Modern Nomads (1996): A look at how Mongolia's new capitalism has prompted a nomadic revival.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: ru-vid.com_c...
Synopsis: On the grasslands, it's time to brand the wild ponies. Nomadic farmer, Jamts, is marking out his property. In post-communist Mongolia, nomads are once again permitted to own their own livestock. Inside their traditional ger tent, Jamts' wife, Dorj, prepares the day's fresh milk and cream. With skilful management of their resources, Jamts and Dorj have brought up 13 children. But as Mongolia heads for full blown capitalism, nomads now battle with powerful market forces. Jamts has thrived where many have failed because his enterprising nephew, Mendsaikhan, helps him sell produce in the city. Mendsaikhan takes Jamts' adult daughter, Pagma, back home for a visit. Far away from city nightclubs and medical student life, Pagma falls back into the nomadic routine. Haggling at the market, Mendsaikhan gets a good price for his uncle's sheepskins. Traders like he and Jamts can provide Mongolia's stumbling economy with much needed income. But government advisers believe that the nomadic lifestyle will inevitably collide with economic reform.

great video! steppe nomads fascinate me. especially as an amateur student/researcher of the proto-indo-europeans, who probably lived a similar lifestyle. i like how some people dont need bells and whistles to fulfill their needs, only freedom and self-determination. hail mongolia!

I think it's great Mongolia still exists as a country, and I have tremendous respect for the people that live there, especially the nomads. I thinks it's an awesome way to live and better than the multimillion cities of which Japan has a lot, which I assume you are from. I also think Mongolia has beautiful nature, I'd love to visit it to see the great plains and meet the nomads to learn about their life. I respect all countries, but especially Mongolia.

@distressed7 Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. The people in modern civilization already became slaves of their inventions not only money or debt. There is almost no one can live without money, electricity, transportation/vehicles/, computer, cell phone, medicine etc.. even they can't imagine their life without these things. All these things are already turned into the goal of our life. People are dedicating all the time of their life for working.

Seljuk Turks, a nomadic people from Mongolia, did settle in Byzantian ruled Turkey around 1000 A.D. But that was a long time ago, and the original Turks have long been integrated with the native people of the post Roman lands.

I think it's great that people like this exist. It shows the modern world that there is another way to live. You CAN be happy with just the people around you. I'm jealous of people like this! My culture sit on their ass watching the same stupid TV shows every day while life passes them by... Just because someone is "modern" doesn't mean they are worth more, or better. It just means they have more crap to distract them from being able to appriciate the basics.

We Mongolians have an ancient animosity with the Chinese. We are Altaic, steppe people with completely different culture and language than the Chinese rice growing peasant people. We never got along and that's the way it is. Also i think, Mongolians don't like them because of their sheer number and their close border with us. But nowadays, both sides are trying to maintain a friendly neighborly state on a political basis.

It might be practical to contact the "Horse" people's over here in North America and compare (Environmental Impact) note's concerning developement of tribal land's here and in Central Asia. These are the tribe's Mongol's must visit>>Plain's Cree-Blackfoot Confederacy and theyre Sarcee allie's,and the Lakota Confederacy and the Crow people. That's only a few tribe's from the steppe over here. unfortunately, none of them have republic's yet.

even the old rancher in this video didnt necessarily want to be a rancher...the brain is designed to adapt and train itself for certain environments....which creates a sort of mental comfort in a forced or constant environment that may not neccessarily be desirable...for all we know he would have been a stunt driver if he could have been...but after years of forced nomadic life (by neccessity) he would inevitably gain a distinct comfort as a rancher...because thats what the brain does to survive

(PART ONE) You can be happy and modern, but here's my point. I believe human beings were meant to live much differently. If we look at the human body,basically we were designed to RUN (Not exactally something common in modern society) along with use our brains, obviously. People were designed to solve problems, work together in a group. I feel that "modern" society is overcomming so many problems that it's a problem in itself. I don't need anyone to live, or care about anyone to live.
@ChamorruWarrior
@ChamorruWarrior 12 лет назад
My main problem with modern society is I feel people do not know themself, they try to be who people want them to be, they use computer screens and ipods etc to escape the reality of life and ignore the questions that make us human. Why are we alive? Why is there something instead of nothing? I am a Roman Catholic and sponserd a girl a bit younger than me for her confirmation. I see the same thing in her as many modern teens. When crap gets real in the room, they turn off and turn the iPod on.

You know a lot about Guam, most people have never heard of Guam before... lol My point is not tribes are perfect. My point is that there are large holes in our society, we don't have less problems in our society, we have different ones. One example is money. It's common in our society to HATE your job, you do it for money. But the happy people in our society work for something bigger than money. And what could bring more fulfillment and strong friendships than to work for eachother's survival

It is said that all nations came from Turkey (8 people from Mt. Ararat, all related being a Mother and father, 3 kids and their wives). From there, the 3 families that came from the area of Mt. Ararat spread out into different directions. It is possible that Hungarians and Mongolians came from the same family line. It is also possible that Turks and Mongolians came from the same family line as well. Just an example of the fact that we are all related!! Peace..

