I show the steps to replace a Moen 1225 cartridge on a single handle Moen bathroom faucet. Check out more home improvement tips on our weekly podcast itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/f...
Thank you for this video! I just finished doing my very first Moen #1225 cartridge replacement. Although the instructions for the faucet, which was purchased about fifteen years ago, DID come with cartridge replacement details, not ALL of the components came apart so easily and it was important for me to be able to CONFIRM the disassembly procedure, so that I would be able to SAFELY, gently "force" those parts in the RIGHT direction. Thanks, again!🙂
A few days ago my faucet handle started sticking. I had to pull really hard on the handle to turn the water on. The handle was also loose and shook a bit, even though the allen key part was fully tightened. Replacing the cartridge fixed both problems for me, so thank you so much for this video. Some tips: 1) Home Depot gave me a replacement 1225b cartridge for free when I gave them my old one. 2) When I tried to shut off the valves under the sink, the hot water valve was really hard to turn. I ended up using a small wrench to turn the valve. 3) There is a gray round part that screws in and out. It was hard to turn by hand, so I used the 4 little grooves/slots on the side by sliding my needle nose pliers in the grove, then turning the pliers. 4) I removed the old cartridge using a cartridge puller tool that I already had from a previous cartridge replacement job. But I still had to pull very hard to get the cartridge out. Make sure nobody is standing behind you, or you might knock their teeth out when the cartridge comes out! 5) The hardest part of the repair was getting the retention clip back in after inserting the new cartridge. You have to make sure the new cartridge is fully in. The clear plastic part of the cartridge should line up flat with the brass part. I had to put the white square cap on, spread my wrench across it, and push super hard down multiple times to get the cartridge all the way in. I felt like I was gonna break the vanity! 6) I found out from another video that the hole on the cartridge stem should be in 6 oclock position. When I did that, the hot/cold water turned out to be the right way.
Thank you for the tips you shared, they were very helpful. I have a 90s version of the moen bath faucet and I’m still having problems pulling the cartridge out. I did use WD40 but it had not helped. Any suggestions?
This video is a lifesaver for a home repair person to fix this exact Moen faucet. I am a mechanical engineer and without this video I am not sure I could have figured this out and why I looked online because I was struggling. Thank you so much!
Very cool video. I especially like your suggestion to line up the parts in the order you take them out to make it easier to put things back. That is something I figured out when I was 11 years old repairing a wind-up alarm clock that my mother threw in the kitchen trash can. After I fixed it, I claimed it as mine, and put it in my bedroom. 😂
Video addressed my situation precisely. Perfect video. Just the right level of detail. I recall having a frustrating time with this job in the past, but with this video, I achieved two trouble-free replacements in a short amount of time. Thanks for creating and posting this!
Thanks for this excellent video. These tasks usually take forever because something inevitably goes wrong, but this video made everything perfectly straightforward. One little tip: The clip did not go back in easily. Look for a little line on the top of one side. When this was facing up it went in easily. Thanks again!
This video saved me a lot of money instead of calling a plumber and replacing a new faucet. I looked up other videos and able to do everything but I missed the last part. Before putting the handle back in place, the rare end of the metal part has to be put underneath... (at 5:38) Otherwise, it still leaks... Perfectly fixed after all my frustration... Thanks!

Great video, couldn't have done it without you. My first time doing faucet repair. I got stuck for a while thinking the removal tool was meant to actually helped me grip with the plyers to 'pull' the cartridge but I wound up realizing as you showed that you use the tool to 'twist' and later adjust the cartridge, which makes pulling easier and releases the bonds between the rubber and the brass.
Excellent video, including how you zoom in and explain each detail. One important point I missed was skipped was testing the hot/cold before finalizing everything. Mine turned out being reversed so I had to pull and reinstall. Still, I just finished replacing my old Moen 12801 with the 1225. I had a heck of a time getting the old cartridge out--pulling with all my might using channel-lock pliers on the stem wouldn't cut it. Instead of spending another $20 on a puller, however, I opened up my small channel lock pliers and put screwed the top screw through the "channel" where you slide the two jaws closer or further apart. This gave me a very effective "poor man's puller" and I was able to get it right out pulling on the two handles of the pliers. Hope that helps someone.
LOL I did the same thing...WATCH UNTIL THE END PEOPLE....lesson learned 😂😂. Also consider spending the extra 12 dollars on a puller...I got mine out without one but it took multiple pulls using every upper body muscle I had.
Fantastic ! The video I needed . I wish all videos were done this well. Succinct, to the point, brief and pertinent explanations . I can do this . Thank you !
Why the downvotes? This video saved me a TON of time and took me through the steps needed to replace my faucet cartridge. I can't think of a reason why this would be downvoted.
This is great, I’ve been trying to find a video for the exact bath faucet I have ( this particular faucet is discontinued ). Thank you for making this video; very helpful.👍
Just finished doing the cartridge replacement job with first effort success thanks to the excellent video on how to do it. I reviewed it several times to make sure I understood how to do it as described in the clear and concise video. Thanks for the help for the job on a leaking faucet that I have put off repairing for several months because I didn't know how to proceed. Many thanks!!

