I love the way Anna is always honest and careful with Mary. I would love to see a compilation of scenes between them. Their friendship is so precious and genuine. 💕
@@Sunshine-zm1fx I agree. I can't believe how many people watch the show and come away hating Mary. Carson and Anna understood what a treasure she was. :)
she opened her eyes and cursed the marriage! just kidding of course but gee wiz what a way to go. had a baby and then lost a husband/love of her life within hours. :*(
Honestly more than anything I loved how 'human' this TV show is.. everyone from the servants to the aristocrats have their own human flaws and emotions.. this series taught me so much about life
I love Tom and Matthew’s friendship. Tom saves Matthew’s relationship with Mary here, Matthew restores Tom’s dignity by making him his best man, they work together running the estate, Matthew comforts Tom after Sybil’s death, and they excel at playing cricket together. My personal headcanon is that when Tom remarried, he had a son and named him after Matthew.
Matthew and Tom WERE the two best characters. The loss of Matthew was irreplaceable and the series was never quite the same without him. Matthew was the HEART of the show.
Lauren Stich Srry for bombing your phone again BUT I think the show slowly started to die without Matthew. Something was just off about the show without Mary and Matthews romance.
@@jehannethompson1432 No problem at all jehanne thompson! You know I agree with you. I watched the show, and reluctantly enjoyed seasons 4-6, but yes, it's so true, it lost so much without Matthew. I've said it over and over and over again, when Matthew died, the show lost its heart. I know many disagree with me, but it's just how I personally feel.
I think the writers chose that Mary should open her eyes to predict Matthew's death, but also in that moment she needed extra reassurance of Matthew's love and good intentions, which she got. He kept his eyes closed.
I never thought about the "bad luck" part. I rather felt it was a good way of portraying the characters, Matthew being true to his word and Mary cheating just a bit to check on him.
Not really. Technically, if you go back to the original tradition, the *groom* was not supposed to see the bride until the ceremony on the wedding day. In all these matters of male-female relationships, “seeing” the female was always considered more significant than the female seeing the male-for many cultural (possibly traditionally sexist) reasons.
3:32 the way you see Mary's face express that she will do something different than normal, if anyone else asked her to do something she already said no to she would freak out.
He had to die. That’s how they wrote for him to leave the show. He didn’t want to renew his contract. He had other projects. They say so. Watch the interviews.
@@Roshambo920 But neither of them regretted marrying the other. Certainly not from anything we see in the show. It was awful that he died, but Mary was still glad for the time they had together.
Matthew's theme. You first hear Alan Lunn's most beautiful music -- Matthew's theme -- when he is introduced in the middle of the first season when he and his mother get notes from Lord Grantham......
Mary and violet have this sense of entitlement. Anyone with money is obligated to help them. They look down their noses at Cora and Mrs Levinson until they need her bank.

It's "Matthew's Theme" written expressly for him by Alan Lunn. You first hear this theme when Matthew is introduced along with his mother in the middle of Season 1 when he gets a letter from Lord Grantham about being the next heir to Downton Abbey. It's repeated in nearly every scene Matthew appears and is only repeated one other time p-- when Mary visits his grave much later, when she intends to marry Henry. It is one of the most heartwrenching scenes......
Tom was always one of my favorites. He was true to himself and never apologized for it. Did he come off arrogant? Yes, but so did many of the characters. He stayed true to his beliefs, and never gave up on Sybil despite the fact that she was so unsure for so long. He was willing to wait at the house for as long as it took for her to make up her mind. And his growth throughout the series is amazing. This scene with Matthew is so powerful and shows a wonderful brotherhood between the two. This shows how much he cares for Mary and Matthew.
I'm assuming everyone in this comment section is up to speed on DA; But I have to say I was S H O O K E T H after not only did Sybil die but then Matthew too in the SAME SEASON. Like for real so sad :'( Love this show so so much.
Did anyone but me catch that lady Mary actually open her eyes after she kissed Matthew. It was just for a split second after she was done kissing nephew she recalls her eyes quickly but still am I the only one that caught it?
