposure to different material and design options.

Great video. I know it's a few years old, but can you remove the "other suggested video pop-ups" at the end as they cover design #10 for most of its duration.

I wonder if anyone else feels the same as I regarding the windows at 2:37. For me I find the symmetry of the large windows and the density of the woods outside make my eyes feel overwhelmed with to much information to take in at once. Anyone else feel the same?

Great segment. Do you have any information on specific vinyl beads used when creating shadow reveals around windows? Any tips on getting tight mitred, outside corners on all corners with vinyl reglets? Thanks. (Enjoying the series of videos!)

Cheers...thanks for watching...check out Trim-Tex Architectural F Reveal Bead or Z-shadow (vinyl), or Pittcon's STR series (aluminum). The alum product will net a cleaner outside corner, but it's more expensive. Good luck!

I went with the f-type from Trim Tex. The project is still in progress. Overall I think it will work out well. I'm inclined to try the z-shadow next time around. We had the finishing carpenter set the doors first and then ran the drywall and f-reveal up to the jambs. We have some areas where a portion of the F-reveal edge extends beyond the door (side/head) jambs as the depth is not consistently 1/2" (i.e. pre-hung door had to be set plumb). I suspect this would be an issue with the z-type. Thanks again for creating the content.

Is steel a particularly expensive trim around windows or simply as the base of the window?

also interested in this idea - can't seem to find much information on how it's done.
