Great helpful video, I started using monogram a few weeks ago and it is great bit of kit, don’t forget you can also setup each button or knob to a different colour.

@arthurallsopp9344

You can do CC with any Universal MIDI controller. If this was $200 like it should be, it would be worth it. Not at 4 payments of $124 for a controller.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 года назад
Sure you can. I can learn CCs with my novation controller. But the faders suck, the knobs misfire all the time. The controls on this are much better than most keyboard controllers. The build quality is also much better than plastic midi controllers. “Limited” is the last thing I would call these. But to each their own.

@@MusicTechHelpGuy yup....I have some older Palette controllers from this manufacturer and found them to be glitchy....these new monogram modules work beautifully...and if you spend any amount of time 'in the seat' you will not regret the purchase. @7:00 when you assign the 6 rotary knobs to the instrument, will these setting always be true or do you have to do this every time? And when you have multiple instruments set up, can you just switch between one or the other and the settings will stay intact?

I watched the video but maybe being a bit long I missed it .... but is it possible in addition to all these things to set the wheel so that you can use the zoom, and move around the project by pressing the sides of the big button? and set the keys with copy, paste, rec, etc. etc.
@es__music

In Studio One, you can assign your controller to any parameter, and multiple ones, and it will remember your settings forever. Whatever plugin is in focus, that's the control you have. It's amazing! Logic unfortunately doesn't have that, you have to constantly set this up every time.

When a controller knob is assigned, is it only for the specific instance of that instrument. For instance if I assigned a knob for compression threshold, close that window, could I assign that same controller for an EQ band as well? And If I adjusted the eq bandi, would it mess with the threshold setting every time?

Excellent intro. Two questions: 1) Can you use Expressive E's Touche (which I love with strings eg) in combination with Mongram's controller, and if so, why would you possibly want to do that? ; 2) Can you assign the controllers app by app? I.e., can you assign controller functions for Alchemy, Analog Lab, Pigments or other plugins - while still maintaining your core controller assignments - like the ones that you have set up here for yourself in this video? Thanks! Again, great demo.

Great vid as always. Thanks. Can you use multiple profiles within the same Logic Song? For example, if I'm using a software synth on one track and assign midi cc 20- 31 to write automation using profile 1...then switch to another track , load profile 2 cc 102 to 119 to write automation? It seems one could have a huge amount of controllers by just switching profiles using core module buttons.

Yes, I’m fairly certain that is possible as long as the CC assignments are different for each profile. That’s a great point, it’s like switching between 2 or more midi controllers!

It is a MIDI controller. So it's great for controlling software instruments, and writing automation. I wouldn't say that it is a great option if you are looking for a mixing control surface; however, it can be used for writing automation when mixing, because you can pair each knob/fader to a fader or other object in Logic. But it's not a "plug and play" control surface if that's what you're asking?

Yep, you get what you pay for though. I’ve owned at least 5 different $200 or less midi controllers over the last 10 years or so and every single one ends up in the garbage bin because they are cheap plastic and start falling apart after a couple years. I had an 88 key CME that lasted close to 12 years, but cost over $1000 new. Used constantly for live gigs too and was really well built. This monogram unit is the only unit I’ve owned in a while that feels like the build quality is legit. The front plates are aluminum I believe and the build quality is really good. Hi. I bought a Monogram CC but couldn’t integrated with Cubase 11 Pro. This Monogram I need for Kontakt Instruments and Spitfire Libraries to control Expression, Modulation, Vibrato and so on… I set up all CC faders, knobs and buttons. For example: 1 st fader is CC3. 2 nd - CC 11 and 3 rd - CC1. When I open a Kontakt separately without Cubase, all instruments works well with Monogram faders and knobs. But when I enter Cubase, Monogram doesn’t work with Kontakt and Spitfire Instruments. I understand that I didn’t something well in Cubase Studio Setup. Can you take a picture, or write what options need I chose in Generic Remote? I couldn’t choose a correct options in Control name, Device, Channel/Category, Value/Action and Flags. Once again: I need a Monogram CC for Kontakt and Spitfire instruments (Expression, Modulation, Vibrato and so on…). For Track Quick Controls and VST Quick Controls I have a Arturia Keylab 88 and it works great. Thanks,
@MonogramCreativeConsole
@MonogramCreativeConsole 2 года назад
Hey Mamuka, happy to help with this! To send MIDI CCs to Kontakt inside Cubase, you don't need to worry about setting up a Generic Remote. Instead, go to Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup. Make sure the MIDI input for Monogram is active and in all MIDI devices. Then, make sure your instrument tracks are receiving MIDI from all devices and that the channel(s) match your Monogram assignments. You only need to worry about Generic Remote if you're making assignments to the Quick Controls, mixer, or other Cubase features. Check our profile for instructional videos here. Any further snags please let us know at support@monogramcc.com; my colleague Brette will be in touch with help :) - Andy @ Monogram

I would recommend 0-127. Here's why. MIDI CC messages have 128 values that come from data byte values of the MIDI message. so if you go with 1-127, you're actually skipping one value.

Hey, great video! Do you know if there's a way to change the CC labels in Logic? For example, when I'm creating automation for my hardware synth Logic tells me I'm on the 'Timbre' channel. I have to look up which channel Timbre is on (71), to then check my synths manual to find out channel 71 changes Filter 1 Resonance. Creating custom labels would save a bunch of time, do you know if this feature exists?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 года назад
I’ll research this and see if there’s a way to do this. I know you can rename audio I/O, so maybe you can rename CCs as well.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 года назад
So, turns out, you cannot rename the CC's in Logic from what I can tell. The continuous controllers are control change messages which are part of the MIDI language. Even the pre-made assignments are baked into the MIDI language. With software instruments, just about any CC can be used for a general purpose controller, but I tend to avoid the ones with preset names. For hardware synths these are typically hardwired assignments that cannot be changed, hence the pre-naming of the CCs. The good news is that you can use the "Modifier" MIDI FX plugin to re-assign any CC control. So if you want CC1 on your MIDI controller to write automation, but you want to convert that controller over to CC71 it can easily be done with the modifier plugin. But that doesn't really help you with having to search for the particular controls. Best of luck!

@@MusicTechHelpGuy I take your point about the latency (although that’s not a massive issue when mixing), and obviously an iPad isn’t free but hundreds of thousands of music makers have one anyway and, even if you had to buy a basic model, it would be perfectly functional and cost less than most of the individual modules in this hardware. I can see why a music professional like you can justify the expense, but the average amateur in his bedroom……?? There are better things to spend his hard-earned cash on.
