I mean, a character with the expectation and priviledge of belonging to a ruling bloodline who doesn't have any real powers but gets sent to a school for (magically) gifted kids and has to come to terms with the fact that in our post-feudal world she is now effectively the bottom of the pack? It could work as both redeemable antagonist and protagonist given the right focus. For example. Using her as protagonist on this film's plot. Imagine if instead of introducing last minute that the school is crumbling due to a non-monster being in it, (which also means that the villain would've won by doing nothing... great plot!) we are introduced from the start to the school's security system popping off and everyone being on edge about it. So of course this might feed Cleopatra's insecurities, because as a practically normal human she becomes convinced she's at fault as the movie goes on. Which is a way better reason to go for the potion that "my nails retract sometimes". Now about Cleo, let's introduce her as basically a redeemable bully type (like the protagonist from Happy Death Day), but as we spend more time with her it becomes obvious that she's so uptight due to societal pressure and her own insecurity, and we see how some of the other monsters reject her due to her attitudes while others try to break through. Except for the real villain, who at first we see as her "confidant" due to family relations, but as the plot progresses the audience can see he's very much feeding her worse instincts and manipulating her into going after the potion. So let's say close to the end she gives him the potion because he claims to be able to modify it so it's safe, but he just drinks it instead, and shows that he is the human, and therefore she is indeed a monster, she just doesn't have her powers yet because she is the monster equivalent of "developmentally challenged". Combine that plot with a good climax, specially one where she winds up being important in saving the others precisely because the villain thoroughly underestimates her, and wrap it up with a nice message about accepting your personal (medical or otherwise) challenges, say by showing that her parents in the end when they reunite understand she broke under the pressure and try to accept her when she feared they'd be furious. And this could be a pretty decent film... Certainly better than this crap.

Yeah, they ain't. But, their also not Citizen Kane. Atleast this one kept me awake unlike Scaris or Freaky Fusion.

G3 feels extremely watered down. I understand it’s meant for a new generation, hence the brighter colors. But it also comes off as pandering at times.

Also the animated series for g3 feels like it has more character to it and is less soulless making the movie kind of useless. Honestly if you wanna have a good experience with g3 just watch the few clips of the cartoon and stuff we have now before it premieres.

To me the Original Monster High films were some of my favorite kids animated movies ever.

A lot of older movies has good CGi, you're right. The problem isn't the technology, it's that companies don't care anymore, Hollywood is lazy, projects are insanely rushed, and the VFX artists are extremely overworked. This results in the god-awful CGI you seen in modern marvel despite each film having a 10M+ budget. Dr Strange's third eye, the CGI black kid hologram in Thor, every instance of CGi in She-Hulk and Ms.Marvel, etc. It's almost reaching SpyKids or Sharkboy and Lavagirl levels of bad CGi, and those films bad CGi was intentional!

With the 2016 reboot, it cheapened the quality of the dolls, and it changed the lore and the character designs in a way that made them look less edgy and interesting. The 2022 MH reboot is objectively better than the 2016 MH reboot by comparison of the animated shows and the actual doll quality for each generation, though.

Even like 2018 with Avengers Endgame the CGi was good. Now it's like 99% awful. Companies aren't putting in any effort anymore on 99% of projects and it shows. Though there are some good movies/shows that came out recently that had good CGi so at least there's hope. Just little to none from all the big studios.

It's actually making me WANT to get back into Monster High (g1), to remind myself and appreciate how good it should be and was. I watched the webisodes and absolutely love them, but I was never interested in the cg movies because I don't like how they look, but after knowing this live action schlock exists, I think I want to watch them after all 😂