This video is so well done. I was considering a plumber, but this was well done I decided to give it a try. The video has just the details needed for a successful job. Excellent, concise, explanations. Thank you so much for taking the time to produce this. It really helped me today.
My moen faucet was an earlier model without most of the items but it came apart easily. Did not know what plastic tool was for and this answered my questions. Worked great.
Great video. Helped me fix the leak that was happening. Will be checking the water bill now and see if it saves me some money. Thanks for posting a detailed video. Great job!!!
Thanks for such a helpful video. I don’t know how I would have known about all the little tricks involved without seeing your demonstration. I was able to get the cartridge replaced myself and save the cost of a plumber.
Great video, and lots of helpful tips. My tap was 23 years old and would turn but not come out. I read that pouring some vinegar down and letting it dissolve the calcium would work, but it would take time. My process took two days of patience and more vinegar, but eventually pulled straight out. After this the instructions made the replacement easy. Thanks a lot!
Thank u so much! The itty bitty screw fell off my faucet handle and the handle popped right off. Ur video helped me figure out how to put it back together!
Thanks for the tips, I was ready to take a hammer to the valve when you showed me why the cartridge wasn't coming out. I used a pair of needle nose pliers to make the plastic part move and after shifting the part back and forth the cartridge came out and I was able to go to the store, get the replacement cartridge and fix the shower. Thanks again!
Amazing straightforward instructions. Couldn't have done it without watching ur video. Thank you so much!!! And yes.. the WD40 and the silicone lubricant made a world of a difference even though mine looked pretty clean inside. Adding a little bit made my lever much smoother than before. Thanks again for this incredible video.
This is fantastic. There’s another video similar out there that left off a step. Also, thank you for the clear and concise explanation on switching the water from hot to cold if you accidentally did that in error (like me). Thank you, sir!
Thanks for the excellent information. As a side note, the grey threaded section on our faucet was not removable. It could twist slightly left and right but didn’t twist far enough to remove it. We were able to pull the retaining clamp from the back as well as push it towards the back from the front of the grey part. Once the retaining clamp was removed we were able to pull the cartridge out with our pliers. Then continued to replace the parts according to his video. Hopefully this helps.
@@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel Yes, with all our strength. Also added CLR to try and see if that was the issue. I feel that we have a different moen model than the one you demonstrated as there was no separate white plastic piece, it was one solid grey piece only.
Same here. To get the old cartridge out, I had to push the clip from the two points at the front of the faucet, and it eventually got pushed back enough to expose the hole on the clip; at that point I could grasp it with pliers and pull it out. Then to remove the cartridge I sprayed Blaster to do some penetrating, then grabbed the cartridge brass tip with vise grips, and used a painter’s tool to lever the tips of the vise grips until the cartridge came out enough to pull it by hand. No fun exploring the how to, so passing this along to help the next poor soul who has a similar faucet.
I have to add the same comment about this great video as the previous person - Succinct, to the point, brief and pertinent explanations, with clearly visible activity. Thank you for posting it, great job.

