Same here, I thought me and my husband are extremely rare monogamous couple and it’s absurd to feel constantly being judged by other gays in San Francisco

@@atulmishra2384 tbh I find the normalisation of open relationships in the gay community quite upsetting, and often I feel the whole ra ra it’s to support our right not to be ‘traditional’ as an excuse for underlying connection issues and relational issues (many of which have clearly been caused by centuries of oppression and horrific homophobia). But our brothers are having to get loaded or dangerously high just to have sex or connect…the body shaming, the cavalier attitude to STI’s. The fact that our brothers are dying by their own hands at an alarming rate. This is what we need to be talking about, these are the issues we need to solve, together as a community. The whole endless party, no commitment, drug fuelled constant bed hopping is not a healthy lifestyle or dynamic. I look to refreshing role models such as Pete & Chastain Buttigieg, not to the standard media archetypes. We’re from the uk so thus us most certainly not just an American gay thing

Honestly it's a human thing, not a gay or straight thing, it's an evolving process of the group human psyche

@@HaVoKisthebetterSuMmErS well as a strong advocate for monogamy, I recognise it’s not for everyone and I recognise socio-cultural differences exist and in the future new dynamics may become globally prominent, or not. But…it’s crucial to understand how truly high majoritarian open relationships are in the gay commmunity vs heterosexual counterparts. You can argue that straight people cheat a fair amount, but a) gay people not in open relationships cheat quite a lot too and I’d argue the level of cheating + open relationships is monumentally lower in heterosexual vs gay (especially gay men) counterparts. These are societal forces and in my view damaging pressures and forced norms within our community acting on our people.

I am not sure that so many gay couples are open. Many gay couples live very private lives, you here about the open relationships more than you do the monogamous relationships .

And yet by saying "thank you for not normalizing open relationships" you are making a judgment. The only superior relationship is the one that is respectful, fulfilling, supportive and happy. Those qualities are not exclusive to any type of relationship. The shape it takes is irrelevant and all forms should be celebrated and normalized, even if they're not of the type that fits you. Be happy in the relationship you enjoy but don't prevent other types from being as normal or common as yours. Love

If you wrote that, is it because you have something against open relationships besides your personal preferences for your own relationship, no ? If it's completely ok for you that other kinds of relationships exist and none are inferior, why not normalizing them ?

I agree with what you said. I remember seeing a couple celebrating the anniversary of their open relationship and thinking to myself that there was no achievement in that, no self-control or sacrifice of committing to one person.

You're both putting words like "sacrifice", "discipline", "forsake" where they shouldn't be. I don't want my partner to sacrifice or forsake anything that he enjoys or makes him happy. Love requires respect, support and communication. I was mostly in open relationships and it worked. Went through cancer and the absolute support I received could be viewed as sacrifice by some but it was just love, love in practice and concrete actions. The idea that there's a single model fits all is absurd and the judgement of one or the other is stupid. For me, being with someone is being with all that makes him and going forward with him in a 1 + 1 = 3 relationship. (The third being the relationship, as opposed to 1 + 1 = 1 relationships that I've found to be stifling). And I've rarely found worse judgments than from self proclaimed "monogamous" guys feeling superior while at the same time complaining about being judged... Plus, I think "monogamous" really isn't the right word. When I was in an open relationship I was with only one guy, the one I loved. Sex partners were only that, sex partners. They might be friends, they might be acquaintances or they might be one-time guys... But none of them on par with my lover / partner. So I claim it was a 10 year long monogamous, open relationship. Often in stable open relationships, sex is like sports, a hobby or fine dining. You can do it alone, with friends or very intimately with the one you love. Same or similar physical action, whole other sentimental and intimacy dimension. If for you sex is exclusively an intimate / love thing, then so be it, for you. Your relationship shouldn't be judged on that matter, neither mine. The only important things are love, respect, support, communication and what fits BOTH partners. And whatever shape takes a functioning love relationship, it shouldn't be judged, period. Among my friends with the happiest, longest and most stable relationships, 2/3 are of the open type while 1/3 are sexually exclusive. A certain number of them have tried the other type before and they went for what works for them and makes them the happiest. Trial and error are also inherent to relationships. There are relationships that are sexually exclusive for the wrong reasons and open relationships that are for the wrong reasons too. So it's not uptight prudes vs trashy hoes. The only superior type of relationship is the one that works, is truly happy and fulfilling. "How" it gets to that goal is irrelevant and the form it takes is nobody else's business. Anyway, I find that open vs exclusive debate a bit outdated. A strong, stable, loving and fulfilling relationship should be able to sustain many forms along the way without cracking. It should a fort, a stronghold that doesn't require any defense so that the open or sexually exclusive question becomes irrelevant. Voilà, be happy!

Oh and I forgot to mention that among my friends mentioned above there are also straight ones in open relationships. It's NOT a gay exclusive, it's just more common among gays as a general rule. But among deconstructed and modern straight couples it's quite common... (Modern and deconstructed as in they chose the model, wether exclusive or open, by taking what works for them or trial and error and not a preconceived model inherited from societal norms). There's even currently a large trend of polyamorous relationships in the straight world. And that's a whole another world. (In Western Europe at least).

@@chs75 Thank you so much for your kindness. Yes I have sought therapy, though the relationship struggles have been cumulative in my life as a gay man. I will spend the rest of my time giving my energy and love to family and friends. I'm very grateful for everything I have, but I know the damage to my brain is not something I'll be able to live with for many years to come. A lonely life ahead as I feel that most gay men just aren't working on themselves and believe that monogamy is a type of wood.

Not true. My partner and I have been open for 15 years..together for 20!! We love each other. It keeps things interesting and we both love pushing boundaries sexually!!

You can't say that you don't judge people, and then generalize and say open relationships are for people who aren't serious about settling down. 😂 I don't think you know what "not judging" means.
