Took me about 45 minutes to do this, most of which was spent pulling the old cartridge out. The new one went in a lot easier than the old one came out.

I'm sure it isn't a prevalent issue, but I find it funny that not many tutorials like this, especially ones done by 'pros', mention plugging the drain in case you lose your hold on the screw or some other tiny bit of hardware that might decide to complicate your day with a vanishing act. ; ]

Step 1. Cover the drain. 7/64" hex wrench is used to remove the grub for those searching for it.

Have to laugh when some say it took only 3 minutes to install. I have decades of experience with plumbing, and replacing this cartridge literally took a FULL DAY! This is mostly because of complications from internal corrosion of the faucet handle (etc), yet it is really not that old because I had installed it new. The cartridge itself is way too complex in operation, necessitating various warnings about correct alignment. A good design should not be possible to install incorrectly. Now done, basically works, but must admit no one is happy how it dispenses water. Not intuitive. Cannot predict just how to move the handle to get correct water flow from this strange cartridge behavior.

Yes. Apparently the 3-minute repairs are troll positive reviews. There are so many alignments that aren’t made clear in this short vid.

The Moen cylindrical cartridge design is ridiculous, but was the only way to compete in single-handle faucets against Delta's patented ball design in the 1960s. Now the patents are all expired, but we are still stuck with these defective concepts.

Had a hell of a time replacing the stuck 1225 cartridge. One trick is to drip some white vinegar on to the cartridge and let it seep down into the valve body. This helps break up whatever is making the cartridge stick.

The video depicts the cartridge as easily removable. That ain’t the case as in most plumbing applications. I purchased my replacement cartridge from Lowe’s and it came with a plastic cartridge removal tool. It works great, use it or start increasing your arm strength.

This video was extremely helpful. Thank you for posting it. I made a mistake and went to a local hardware and bought an off brand for about 8 bucks cheaper. It was a schoosh too long and to big in diameter. Spend the extra for a Moen cartridge. You'll end up much happier. I was.

This video still works for those of us with older faucets! Well done and very clear. However, it took me a little fiddling to align the retainer clip properly, but if you look closely the video shows you where it should align. Also, probably because the faucet is 15 years old, the handle adapter sleeves were somewhat seized and tricky to align properly. But a little gentle contemplation and fiddling had it sorted out in no time. Thanks again for the very clear and accurate video--other videos make it look like a horrendously complex task!

It's funny that at the hardware store they have a variety of replacement cartridges, all with the little plastic thing that helps to loosen and remove the old cartridge. But how many people know what model cartridge is in the wall or faucet that needs to be removed? I'd have to remove it to see what replacement I need! Luckily Moen doesn't have too many replacement cartridges. I ended up buying a cartridge pulling tool which was probably overkill as it came out fairly easily.

@soccerhelpvideo

Use the white plastic tool that comes with the new 1225 cartridge it to loosen the old one so it will hopefully slide out by pulling it with pliers - the white tool is a cap that fits on top of the old cartridge - loosen the old cartridge by using pliers to turn the white cap to the right and left and back 10 or 12 times (you will feel it getting easier to turn). I replaced 5 cartridges and on 2 of them the black plastic tore off. I had to use a Cartridge extraction tool to get 3 of them out. It seems like the more the faucet has been used, the more likely it is that it will be hard to pull out the old cartridge. If it is old (mine were about 14 years old) and won''t come out, buy the Moen Cartridge Puller for the 1225 cartridge, or the Danco brand - that was the only way I could get my 1225 cartridge out - it uses a screw action to pull out the cartridge. - I think if you just try to use brute force by pulling with pliers that you could damage the faucet. When you pull out the old cartridge, check it closely to see if all the black rubber is there - if some is missing, it is still inside the tube. When I pulled it out the black rubber had torn off and was still inside the faucet. Get a flashlight and look and clean out the gunk in the tube that the cartridge came out of. In my case, the rubber had gotten inside the holes on the right and left side of the tube where the hot and cold water come out of. I was able to get the rubber out of one hole by using needle nose pliers but to get it out of the other hole I had to get under the sink, disconnect the water supply line and push a 14" plastic tie up the supply line that is part of the faucet and use needle nose pliers to pull it thru - that got the black rubber out (I had to trim back the big connector part on the end of the plastic tie so it would go thru the line). I would also remove the aerator on the end of the faucet and run the plastic tie up into it and thru to be sure there isn't any gunk in there. I hope this helps you - ti took me a while to figure this out. These tips will help you. All 5 of my faucets work great now but in the future I will replace the cartridges about every 5 years - I got Moen cartridges from Amazon for $15. It is easy to replace them if they aren't stuck.