Thank you so much! It took me awhile since I didn’t have that plastic piece you really need to loosen the old cartridge, but in the end it is all fixed. Saved me a call to the plumber!
Thanks for your great video! I have a similar model faucet and following these steps exactly helped me fix the leak! Tip: the official Moen replacement part doesn't come with the removal cap (they want you to buy a $30 tool), but Home Depot sells a third party version that's exactly like what's in this video.
Thanks for the assist and the tips, like the silicone grease; wouldn't have thought of that, or of "out-gassing" the new cartridge while putting it in. Well done.
Extremely informative video, and helped me out greatly. Thanks! One Point: I was quite impressed that you did this without ever turning the water off or on at anytime during this procedure. 🤣
I have watched a few videos and just when I was about to give up, I came across this video. Thank you!!! Watch this video first before you get started and I’m sure you’ll be happy you did.
Thank you so much for this video. It was super Duper helpful. And the cool thing is the hardware store I went to gave me the free parts I didn’t realize that Moen had a lifetime warranty
Thank you! I have these exact faucets and this video was very well done and super helpful. I’m also a mechanical engineer, and your pointers and instructions here are top notch! Without your instructions this would have taken me a lot longer to figure out as I went through it by myself.
excellent video thanks! I did notice numbers on one side of the 2 flats on the brass valve. I kept the same orientation(numbers towards mirror). hot and cold were correct for what that's worth.

Thank you , thank you , thank you …. I was stuck once I got the tap head off as how to remove the white plastic thing…..you saved me $$$$$ Was able to get out the old cartridge and install as new one , even got the hot and cold the first time. Here in Canada Moen are guaranteed for life so I basically just made an exchange . great vide, great channel Cheers Gobear from the great white north
A most excellent video. Many thanks for making it. A couple small things to change/add: 1.) In some cases the drain stopper might not want to stay down and it might slowly creep up. Because of this, it is suggested to cover the drain stopper with an actual towel, not a paper towel. Why? Because paper towel is too lightweight and it is too easily moved by the drain stopper coming up or by an accidental touching. 2.) The new cartridge is likely pre-greased. If the new cartridge is sticky/greasy in the areas around the o-rings, then there is no reason to apply, and it is suggested that you do not apply, any additional grease to the cartridge. 3.) After pushing the new cartridge into place by hand, use the white plastic tool to completely push the cartridge into place. This is probably the most important thing to add to the video. Again, many thanks for making the most excellent video.

I always thought the cartridge only went in one way, but low and behold, it turns when installed and it flips the hot and cold sides. learned that after swapping the supply lines. Lesson learned.
Pro tip: if the white plastic screw mount (as seen in 5:35 of this video in his right index finger) won't go back on top of the rest of the faucet assembly, it's because you need to turn the Moen 1225b cartridge right (or left) 90 degrees - use pliers to move it. This is because both the white plastic screw mount and the Moen 1225b cartridge have two straight edges and two round edges and must align. I was going nuts trying to figure out why it wouldn't sit in properly. I've changed out the cartridge a few times every time I get stuck on this part.
Thanks!! concise easy to understand and can see each part! good idea to this old lady about putting the parts in order as you take them off!! I can do this!

@@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel I had another Moen sink cartridge to replace, fine got it from Moen (lifetime warranty)! so I watched this vid again and it was all completely the same EXCEPT after you take out the big screw and take off the two pieces and get to the gray plastic piece, where you unscrew it and take out, mine was different? I even looked on moen websites exploded parts views and still did not see one like it, it had no threads in it and did not lift out but had slots in front and back so I got two small hex keys and used the flat part to push on the little "feet" of the clip and pushed it back far enough so I got my monkey hook in the hole in the back (I set a hand mirror back there) and pulled it right out then pulled out cartridge like you said! (apparently on this model moen bathroom faucet that gray piece does not come out), then I lined up like you said and pushed new clip through and it snapped in place and then put it all back together and checked the "hot/cold" and it was all good, so beware of different parts!
Excellent step-by-step instructions - esp lining up all the parts in order and testing the clip inserts and hot-cold orientation properly BEFORE getting too far ahead.....those step if missed will frustrate many DIY folks.......... AAA+++ video

Awesome video.. mine had a slightly different apparatus that you had to slide the pin out to remove the top.plastic cover before accessing the cartridge
Saved me a call to the plumber, thanks my guy!! Also you might wanna consider spending the extra 15 bucks on a cartridge puller...I got mine out eventually without one but it took every upper body muscle I had and multiple attempts before it finally came out.