I'm Mongolian. I wonder who told the world that American Life Style is what the world wants or doesn't. First the world needs to see what development we are going to? What i know is we, Mongolians, can't continue living in this life, though can't destroy it. We need to find a way to combine high tech development and nomadic style life. To the bottom of reality nature is our source that creates and feeds us. That's how i see it. It's just my thought. Don't live in virtual world. :)

Even with the idea that people do not "know themselves"---As if human beings haven't been playing roles for ages---soldiers, knights, governors, muslims, christians---we are always filling in a role. Nowadays its goth, or punk, or hiphop with many of the ancient roles still in effect...there is no difference other than whats circumstantial. I would say that people know themselves better if anything--they are free from the shackles of suppressed thought---they can mingle with all groups and ideas

@TheZortaw Believe me. I am a Mongolian. The most of Mongolians hate their lives and really worried about the country's economy and the growth and future of their children. There is no way to stay healthy and peaceful in today's world with this kind of lifestyle and most Mongolians agree with me, I think. Because Mongolia is the part of our planet and even they stay in one place, the world moves on and we are so much affected by the others.

Well, first of all Guam had dispersed populations on an isolated island (like you said) with abundent resources----therefore warfare was environmentally uneccessary. And even with that said im still quite sure that the latte period of ancient chamorro has evidence of skillfully crafted weapons and slings (and there are no large game animals to hunt them with) even still ancient Guam was segregated---it had an upperclass (Matua) and a lower class that were rarely in social contact....

@TheZortaw I find it sometimes easier to live like that, too. But I think it is not right to live with no thoughts of tomorrow. It is the lifestyle they had since 10th century and it is pretty much unchanged. Humans are intelligent; we have to change and develop. Staying the same for thousand years is just not right. Mongolia is a good place to spend a vacation, but not to live for lifetime.

If I'm hungry I'll go to the store,thirsty go to sink,bored TV or computer and in the mean time call a girl a slut and say mean things about her on the computer or do drugs/sex/party etc.But people who live in a tribe and fight together to survive have no time for bullshit,they work together and solve problems. Today we create problems for ourself and others

Mongols are last nomadic people on the earth. I think that they have to keep their advantages. Nowadays many modern countries like Japan, USA and European countries are finding a new way to solve their social crisis and weakness. In this case the original Buddhism and modern semi nomadic life style like Mongolian's may open the new way of the right civilization. The main matter is not satisfying directly our desire but let fitting our possibilities to real circumstances.

@Pohjanpoika13 Yeah exactly I just meant that many Anatolian Turks seem to belive that they descend from one lineargroup of central asian stepp nomads who traveld via Turkmenistan in to Anatlolia. And because of the high nationalism in Turkey soom deny that they have connections with Greeks, Armenians, Ancient Anatolians, Balkans, Assyrians and others that intermarried and assimilated into Turkish culture. Instead modern Turks can feel proud of having a culture so varied in origin :)

@kelRapunzel I agree culture means more then ''blood'' how ever I can get slightly anoyed at Anatolian Turks who deny any connection with Greeks, Old Anatolians, Balkans, Assyrians and others and elements from these culture may still be seen. Turks have a large and mixed cultural herritage and if one cares genetic herritage why not feel proud of all of them and not only the Turk herritage ? I mean I would love if a western Turk looked at a Greek ruin and felt my cultural herritage built that.

If I am not running through the forest with a spear counting on you to have my back and me yours and instead we're sitting on our computers our friendship is less. It sounds bad but it's true. Character building and friendship building is shaped from REAL problems that are solved together.Example, friendships made fighting in Iraq are the strongest. We don't have these issues, so we are weak

the modern age can bring health, beauty, knowledge and peace-----but we have perverted it with nuclear weapons and the mass media...etc. Just because Human beings utilize the modern age for corruption---doesnt mean it is corrupt. And no matter how much you want to argue it--historically we have never seen more peace, more universal understanding, more self respect as people---and above all, more happiness. People are free to marry as they choose--find love unhindered..the modern age is beautiful
@TheGreatDeciever55
@TheGreatDeciever55 12 лет назад
(Part 1) Now i want to say first of all that i understand your sentiment----but i think you are looking at this a little too simply---without taking all factors into account...for instance---we obviously know that ancient tribes would murder and savagely beat their own tribal brothers when another would come in contact with their mate...or their FOOD...We know that ancient nomadic tribes had petty sqaubles and a common lack of ethical standards which are inherent in modern society....

"Just because someone is "modern" doesn't mean they are worth more, or better" ---yes but it also doesnt mean theyare worth LESS either...therefore you have to take perception out of the equation and focus on facts..T.V dependence is an unfortunate product of our modern world---but it is not essential to it. Therefore you could still be modern and be happy with just people around you----but you would still have access to better education--medical supplies...tangible progress