the instruction omitted a very important note for armatures like me, allen wrench is not a common tool in our tool box and took over an hour of trial and error to figure IT OUT 7/64' SIZE. if you get frustrated from the beginning not going to buy this kind of faucet. Because of calcification the faucet handle dose not come off after removing the screw i had to wrestle with handle.. another challenge for armature plummer like me is Calcification. this is the reason faucet is not turning easily and causes o-ring leak.

+John Saissan Thank you for posting your note - it saved me a lot of frustration. The 3/32 was too small, the 1/8 was too big but my 7/64 would not go in the socket hea so I thought it was also too big. Then I saw your note confirming its a 7/64. So, I gave it a firm push, it went in snugly and I was able to remove the screw. It's a real tight fit for a 7/64 maybe due to calcification. Thanks again!

Did everything perfect didn't take any time, you need to make sure the handle lined up properly with the last piece of the faucet there's a particular way it needs to fit with itself so that it will be sturdy and not moving around and sloppy so take a moment to make sure you understand how that's got to drop into place.

DO NOT BUY THE DANCO CARTRIDGE THAT SAYS "COMPARES TO MOEN 1225" It is NOT Compatible, the Upper Housing is much Different than the Moden 1225. Home Depot Sells DANCO Products, I guess Lowes would too. I had to go to Amazon to Order mine. Am taking the one I bought back to Home Depot. The Danco Product did not have the "Groove" to insert the Clip. If your home has Moden Cartridges, STAY W/THE SAME BRAND . Also, I went ahead and replace all the "O" Rings on the faucet housing, I went to ACE Hardware, and they were very helpful, cost less than $3.00, Home Depot had a poor choice of selection of "O" Rings, Ace Hardware actually took the time to compare the Sizes. Thank You ACE HARDWARE & AMAZON.

@dennisjackson1390
@dennisjackson1390 5 лет назад
This video is helpful, but there is a misleading or false statement at about the 45 second mark. They state that the 'D' washer should be in place prior to the cartridge installation. But if you do that, the cartridge will not go down far enough to allow the re-installation of the retaining clip. So don't install the 'D' washer until after the retaining clip is in place.

Rattletrap2 Single handle faucet moen 1225. wonderful video. i went to home depot pick up one the Original manufacture. costed me $ 14.45. I used the American standard alen key but it did not work. I had to pick up a new metric alen key . It worked well. So perhaps some of you used different kind of alen key. For me Alen metric wrench worked. This is a very good video with closeups. I got the parts from Moen but they were not quite the same as what is in the video, which confused me until I figured it out. After I put the new cartridge in, I had an off-white piece that screwed on to the bottom (not black). and then the white plastic piece. But I also had a black dome shaped piece that had to be put on after screwing in the metal piece with the metal screw. The black dome piece was strange in that it didn't have threads, so it almost feels wrong when it is screwed on. But, it works. Without that black dome piece, the silver piece that was screwed on just before the handle in this video was completely loose on mine. I had to put that black dome piece on first, and then the silver piece just pushed on over top (no threads).

