This is a sentiment I've been discussing a lot with creators behind the scenes. I remember it blew a lot of their minds when I said "What if you create a video that's not about Money?" and they couldn't comprehend the question. I'm part of the problem of today's RU-vid Culture, and it's never felt right. I'm glad that we're on the verge of a huge cultural change
The main goal for most creators is numbers and turns in to money, some will reword it but = the same. A change will happen just question of when, many of the money videos are still doing the main goal if not getting bigger. Many will want things to change but way psychology works money will never go away, might dip but will all ways come back up. Same with music and many other things, just will shift like example trading cards spiked then crashed started coming back now but not as big as use to be. NFTs took that spot. Same with get rich programs look at tai lopez found a new way to sell the same kind of thing that use to sell late night tv. I think all of this should be talked thought about in other ways it any one wants to figure out whats the next change and or shift.
This video was phenomenal! It’s good to see that great creators such as Airrack are getting better and better at storytelling while letting us more room to breathe. It feels like Hayden’s influence might have led creators in the right direction
This is the best video i've seen in a long time. I was invested in the story about streetwear vs fashion, but didn't see how it would all tie up to RU-vid, but you ended up making complete sense and your words really put a birds eye view on the timeline of youtube, past & future. The whole money giveaways and challenges is a cheap shock factor that doesn't last, it feels like we're stuck in a gutter, definitely time for something new.
loved the tie in with kanye, virgil, casey - they're innovators. this video is so necessary to start the rebellion. it accelerates and eases viewers into this trasition while inspiring other creators.
@@AskAW There are people like that. There are even people interested in fighting for an entire life. Of course you can't expect all of them to be like that: some of them are like that but in other fields, some of them aren't. But there are people like that in each and every field, even in this one, so they will find a way. At the end of the day, the world we live in is shaped by people like them.
Excellent video, excelling story telling. I definitely think there is a cultural shift happening on RU-vid & Pop Culture in general. In terms of RU-vid: Ryan Trahan is probably the biggest "Challenge" creator that isn't using money to get views. He is creating realism. Loved your analysis of streetwear & Casey Neistat !
It definitely is possible to compete with them! They might have a lot of money, but honestly their storytelling is as simple as it gets. If you can find a way to tell unique stories and share your voice in a unique style, I think that those thousands of dollars they have over you means nothing.
@@RyanNgFilms could not agree more. I think the most stunningly depressing moment is the clip of Logan Paul being completely unable to imagine what there could be besides orbies in pools (!!!!!!!) Is this really the world view of RU-vid's biggest stars???? That said, I do think a baseline of money is super helpful: so you're not worrying about housing & food, or have a little wiggle room to afford, say, visiting a place. But I think actually the $ beyond that is a detriment to these large creators, not their strength.
This is such a bad take, anyone can hit the upload button . So many irrelevant creators today have tried spending a lot of money and it hasn't helped . I am a random guy from India and have about 8 RU-vid Channels . All of them just being experiments with a budget of ~0$ considering an avg person already has a phone and internet

