In this second video, I continue by making modifications to the motor portion of the impact in an attempt to free up even more torque.
Here are some links to good impacts:
AIRCAT 1150: amzn.to/41TSAC7
Ingersoll Rand 2235TiMAX: amzn.to/44ki39C

The number one thing you could’ve done was to polish the inner diameter of the vane contact service. Rotary vane devices suffer major leakage which is where the veins contact the inner periphery of the cylinder. This is their major source of power loss By simply polishing the inner peripheral of of where the vanes actually contact, and then polishing the vein tips would have the most drastic affect. You were trying to create more airflow when you needed to fix the sealing of the vane tips.Even microscopic scratches cause major league age of the air pressure around the vanes. So instead of 100 psi or whatever you’re using pushing on the back side of the veins, you’re only getting like 70 psi exerting force on to the vanes. Also the only thing that pushes the veins out word is air pressure and centrifugal forces, by also utilizing springs underneath the veins this also greatly AIDS and sealing the vein tips to theHousing. If you take apart any vein type air motor, ones that put out up to 9 hp, all use some type of a spring mechanism to push the Veins more forcefully to create a better seal. The rotary Vane Are positive displacement devices which means they operate on pressure more than airflow.

Just came back to like and comment - on this comment. I have a nearly 20 year old CP-734H impact that was becoming nearly useless. I took it apart this weekend, cleaned up the bore to get rid of any spots that could damage the vanes, cleaned up the sealing edge of the vanes, reassembled, and have nearly new power in my wrench now. Interestingly, to my eyes, this looks like the impact featured in this series was based on. There is definitely a major difference in tolerences, as mine would at least still take off lug nuts even with all of the wear, scratches and damage.

I've always wondered if they could be improved. I purchased a couple of cheap ones off a clearance table tears ago for peanuts. I couldn't believe how bad they were compared to my better guns. Thanks for saving me some time.

Send it to the torque test channel and get a new one, just to see if the mods made a difference. The airflow was cleaned up massively, the hammer mechanism in there is what is holding it back

Very nice 2 part video, and quite detailed. It is my opinion that the power delivered is a result of the hammer/clutch and air delivery to the tool. Having larger "openings" will increase air flow, but will also reduce pressure. I would suggest leaving the internals as-is (except cleaning and lubricating the insides) and working on the delivery to the tool. Use 1/2 ID hose, and if need be, a 3/8 hose as a whip. Make sure your fittings are 3/8 and you have no reducers from the 3/8. On the compressor itself, make sure the regulator is wide open, or better yet, remove it. Even wide open it restricts air out. Most people set the regulator at 90 psi (tool spec) not realizing that the air hose itself reduces that. You want to supply 110 on your tank, or if you are "supercharging" like this video intends, use it wide open.

Thanks, I think the hammer mechanism is the key, I've been able to put way more than enough air through it and there isn't any noticeable improvement past a certain point. There just isn't enough mass to the hammers to perform any better. It works good as a light duty wrench than can be used on bolts you don't want to snap off though.
@brian_youtube
@brian_youtube 4 года назад
@@SteveStoltz Agreed. You can only do so much by increasing air flow before it stops. The big thing for me was changing the 1/4 couplers and plugs to 3/8, and running all 3/8 air hose. You just reach a point that the tool is doing all it can due with the parts it has.

I have the same one, a great impact for the price, and it has handled almost anything I needed. I've used the common air connections for years, but I'm switching out my old air connections to a larger ID size, to increase air volume first.

Air hose -> 1/2 inch ID. Plug Fittings -> 3/8 min, No restrictions (regulator) on the compressor output = happy user.

I put a t joint on my 5 hp compressor before the regulator so I can have straight from the tank pressure oiled up the gun and it did the job with no problem it would not before. I am going to build a desiccant air dryer to install between that and the hose. The gun is a cheap HF type. Worked like a charm.

Have you considered opening the rotor housing a bit, so the vanes can extend further. More surface area on a pneumatic motor equals more driving power.

Thanks for sharing. You can do these same upgrades to older, but better impacts like the old Mac/I.Rand b/c of some similar designs like the exhaust holes/ports. I prefer corded electric impact, I went w/ a gently used Kobalt thanks to the RealToolReviews youtube channel, he's good & has amazing equipment that looks like its at his home. Thanks again, - take care from TN.

