totally enjoyed watching thus. I haven’t done it for years on a portamento chord (since tape) but I do this a lot with bass line switches. Absolutely use the same approach. Subscribed. 👍🏻.

Thank you so much for such a clear and inspiring tutorial! As I mostly enjoy ipad synths for their innovative UIs, I have stopped using my polys and want to focus only on hardware that offers non digital sounds that cannot be emulated. I have been nervous about trading everything in and getting a Sub37 to take their place in my studio but this has shown me how versatile it can be, as well as a really cool way of approaching recording which leaves loads of control ITB. I stumbled across your channel and will def be subscribing; great job!! :)

Another way of playing chords with mono synths: sampling. Of course the sound will be more static, but once you sampled it, it‘s just less tedious and more spontaneous.

Great video! I have two questions though. Why you don't use duo mode? Also, I'm new to hardware synths. Just got my sub 37 a few weeks ago and I haven't figured a way to record midi from a arp/sequence patch and then modulate/automate it while recording it to audio. Is this even possible? Thanks in advance! Keep up the good content! Just subbed

+Bart Benton Thanks Bart! Duo mode would give me only two voices with one oscillator each. This way I get four voices with 2 oscillators each. Also, if I did this chord progression in duo mode, two voices would share one filter instead of every voice running through a separate filter. As for your other question, I’m not sure if I fully understood it. Do you want to record automation using only the Sub 37 or with a hardware sequencer or DAW?

If you’re a beginner, my best advice is to check the Sub 37 and Live manuals. They contain detailed info on how to set everything up. Enjoy!

Love your videos. But... something bothers me about the description. The Moog Sub 37 is a paraphonic synth and not just monophonic. To those that don't quite get it, most Moog synths, for instance, The Moog Grandmother and Little Phatty, are monophonic -- just one note at a time --- while the Moog Sub 37 is paraphonic -- two notes at a time (although they don't have independent filters like a poly synth). It's used here as a mono synth to explain your technique but some viewers might hear you say that the Sub 37 is monophonic and repeat it as gospel. :) Correct me if I'm wrong....

Can't you just sample one note into keys?

Samuel Choi Yes of course, but as every voice of the chord would be identical in every way except pitch, it would result in a rather flat and static sound. With this technique it can get really dynamic and lively, as you have full control over each voice of every chord.
