It’s not a prayer. He is singing a love-story poem from Hafez. He has many songs with instruments in this specific melody, called Bayat-e-Tork. Because his vocals were so strong, he could afford to sing with no instruments. As a reference, his album, called Be Yadeh Aref (In the memory of Aref) is in Bayat-e-Tork as well, but with instruments.

Thanks for your dedcription.the point that made me write this is : it would be better we call it (bayaate zand) instead of ( bayaate tork) which is became common as the name of this mode in Ghaajaar era.

He is reading one of Hafez’s poems which is some kind of mystical one. It’s beyond any religion. It is about “LOVE”. The title "Golame Cheshm" means the servant of (the lovers) eyes.

Thank you for sharing. You are right it holds such a reverence as it is a deep praise full dance of love in the heart. It could feel like a religious song when listened with heart ( not able to also understand the words) but do you agree that is a different tone of religion!? love is a religion to a lover. A religion that never divides it’s about Oneness. Very beautiful poem empowered with his powerful voice. I loved him dearly and will always hold him in my heart. Bless his soul

The lyrics of the song is one of the romantic and mystical poems of Hafez, the great Iranian poet, which Master Shajarian has recited with great beauty and skill. Of course, you are not used to this style of music and you can not understand it. This type of music, which is considered the original Iranian music, is very enjoyable for us. Thank you so much for your reaction. I hope you enjoy the beauty of the master's voice and the sense of beauty that is in his music.🙏🏻

You really are so brave for searching so deep in traditional music of Persia . No doubt even without the lyrics you can close your eye ( when u are not in front of camera 😅 ) and travel in time only by listening . Imagine other ppl who used to listen to Hafiz or Rumi’s poems ages ago . History would never repeat such a great poets again and thanks to master Shajarian he sang so many of them with and without instruments with his divine voice . It’s like surfing . Feeling up and downs of the poem . He was the only one in Iran’s music history who was able to this . We are so blessed for having Homayoun . He reminds me of him . RIP

and here a translation: [1] Mine is an eye ,blood - shedding on account of the eye of that bow eyebrow Full of tumult will become the world on account of that eye ,and of that eyebrow . [2] The slave of the eye I am of that saucy one such that ,in the sweet sleep of intoxication , The adorned rose - bed is her face and the musky canopy ,her eyebrow . [3] Through this grief ,my body became lean and slender like a crescent moon .For ,notwithstanding her musky dark fragrant writing the decorated eyebrow Where is the moon that ,from the arch of sky will dare show its eyebrow [4] The watchers careless unacquainted with my secrets and ,momently ,from that eye and forehead ,ours Are a thousand kinds of message and ,the curtain between them is the eyebrow . [5] To the soul of the corner - sitters ,the beauty of the rose - bed is only a little of his beauty On the border of whose sward ,a saunterer becometh the eyebrow . [6] Notwithstanding such beauty ,again none speaketh of the Hur and the Par Saying : Of this the Hur is like this ,the eye ; and of that the Pari like that ,the eyebrow . [7] Thou ,Kafir of heart ,bindest not the veil of thy tress .I fear That my prayer - arch will turn ,the curve of that heart - ravishing eyebrow . [8] Although ,in possessing fidelity ,Hafiz is the wise bird yet Him ,with the arrow of the glance ,prey made ,the eye of that bow eyebrow . dynamiclexicon.com/hafez/res.php?word=sky%20them&language=eng

this track is one of theme tracks of an Iranian movie called "Delshodegan" (those who have lost their hearts to beloved ones). main charachter of the movie is a singer and in this scene he is singing lonely under an arch.thats why there is no instrument. and master shajarian actually went to a mountain alone and took a tape recorder with him and recorded this peace of Art. as others have mentioned in comments its a love story by Hafez(the most skilled poet who Goethe was influenced by ). its like sonnet in english poetry, best examples are in William Wordsworth and Shakespeare. there is a deep connection between Persian Avaz(this type that you hear in this track) and Persian poetry. You see hafez was a singer himself and was skilled in singing persian Avaz. you might think of understanding persian music as a big uncut precious gem in a hidden cave and the only tool to cut it is Persian language. Now there is one question: do you need this gem or not?

Lyrics are by Hafez (14th Century), The system which the song is sung is called "Bayate Tork" The mode in this system is called "Rooh Ol Arvah", which means " The Spirit of All Spirits" and because of such spiritual tone, you are correctly impressed that it sounds like a prayer (which is not). This is a soundtrack from the Movie " Del Shodegan" 1992 , a movie about the Iranian classical musicians in Ghajar era and their struggle to release their first Record which takes them on a journey to France. All the songs in this movie are sung by Mohammadreza Shajarian and are composed by Maestro "Hossein Alizadeh".

