Modifying the Digidesign Digi 002 

I'm getting my box back in a couple weeks or less. The team is hopefully in the middle of diagnosing my unit's problems right now. I''ll write up my thoughts on it when it gets here!

That's what AD/DA converters do for your sound! it seems louder with better conversion but really it's just clearer and more detailed. he had the volumes matched.

I gotta say, this mod makes a pretty huge difference. I've used a stock 002 and now have the BLA 002. This deathrape dude can say whatever he likes and offer as many free soloutions as he wants, but at the end of the day - BLA turn a hobbyists piece of kit into something that gets great polished sounds a great deal easier than a stock 002. For someone wanting to get a Pro Tools interface with HD sound without the HD pricetag, BLA are doing great stuff...

Even with such LoFi audio I can hear the difference. It has sweeter high end and defined low end.

@Deathrape2001 It's not really intended to be a review, as it is being presented by the guy that does the mods. @dante75915 You are right, you would get the same, and in some cases better, from a good converter with a nice preamp. I'm thinking of getting a BLA Sparrow MkII for my set up down the road rather than the mod.

@Deathrape2001 The sample rate debate will more than likely never end, but running at 96 does help effects and VST instruments, though you are right that DVD and CD use less. Bit rate on the other hand is much less debated as having a higher dynamic range going into the box really does improve the final product once it is dithered down. Also note I said I record often at 24/44.1. I had a Behringer EP2500, good amp. I never said "obsolete garbage", so please don't misquote me.

AD conversion arguments aside, sound quality-wise it probably wouldn't have hurt to tune the snare first :)

@Deathrape2001 Also, I would give a listen to this weeks Home Recording Show. One of the guys had a chance to test out a couple really high end converters, and they have a discussion about converter qualities and the mentality of blaming the converter. They're one of the last things they recommend upgrading, but they do play a part.

Hello. Where could I take my old Digi 002 to get a similar service as showed on this video? I know this is old technology but it is still very useful to me. Any info is very much appreciated. Thank you so much!

@Deathrape2001 Haven't used any Apple hardware... and didn't know they made any, computers and whatnot not withstanding. Unless you're using your computers AD I don't really see how it would effect the sound of a recording as you bypass a computers AD/DA completely when you use an interface. As for the Soundmax chipset, how did you get it to work with your DAW? Are you soundcard based? Or wired your own AD? May be something worth looking into if I can get it to work with my interface.

@Deathrape2001 Also, in regards to the soundmax chipset, it is an interesting tip but somewhat useless in context of recording as every version I have found online is not only an integrated chipset, they all cap out at 16/48 and I record most of my work at 24/96 or 24/44.1. It sounds like we are talking about two very different things as the more I look into this "tip" you keep giving me, the more it looks irrelevant to my needs, and those who would be looking at a video about a 002.

@Deathrape2001 Oh come on now, no need to be rude. When I refer to hardware I mean recording equipment (recording interfaces, preamps, ext), which is why I was wondering why you were bringing up Apple in regards to this video. I have never been in a studio that uses an Apple computer for AD, unless you count those who use a Mac pro with an HD or MADI set up, but again that bypasses any Apple hardware effecting the audio itself.

@Deathrape2001 Once again, I ask if you read my last post where I have no mention of sample rate. You seem to be taking this personally and I am not sure why as even you say you don't care. I ask once again though, what converters do you have experience with that have brought you to the conclusion that the soundmax sounds better than a pro device? Being a hobbyist, I am no expert as I have only tried about six in three studios, but I would like to know which pro devices you compared it to.

Was the modified sm pro use on the unmodified digi 002 when collecting these results?

@Deathrape2001 Did you even read my last post? The point I end with is that it is not recommended to upgrade your converters blindly. If your set up gets good results all the power to you, but I need more than your free option has to offer for my line of work. Have you compared it to anything top dollar? Somewhat curious of your experience with other converters. Also, if we are going to continue this debate could you please speak like an adult? I am finding it hard to take you seriously.

Or was it just tracked into the unmodded 002 directly without any other units.

I apologize to anyone who has had to suffer through this "debate". My intent was to come to the defence of a small company that is doing something unique and all together helpful for the recording community. I hope I composed myself respectfully, but the whole thing turned rather childish. More db dosn´t mean it sounds better. This test wasn´t done properly, even if the mod sounds better you loose credibility, I uploaded the audiofile to my editor and compared the obvious and the 003 is way below 0dbs as for the blacklion is almost always peaking on 0dbs

@MaxSplVideos 1 of the best converters in existence is the Analog Devices 'Soundmax' surround chipset (tiny $7 motherboard chip) commonly found on 'junk throwaway obsolete' PCs U can find on the street 4 free, as well as many new ones. It has no clock, but locks 2 the CPU, so there is no jitter, & is totally flexible with sample rates as it doesn't purposely cripple N E usability there, like so many 'after market' systems do. B sure 2 use the native drivers from AD, not 3'rd party ones.