This is an amazingly well made video! The statement "Money Killed RU-vid" is perfectly accurate. The repetitive challenges and creators doing the same thing over and over, just trying to OUTBUY each other is really difficult to like. The big paradox of this type of content is that the very creators WOULDN'T watch it themselves. Recently I saw a documentary about a drug lord, who said she'd never take her own drug because it's bad for you. I feel like it's exactly the same with many today's creators who make videos that they wouldn't consume themselves. Videos that are materialistic and with no added value. The shift will come soon though. Currently the Internet is in hands of young kids who define what's trending but it can't stay like this for much longer. That is why I am on Facebook, many people hate the platform, but currently it's the only platform where Project Nightfall is consistently able to reach tens of millions of people because the demographic is older and so they appreciate value-driven content more. Man the way you told the story here was immaculate. You expressed exactly how myself and many other full time creators are feeling about the current state of content. Huge props 🔥
I think the future is story. High quality story. That doesn’t even need a huge budget. However the issue is RU-vid does a poor job at promoting “new” content meaning content that is different. Ask any RU-vidr what happens when they try something different on their channel. It almost always falls flat. Why? Existing users don’t know what to expect with this new video so they’re less likely to click on it. This sends a signal to the RU-vid algorithm that maybe the video isn’t as good as normal (even if that’s not the case). But the real problem is the algorithm doesn’t know how/where to place this new content. So what do you do? The only options a RU-vidr has are either bite the bullet and stick to the new content sacrificing views and progress for months or entirely start over with a new channel building up a new audience. Neither is a great option and you can see why most RU-vidrs just end up doing the same old tired content that viewers and the algo readily understand
I remember I saw a youtuber's video once and it wasn't on my recommendations but it was like upload date filter so it was just published. I remember I watched the video and I really liked it and I subbed. However I forgot the name of the person for like I think 2 years and I always thought about their content cause I actually enjoyed it. I had subscribed to about 900 or more channels but one day I tried a bunch of different names and I finally found their channel.
Actually creating new channels instead of pivoting is part of the solution. Trying to convince an audience that got to you for one thing to switch isn't usually a great idea. Sometimes asking some to follow you over is good, but the algorithm really kills your channel if get a bunch if your "friends" to watch your new RU-vid channel for just a few seconds and then back out because it's a subject they don't like
RU-vid was built on creators telling their stories, not giving away millions of dollars every upload. Great breakdown :D the beginning lowkey terrifying tho
The idea here seems to be that money killed RU-vid, so we need to bring it to the next level of moneymaking, taking it totally mainstream, like Hollywood or Luis Vuitton. But we already have NetFlix, Prime, HBO and a dozen other services that post Oscar-worthy videos for us to watch online. I'm not sure why RU-vid ought to become that, too. RU-vid is different. It has its own strengths. It's a community. The content is made by all of us. And there's more informative, helpful guides here than on any other video platform. There are more video essays, critiques, and arguments. And most of the time, I'd rather be here than watching Oscar-winning movies.
RU-vid is statistically and financially bigger than those companies you named. The content is increasing, and if some RU-vid videos could be Oscar worthy they would
"I wonder what an Oscar-winning RU-vid video could look like" Wow, I almost broke out in tears at that part. I think as a long time RU-vid viewer and as a creative person, that resonated with me so much. The possibilities are truly endless.
Im starting to find that youtube is becoming less and less original even in the film making niche where new gear is constantly coming out. 90% of videos are titled 'Why you need...' or 'why you don't need...'. It puts me in the position of thinking i need more than what i already have. Im finding less and less new and more and more same old. Ryan, you have been the opposite. You have brought new ideas to the table and shined the light on ones not spoken enough about. Every-time i log on to youtube I'm just looking to see if you have uploaded.Your style is low quality, grainy and rough but that is what makes it beautiful. It makes me feel like i don't need anything more than what i have apart from a camera and my imagination. You do are so much more than just a you-tuber but you'r a great fucking storyteller. "It puts me in a position of thinking I need more than what I already have" RU-vid doesn't put you in that position, you do; because it's human nature to desire more. If you don't want to feel that way, then take some agency over your thought instead of leaving your mindset up to the bygone titles of RU-vid videos.

Stay fortified & never falter in your dreams, numb the outside influence of others completely. Stay tunnel-vision'd & make use of the tools at your disposal. Man, your content always gets me thinking. Incredibly underrated and extremely inspiring on a creative level. I rarely comment on videos, but I have been watching since the early days and want to thank you for the effort you put into your movies. Keep up this consistency, and I know you will be seeing that long awaited, but very deserved break-through soon.

Incredible video. I feel like Ryan Trahan is one of the people right now that could be considered the Kanye/Virgil of this revolution in the coming years. Authentic, engaging storytelling without a need for massive budget. I hope that is the future.
I love how you tie together other forms of art and their history, fashion/clothes is something that I've only very recently started paying attention to and there's so many things to learn still, all these very different worlds are so magnificently huge and complex in their own ways but finding these similarities and making these connections between them really does help put things into perspective. This was really well put together Ryan! By the way, I wanted to let you know, I really miss videos like "growing up and losing friends" and the "Turkey Diary" and I'm really looking forward to those two styles if you plan on making something like that again in the future :)

As a RU-vidr who’s just starting out this video gives me so much creative motivation and drive. For about 2 years now I’ve been trying to get my page started, but self doubt and the fear of creating something no one will like or watch has been eating at me but when I see and hear RU-vidrs like yourself talking about time for something new it gives me hope and motivation to just create. Screw if I don’t get 100 views or anything I just want to create something different and express my self while doing it. So thank you for making this video ❤️

Loved the video. I think as the top creators become backed by massive teams and businesses, the response by new creators will be to go in a different direction in order to be competitive. If they can’t spend more, they have to be more creative. The top creators are showing what the potential of the platforms are, and I think those same platforms will soon be flooded by new creators who, as you said, will be ready to deviate from the status quo.
I agree with you. When youtubers become as big as TV Channels, there’s a Neistat to change everything, because he isn’t tied to the conventional rules. There’s our gap.