There are a few ways to take out a MOEN Cartridge, there is a tool cost about $170, but I am not a plummer, so I bought the MOEN Cartridge Tool, for about $20, use it as directed, you will still need to pull it out by hand, as the Housing on the Tool is not long enough, but it will take out the Cartridge far enough for you to put a little muscle to it to get out the bottom of the said Cartridge. Before you use the Moen Cartridge Tool you just pull out the Female Screw the top of the original Cartridge either w/plyers or the screw that is on top of the Tool insert it and you can pull it out, once done, then you screw in the Cartridge Tool on top, then hand tighten the bolt at the bottom of the Tool, holding the "T" with your other hand so as not to move. Once tighten, then use a wrench and tighten the Bolt as much as you can, and the Cartridge will come out about 3/4 of the length, when you can not tighten the Tool Bolt any more, then you will have to use a little muscle to remove the bottom of the Cartridge out, the remainder 1/4 use gloves, it's easier that way.....before you put muscle to it, make sure the bolt on the Tool is loose.... then pull it out the old cartridge........Good Luck

Without a tool, all you need is a 2x4 and pry-bar and maybe some vinegar. I tried vinegar for over an hour but still couldn't pull it out. 1) Put the screw back into the cartridge. 2) Put the 2x4 in front of the faucet. 3) Put the screw through the tear-drop shaped hole in the pry-bar. 4) and pry. With some force, it popped out. Was full of white sediment.

After getting the cartridge out, I tried to clean out the brass hole the cartridge fits it, I was not happy with how the brass sides looked; they were scratched. On any other valve assembly, that brass would have needed to be honed, otherwise the seals are going to leak right away... then, quickly, the seals are going to just get eaten up when riding over these scratches. Other than a replacement faucet, is there a way to hone these. I've tried a fine steel wool? Still not good! Maybe the lifetime warranty. extends to the faucet body?

I performed the operation as instructed during a phone conversation with a Moen representative. I did this successfully. I have a model 7700 faucet which is now priced at over a thousand dollars, so yes I have been repairing this faucet since 2006. My problem is not covered by a video that I have found and there are no directions on the paper "directions" that cover my problem for the model 7700. I followed as best I could but faucet does not work as it should. Moen did send me an extraction tool and another cartridge, thankyou. Moen seems to be trying to deflect my requests for help even having me make an appointment a week in advance for a "return call" from Moen that did not happen. We are not able to keep the hot water on as it leaks and I cannot use the handle to correctly turn the water off. I will have to spend at least 4 hours trying to contact them again and probably waste a whole day taking advantage of the "lifetime" warranty on my registered product. I will, at this point again try to contact a Moen representative. Truly wish Moen would have printed detailed instructions for each model faucet. At this point they do not. Instructions cover three faucets and they are very vague instructions with incomplete information.

BTW, for if sprayer leaks, just get a new one and replace the gaskets. Also, the diverter (7300 faucet, it is underneath the sink, not above the plate on the faucet body, sorry!) is probably bad, if you still have a weak spray - sign of a bad diverter. Cheaper to just get a new one. ]\ Turn the supply off. And put a pan under the sink faucet, when the diverter comes off out, so does more residual water.

The problem I have now is the nozzle on my spray hose leaks when I turn the faucet on and when diverting the water from the faucet spout to the sprayer (by pressing the button on the sprayer) the water will come out of the sprayer but also through the spout (at reduced pressure.) Did I do something wrong when I inserted the new cartridge? This is my first DIY project. Is it fixable by replacing the spray hose or will I need to take the cartridge back out and replace it again?

Try grabbing across the screw head with Vise Grip pliers with a strong bite to see if the screw won't break loose. If that still fails, use a 3/16 inch drill bit to drill into the center of the screw head and twist off the head. This saves the handle but destroys the old screw and cartridge, but then you're replacing the cartridge anyway. Replacement screw is 10-24 x 5/8 pan head Phillips drive stainless-304.

I had the same problem just now. What helped me was to use the plastic tool(square head) that's used to seat the new cartridge. What I did was place it on the old on and turned as too loosen it. After a couple of turns, I pulled on the cartridge again and out it came. Trust me, there's nothing in there that it's hitting or holding it other than old grime and build-up. Hope this helps.

Yep, I finally figured that out. I had not bought the part at the time so I didn't have the plastic tool. I was just going to take it out and clean it up since it wasn't that old. Anyway, the plastic tool worked and and so does my faucet. Thanks for the input.

