FilmRiot Monday Challenge: 30 seconds, cloning, plunger...GO!
With Luke dead (for real this time), Ray decides to clone himself in order to keep the channel going. We can rest assured that the clone will be kind and passive...just like Ray is!!!

This was filmed using a Canon EOS Rebel T3i (600D) DSLR, and put together in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, Adobe After Effects CS5 (cloning and color grading), and Mixcraft for the plunger sound.

Thanks man! It's funny that Film Riot started doing these "Monday Challenges" at the same time we decided to start doing "30 second skits" ... keeps us shooting and hopefully keeps everyone entertained.

Really good! It's good to see some entries like this that don't have many other effects that distract one from the cloning as too many others do (including mine, I'll admit).

Wow, looks like you got a real channel going on, with people knowing you two guys and everything. I'll subscribe to that. :) Nice work with the challenge, great image quality. From the background, I assume this was greenscreen? Of a luma keyer in front of the white? If you actually rotoscoped this, I would be terribly impressed. I especially liked the acting. Very natural, very believable. And the light setup.

Well thanks! When I was shooting it, I was just not gonna have them cross, but I was kind of limited on space. I probably overly complicated it, but I did a combination of "darker" blend mode, luma keying, and rotoscoping. Any one of those was either too much work or had pluses and minuses to it. I still wasn't happy with the edge transfer on the overlap, but other than that, it worked for this.

I lit the with a 40" brolly box (screen right) and a 60" umbrella (screen left), both with dual-head 85W CFLs (1200W equivalent total). They provided enough spill to be kickers for me, so I added a single 85W CFL (400W equivalent) in a parabolic as a fill. My clone was a bit washed out, but live and learn. I shot it with a T3i using the "Faithful" picture style because I like the way it renders colors. I can give more details if you'd like. As far as my acting goes, glad you like it, lol!

Thanks a lot for such detailed info! My lighting equipment is much less professional, and I'm looking to upgrade when I have the money, so it's very good to know what others used and how it looks. The T3i won't be in my budget anytime soon. I have an HD camcorder and am currently happy enough with it. As I said, I subscribed and am excited to see what's coming here. Nice work.

Thanks, back at ya. Right now I am nursing my back from 3 hours of moving rocks and grabbing dirt to pan out :) I almost fell in the river today hehe. That would have been a great video.

Thanks! This one was throwing me fits with the sound (ended up having to make the sound in Mixcraft)...perhaps because Luke wasn't around to bless it. Also, the background wasn't quite as white as I'd hoped. I've ordered a faster lens (lets more light in) and a second brolly box, so hopefully that'll help in the future.

We used Adobe After Effects. We actually used the "Luma Key" effect and some masking, but check out our green screen tutorial for a better way to accomplish this.

We did a green screen clone with our "Stop Hitting Yourself" video, so this time we went for a luma key. I like green screen better, but Luma ain't no punk!

Thanks for subbing! We cut our teeth on an HD camcorder and still use it as a second cam. Check out our lighting video reviews for a couple cheap and effective lighting setups. We'll do some vids on setups using them in the future.