Wonderful as always. A part of me hates that the success story usually ends by being accepted by the very thing that killed the industry. It’s like finally getting the girl who was mean to you in high school. An indication of success to be certain, but still an acknowledgment of the status of the thing you pushed against.
I’m really loving these half video-essay/half discussion videos. Super interesting stuff I probably wouldn’t have otherwise watched a video on connected to something current. It’s a really great formula, can’t wait for the next one!

I feel like a lot of the big RU-vidrs have forgotten why RU-vid is beating Tv in the first place. The intense connection between the creator and their audience. They are too focused on making the best product and in many ways emulating Tv. The next youtube wave will have great optimisaton, ideation but most importantly they will mean something.... And I can't wait.
I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, but could TikTok be considered the next wave of entertainment. I remember when TikTokers first got popular, everybody on RU-vid made fun of them and called their videos low effort and tasteless. Well… a couple of years later and that app has been the most downloaded app for two years in a row now. TikTok is beating RU-vid in downloads now too.
@@penonpaper3132 Next 5 years will be very telling as to which will be the largest platform. No reason they cant co-exist. Tv didn't kill movies, they integrated. I am rooting for long-form though if i have to pick one.
@@aithne1373Same. I believe in the longevity of long form content. I just feel like the way RU-vid is structured right now hinders creativity and innovation. No one is making content they personally believe in. No one taking risks. Everyone is copying each other. Yesterday I found like two MrBeast clones and I threw up. I want to believe that RU-vid is experiencing a dark age rn but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Everyday I struggle to find content, it seems to reinforce my belief that the site has nothing left to offer. Again, I believe in the longevity of long form content. I hardly use TikTok. Aside from all the garbage on the site, I still appreciate the well told narratives that change the way you think or give you a new perspective. Something short form content rarely, if ever, can really achieve.
@@penonpaper3132 look to the niches for innovation currently, some great video essay stuff currently out there. Jidion is also a good example of a comedy channel doing it different. We will see in the next couple years. As a viewer, i wanna see some innovation in gen entertainment. Trahans series was a good start, whose gonna knock it out of the park?
I love the way you draw hiphop, film, and fashion culture parallels with RU-vid, showing how it really can also be a medium for artistic expression as opposed to just mindless sensational content. Music choices were so fire & story telling is on point as always.
That was really well put together and I agree %100 with you. These days I feel like youtube videos have become so repetitive. But I also noticed that some RU-vidrs are starting to incorporate stories into their videos, so that's really interesting to see.
I really dont understand how can someone open your video and not watch it till the end. It's one of the best content I've ever watched on youtube. The algorithm is definitely due for a change into more satisfactory & story telling edits, although I think that clickbait idea married with these two things will ultimately make the perfect RU-vid video.

Great video. Excellent storytelling. While I agree with the sentiment, I am not sure if anything will change. Mainstream media has a new gameshow every year. The Price is Right, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Survivor, etc., have been some of the best selling TV of all time. I miss the old RU-vid. I miss Casey Neistat and the creativity he brought. However, I am not sure if we will ever get it back.
I agree! And both things can exist simultaneously. RU-vid is far more heterogenous than traditional media, meaning that we can have a creator as nuanced and as artistic as Ryan or Casey, and a creator as "mainstream" as Mr. Beast, both succeeding at the same time...one doesn't have to replace the other.

Wow I'm was absolutely blown away by this movie and it's message I'm still in awe of the script the editing and real value in this film I can tell it took a lot of work spectacular work !
Great video the hardest part to achieve this is the platforms being over ran by short form videos… it almost feels like we are forced to make videos with fast cuts and shorter lengths I hope this changes
