More Power + The Best Fuel Economy | Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid First Drive

It turns out that sometimes, being powered by a Prius powertrain is good. Case in point: the new Corolla Cross Hybrid shares its new eAWD hybrid system with the new Prius. Although rated for 42 MPG, we managed to average 50 MPG without trying terribly hard. Highway numbers should fall closer to 40 MPG, but any way you slice it, the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is an interesting alternative to the best-selling Crosstrek. It offers more power and significantly better fuel economy in a more boxy package.

The zero to 60 time for this Corolla Cross hybrid is impressive! Sofyan from Redline Reviews did it in 6.8 seconds! In comparison, TheTopher said it took him almost 13 seconds to do zero to 60 in the 2023 Honda HR-V!

@Steven Strain Even when comparing the non-hybrid options, the Toyota Corolla Cross wins over the Honda HRV. Corolla Cross has 169 hp and 151 lb ft of torque. HRV has 158 hp and 138 lb ft of torque. Furthermore the Corolla Cross has the unique & superior Corolla CVT with a physical first gear that gives you faster acceleration off the line and better reliability. HRV has an old school CVT with no physical first gear.

Been driving a CCH since December, 2,700 miles. Great car but I'm averaging 36.5 MPG, not 42. Second, the fuel tank is only 10.8 gallons. My practical tank is only 8 gallons with a range of 288 miles. That's not very good and I find myself buying gas almost as often as my old Crosstrek. I thought I could get used to this but I was wrong. A 14 gallon tank would have been a home run.

This will just be another great car that Toyota doesn't have on lots and when they do, they will be asking 5K over sticker. None of these new cars really excite me until they are actually available to buy and for MSRP.
@kenhoward3512

Toyota doesn't ask for an additional markup - it's greedy independent dealers who do. You have to find a dealer who sells for MSRP. They're out there.
@braetonwilson4296
@braetonwilson4296 Год назад
@@kenhoward3512 Toyota is partially to blame too for keeping new car production low. Toyota has come together with Ford, GM, Nissan etc. and pledged to keep new car production low. This allows them to keep prices high and save millions of dollars by not having to pay cash rebates and marketing costs. Due to low production, less cars are sent to dealerships which forces dealers to sell these cars at higher prices so that they can still make a profit.

Got the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE with blackout badges and love it!! 40-50 MPG depending on drive. Comfortable, easy to drive, pretty fast, lots of headroom, all the bells and whistles, adaptive cruise control is amazing, breaks are amazing, heated seats, sunroof, blind spot, lift gate, AWD, pretty decent audio, apple CarPlay, navigation, nice seats, and just an amazing small SUV. Traded my 2 year old BMW X1 and never looked back. Happy to be back with Toyota for sure! This is not a family SUV, there’s not a lot of leg room in the second row but for a couple it’s perfect. So much better than the “ever expanding RAV4 “ which keeps getting bigger in size and in price. This is like “mini RAV4 meets mini Highlander”! Finally a small hybrid SUV from Toyota! Not everyone wants, likes or needs a huge SUV!! This is the perfect small SUV!!

I brought home a Nightshade model in Celestine paint last Monday. So far I'm really pleased with it. This is my fourth Toyota hybrid, and IMO its powertrain is the best yet. It will take a long, steep hill near me at 55 MPH without high revs from the engine, something none of my three hybrids before it could do. The fastest I was comfortable driving my 2019 Prius up the same hill was 45 MPH. I'm looking forward to our first long trip with the Cross. Thanks for a great review, Alex.

I've been waiting for this one. I liked the idea behind the original Corolla Cross being lower cost and slightly smaller than a RAV4 (I like driving slightly smaller vehicles in general and am in the market for a practical CUV...), but reading peoples' experiences with the 169 horsepower engine put me off. Hopefully the additional horsepower with the hybrid electric engine/motor makes up for that. The fuel economy is extremely nice, too!
@braetonwilson4296
@braetonwilson4296 Год назад
The 169 horsepower engine is great for the Corolla sedan/hatchback since they're both about 300 pounds lighter than the Corolla Cross. Great review as usual. I would love to see results for these hybrids in more congested/city environments to see what the real world mpg/range would be. I'm older people now and my needs have changed. We currently have a 2016 Outback w/2.5 and CVT when we we working it easily averaged 17 commuting/errands runs but now my wife is lucky she goes more than 6 miles for shopping/errands and of course in hot weather the a/C is full blast giving her around 11mpg typically. On the highway it still easily gets 33mpg but that amount of driving is greatly diminished these days so I want something that would still get big mpg with our use these days and since my Spark EV is awesome it's size is too small for her comfort meanwhile I'm 6' and she's 5'2 and I love it. Anyway, it seems an efficient AWD hybrid may be in our future and since the dealers are soaking folks for a Maverick Hybrid this car seems like a great option. BTW, your review of the Spark EV helped me decide on one and coming up on 4yrs of ownership I'm still very happy with it so your reviews are a great source for my research on vehicles, thanks!

Aside from a lackluster interior, I can't see anything significantly wrong with this, and even the interior is acceptable for a relatively inexpensive car, and would have been premium twenty years ago. If Toyota doesn't sell massive numbers it's because they either aren't making enough or haven't figured out how to market them. Seems like an excellent value and like most new Toyotas, rides quite well. The thing is, can you get one. And if and when you can, will the dealer jack the price way up?
@garthera7819
@garthera7819 Год назад
Sounds like you already know: you can't get one and the price will be very high. Whereas other countries are releasing the more standard "L" line, here we're only getting the higher end "sport" line. You may be best to wait a couple of years until (1) interest rates come back down, (2) supply issues are resolved, and (3) the "L" line is released.

Ive been waiting for this segment to catch up for years now. Im tired of the ever-increasing bloating of whats supposed to be small crossovers and the mpg suffering because of it. If I want a midsize SUV i'll get a damn V6 4Runner and it will be a real functional SUV. And waiting so long to make these crossovers hybrid is baffling. Stop trying to make them what theyre not. I want a modern hybrid sedan-like with extended cargo/liftback. IE a mini station wagon that gets great MPG and good power/nimble carlike handling. IDK why thats so hard to accomplish these days. Finally Toyota showed up to the party.

I would go for the smaller Corolla hatchback if that were the case and you would have a warm hot hatch with AWD and great fuel economy. The Corolla hybrid can't compete with the Civic hybrid.

This will probably be the new best car for Uber Drivers, or anyone really that needs good dailu transportation. The new Prius looks amazing.. but the rear headroom is not good... or the storage. This will fit better for that need, and be more efficient than a Rav4 Hybrid. Oddly I would want one without the AWD.. I have No need for it where I live.. It's an option in the Rav 4, too bad they did not make it an option in this car. Would save some weight and unneeded complication.