@@kimoclyde THANK YOU for the advice!! My cartridge was stuck fast -- I even crawled up on top of the sink with a pair of vice grips and it still wouldn't budge. Getting that plastic tool around it and a couple turns broke the suction. Though I still had to get on top of it with the grips, it finally came out. 👍👍👍 None of my Moen instructions even mention the use of the plastic tool for either removing or installing the cartridge.

I had the same problem, was stuck down tight moving up only as you describe. I persistwd hardwr each time and when it came out, the bottom o-ring was ripped downward; so, that was what was hanging up...

guessing you got it out by now, but for anybody reading...a cartridge puller is almost a must for a cart that's been in the valve for a long time. about12 bucks, but well worth it.

thanks for the reply and yes I did. Want to know how? Buy standing on top of the sink counter latching onto it with vice grips and yanking up as hard as I could. It was like about a 200 lb dead lift. Want to know why it was this hard? Because the bushing was bound up inside AND NO BODY TOLD ME THIS COULD HAPPEN! AAAAARRRGGH!

@@alan93 LOL Same thing, had to get on top of it with the vice grips. I finally took the advice posted in a thread above and used the plastic tool to turn it few times, that broke the seals that bound up the cartridge. Though I still had to get on top of it with the grips, it finally came out. 👍👍👍 None of my Moen instructions even mention the use of the plastic tool for either removing or installing the cartridge.

Successful replacement. Thank you for this video!

Thanks for this vid, I just replaced the 1225B cartridge of my 10 yr-old kitchen faucet. It's very straight forward. I was taking the time and cleaning the molds and calcium deposits. Then a few twists of the old cartridge with the twisting tool I kept already with me and it pulled out without hesitation. It's only the 1222 possi temp shower cartridge that surely seizes on the housing/valves. I recommend calling a plumber for this types of job though.

Are the 1225 cartridges specific to kitchen units?

The Moen 1225 cartridge is now used on kitchen, lavatory, and non Posi-Temp shower and bath valves.

Can't get the clip back in, any ideas?
@roningram5877

I'm sure you've figured it out in the last 5 months, but I just did this repair and found something that might help next time. When I couldn't get the clip in, I found that the cartridge was not going down far enough, no matter how I tried. I used a flashlight to find that the old o-rings or the larger rubber pieces had disintegrated and bits of rubber were stuck in the "cylinder" that that cartridge goes into. There was a piece that was partly in and partly out of a fill hole. I struggled to get a grip on it to pull it out of the fill hole on the side of the cylinder. Long tweezers and needle nose pliers didn't work for me. I've seen "consumer grade" dental tools at Harbor Freight that might have worked, but I use a length of "bailing wire" bent into a "L" hook at the end to finally get the piece dislodged. I used needle nose pliers to retrieve the rubber pieces. With the cylinder cleared all was good.

Am I the only one who had to pound in the new insert to get it seated?
@ve3cda
@ve3cda 4 года назад
No, you're not. These types of videos (like how to change your brakes) always show a brand new faucet. When you're changing your 10 year old faucet (or your old brakes), be prepared to spend a few hours on getting the job done. Specific to your question about pounding in the new cartridge, the "valve body - as the lady says in this video" has a very slight diameter change about halfway down - to permit the o-ring to better seal. Just as an experiment, remove that o-ring and the cartridge will slide into the valve body without force. If you're patient, you'll get it figured out.

craig4fsu Maybe the d-ring is for a particular handle? The handle I have is already notched and machines like a long, extruded "d-ring", so in that case, wouldnt need it?

DAN PROWSE I ended up calling Moen and they said I wouldn't need it.They did send me some parts for free after talking with them to do both our bath tub faucets.They also sent me a new cap for my kitchen sink faucet.

found your video very good. Problem: when I put everything back together with the new cartridge, the tap does not stay open. It gradually shuts off. It is on the fourth floor of a condo. Not sure if water pressure may be an issue. Thoughts welcome