It's a piece of a poem of Hafiz, one of the Iranian poetry pillars, died 630 years ago, a household name who is known for his divine love poetry, conveying mystic messages in poems of fine delicacy, which was performed by Maestro Shajarian in such way that resembles to prayers or hymns. If someone wants to truly savour such level of Iranian classical poetry and music, it requires them to get immersed in the context of divine love... If so, the soul would get the true message of the words and get touched in an undescribable level. That would be one liberating experience.

The mindset in Persian traditional music is quite different from the modern commercial approach to music, where we have five-minute songs with catchy choruses, designed to be easily digested. It's like the difference between a gourmet meal and fast food. "Saz o Avaz" (this form of Persian traditional music with free rhythm and complicated improvised melodies) is supposed to be contemplative, and it's indifferent to listener's instant gratification from cheap tricks.

The lyrics are from Hafiz, the great mystic poet of Persia in 14th century. Indeed to a foreign ear it might sounds like Quran recital or prayer but if I'm not mistaken this tune is in Bayat Turk which is a subcategory of Shur which is one of the most important modals of Persian traditional music.

hello Mr mace the piece of art that you just listened is called Saz o avaz there is an entire philosophy behind it. that philosophy is called ERFAN . it means knowing in word and it's definition is is that someone is trying to totally forget everything about material and materialism and gets out of the world and his body and travels towards his creator which is the one and only Allah.so the main difference between religion and and so called ERFAN is that you you actually fall in pure love with your God and creator and the only reason that you worship it and the only reason that you you leave the world is it you want to meet him just because you love him and and you love the way that your relationship is. it is actually a long and time-consuming matter-of-fact and I just wanted to to give you a little hint about what you just hurt and thank you for you pure and honest reactions

You know! In Persian classic music, the lyric is so important. That's why singers usually sing poetries of great poets in order to give u the great meaning and content. Also, each meaning requires a specific form of music which is called "DASTGAH دستگاه (=system)". for example DASHTI system is for sad mood or mourning. In other words, content and form should match! that's the way to convey your message! Thus, understanding the lyric is almost a "must". cuz classical music wants to give u something and not just feel it!

It is marvellous. Maybe you react to "Zarbi, Bayate Tork" (Che danestam). It is the very last piece of the abum. Mesmerising! And the lyrics are the very same as the "Avaz" by Homayoun Shajarian, but in my mind, I always will hear them with Nazeri's voice and melody :)

This type of music is so deeply related to old culture of iran One have to learn things on what is love in iraninan culture My recommendation is just react to the artistic aspect of his vocal or the instrument Other than that the way iraninan express their love in poetry is amazingly different and deep, specially when they describe the beauty of a lover for example by comparing the beauty and softness of skin to flower and so on When there is a shout in singing it's like when you shout sadly when you can't reach someone or something you want.

This is a piece of vocals called AVAZ /ɒvɒz/ and the poem is from Hafez (a famous ancient persian poet). It was performed by demand of director Ali Hatami in 1992 for his historical romantic drama movie: DELSHODEGAN, for a scene, in that, a singer is falled in love with a turkish princess, who, he can not reach to. It is performed in a frame called BAYAT E TORK. Thank you Mace. Btw, not only this is not from Qur’an, but as a matter of fact it’s part a Ghazal from Hafez, who’s not very popular among religious people! In most of his poems and this one included, Hafez uses very clear signs of love to a female beloved. Some of his fans saying Hafiz uses man-woman love as a metaphor for the love between human kind and the God. Others say there’s no reason to have such a sophisticated interpretation of Hafiz when the words are directly conveying what they supposed to. And this debate has been ongoing for about 700 years now. Just for your information dear Mace; the favorite poet of Shajarian is not Hafez, it is Omar Khayyam.

You shouldn't miss Mohamadreza Shajarian's song which was his last one in Iran because of its lyrics which was against the government so that Islamic Republic didn't let him to do any live performance in Iran after that. Its an extremely epic song for the protests of Green Movement of Iran people. The name of that song is "Shajarian- Zabane Atash" which litteraly means "the language of Fire" sarcastically means "the Gun". the lyrics starts with "Tofangat raa zamin bogzar" which means "Put your gun down".