I have the same impact as that. I used a brake hone and honed the motor larger and eliminated the imperfections it came with to minimize air loss. But I don't think you have enough material left to do that. I also made vanes out of plastic. With only those modifications it has a lot more power. Oh yeah 3/8 hose 1/4 Milton L fittings 125 psi and 34 cfm air pressure and volume. I find that honing made the most difference
@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz 7 лет назад
That's a good Idea that I hadn't thought of, It seems like it would have a similar effect as changing gear ratios, since the vanes are extending out further. My dad gave me a box of tools that included another one of these impacts, I may try just boring the motor out on that one and compare it to all of the things I did to this one.

I can hear the air just escaping through it, not spinning the motor. Losses a lot of air in the motor.

You can get a lot more out of impact guns if you upgrade you air supply to a larger inside diameter,,,pressure 125 psi,,,general rule of thumb,, 3/8" impact is for 3/8" and small bolts,,,1/2" impact is for 1/2 to 3/8 and so on,,,nice vid you spent a lot of time on it

Thanks, I currently have 3/8 id hose and fittings on everything, a little overkill in some cases but overall it seems to work pretty well.

one thing you didn't modify was the hammering mechanism, that's why you didn't get much tq out your mods' what you archive was more speed. remember if you let it fall one hammer that weight 2oz from one feet to your foot nothing happens, but if was 5 pounds hammer, definitely it will hurt and make some damage. same principle apply to impact wrenchs. also that happen with sockets too. use heavy socket with the smaller gun, it will probably take off the lug nuts without hesitation.
@eaglewarrior8707
@eaglewarrior8707 6 лет назад
Have you tried taking the weight of the vehicle off the wheel? And tried torquing the lug nuts onto the wheel so they are not tight to the point where they are warping the rotar and bending the threads? Because you might have seized them on by tightening them onto the rotar by using just the impact gun.

Your Problem is the Hose! You need an Hose with a min inner diameter of 9mm or more.You can hear the powerfull Start and then the Pressuredrop. Its a Turbine that needs Flow.So go directly to the Tank without any Pressure regulator inbetween .You should have 10Bar or 140PSi on the Compressor. When you Fire the Impact by using an 10m Hose with 9mm inner you habe around 2Bar or 28PSI Pressuredrop on the Toolfitting.

In this video I'm using a 1/2 inch id hose with 3/8 fitting and 150+ psi right out of the compressor. That should be able to supply all the air this thing needs.

@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz 4 года назад
I don't have an exact torque number, but it did increase it a pretty decent amount. I use it for light things that I don't want to snap off etc. I did a video using a torque wrench to tighten the nuts then used the wrench to remove them, its definitely not scientific but gives a ballpark Idea.

+maik carrillo The Harbor Freight model # is 68424 (Earthquake). I use a 3/8 air fittings and I removed the wad of muffler material, other than that Ive done nothing to it. The gun is OK with the 1/4 fitting, but it responds to the 3/8 fitting really well. Its well worth the price i my opinion, especially with the coupon.

But you don't really know what the torque setting is of either modes on the red gun. What's the torque MEANT to be for the car? 90ftlbs? You might be hitting it 150 or more. Nice vid though, I've got a similar gun that's equally crap so it might be worth performing some surgery on it.
@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz 8 лет назад
+Mickleblade I agree, it was like comparing apples to oranges, the red gun is a beast(700 ft lbs total) and on the #1 setting is deceiving because it doesn't feel like its doing anything. If i were to do it over again I would torque the nuts to several settings and see at what point the wrench breaks them loose. Although not as dramatic as I had hoped, the mods definitely improved the torque output, it would be good for lighter weight stuff like pulling apart small engines, mower blades etc without snapping off bolts. I feel it was worth the time spent.
@mickleblade
@mickleblade 8 лет назад
+Steve Stoltz my cheapy wrench can't undo a nut that was specifically tightened to 81ftlbs and I was looking to see what can be done with it. Mine is a) bone dry, no oil and b) the air is limited by passing a ball bearing that's used as the switch. I haven't checked the 4 position selector yet, perhaps I can remove it altogether. Thanks for the vid and response though.
@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz 8 лет назад
+Mickleblade No Problem. I go through the inlet in the first video, if you can remove enough material from the rod that pushes the bearing out of the way that frees up quite a bit of space for airflow. I noticed a decent improvement in the speed and feel of it from just the mods to the inlet portion. good luck

the hammers are junk and the veins do not fit in the slits tight so they loose huge power, in your video you can see the nasty lines in the veins. next you get to learn brakes from over tightening your lug nuts , distorting rotors and drums

Yeah, over torquing isn't advised, that was for demonstration purposes only lol. Brakes are fine I didn't go too far past spec, I've had tire shops tighten the lugs way tighter and never had an issue other than needing a breaker bar to get the things off.
