This is a Part 2 from the original. I play the sax at the end (gosh I’m rusty lol).
This is a FULL LENGTH video, a director’s cut, as requested by many of you. It’s long, but FULL of so many cool things and references. If you like Zelda music and Tears of the Kingdom, you’re going to love this video. Thank you guys for such a strong and supportive community. It’s been AMAZING. Enjoy!
Guys, it’s here. Zelda Tears of the Kingdom has released it’s final trailer, and the music is insane. So many themes from Breath of the Wild, Spirit Tracks, A Link to the Past, and many others have been referenced. As a huge Zelda fan and a musician, I can’t help but notice all the little nods they have thrown into this trailer, and the visuals that display as these themes are playing. Each reference evokes a certain mood or draws upon our nostalgia in previous games to create a more powerful and emotional trailer.
I break down some of the themes referenced, chord progressions, vet themes that I don’t think are intentionally included, and I try to briefly draw your attention to each.

I really think it’s supposed to be gibberish, like Twili speak. I think words will be able to be grabbed out of it, because like Midna, there’s likely real words in there somewhere. Midna had real English words and phrases, but none of it was actually part of her dialogue in-game. They chopped up and reversed random stuff for Midna, but she had to actually say things for it to sound like speech. I think the same thing is going on with this “the future” stuff. It’s just the same chopped up kind of dialogue. They had to sing something that sounded like speech, and they chopped it up in such a way that it sounds like it *could* be speech, but isn’t really intended as lyrics.

@@Kvothe3333 Sorry, not sorry. The game has a really lame story and the controls are janky af. One game of all the Zelda game gets to be the worst, and ST is definetely it. Maybe the music is a redeeming factor but I don't really have a recollection of it since I was never able to finish the game.

I can't believe some people didn't know about the 1986 original title song. What I mean by that is that it's so ingrained in my mind, and such an iconic Legend of Zelda song referenced in almost every game... I guess the newest generation didn't grow up with the original games, so their point of reference are more recent games (post 2000), and I'm just old :D

This was an absolute TREAT to watch and analyse alongside. It's bee YEARS since I've used those music tools and scratched that itch and "turned on" the music analysis part of my brain I learned eons ago but haven't used or practiced much (like your sax!). It's been so long I rarely ever notice specific instruments, themes, motifs in music anymore and I always feel so dumb 😂 so this was great to get that bit of my core being going again and stretching the music grey cells (all two of them lol) 😁 you're doing great with these breakdowns and analyses!

The original title screen music in Zelda on NES was kind of a last minute thing Koji Kondo had to compose when they figured out that Ravel's Boléro that they were using for the title screen was still in copyright. So while it's the first thing we heard it was the last song composed, and it almost didn't happen.

in twilight princess, when you enter hyrule castle it states with the king's theme and as your get further in ganon's theme starts to interweave with it until it takes over the whole music at the final boss door.

I personally hear those voices as "Our future" and "Our past", which would make sense with the themes of the game. Well, he does say he's the new King, so that mix of themes could be in relation to that. One of my favourite musical uses in these trailers has to be understanding why Zelda's Lullaby was played on an erhu at the end of the Upheaval trailer.

It's a breath of fresh air. I recently got a music degree from another school where jazz was not seen as particularly important...which was very irritating 😐 I'm a pianist, and love theory and jazz. THIS IS SO COOL! so hyped for this game man 🥶🥶🥶. one thing i might have found is that there are some similarities between little bits of botw’s ‘ruins’ theme (not the life in the ruins trailer - literally just ‘ruins’, the ambience that plays when you’re in a ruins area) and the totk trailer, in the saxophone part and the floaty piano bit at the end. might just be because it’s in the same key or the ruins theme is just quoting other themes that have been used in the totk trailer, but it could be worth a look! your expertise would definitely be able to figure out if there’s anything there. love the content, keep it up ❤️

With the time travel and 8th heroine theories resurfacing, I’m starting to think that this princess Zelda is the Zelda of legend that this series gets its name from. Hey, I got two tings I don't know you covered already or want to cover but check them out: 1. Listening to the E3 2021 *in REVERSE* partially sounds to me like botw main theme. Is there any musical secret or is it just in my head? 2. A really creepy thing: Listen to the very first E3 2019 Trailer also *in Reverse* and I mean carefully! In about the second half starting You will hear a whisper clearly saying "help us, please". And I am not talking about the musical vocals (that could also hide a secret), but about an actual whisper. If you want to find out if you heard it or not you can simply do so by noticing that you will get goosebumps. I generally suggest to give some tracks a reverse listen, they are mostly uploaded on RU-vid. Great Video btw this is just mindblowing...

BROTHER!!! I find this particular part of the trailer in 21:14 in your video familiar. THE REVERSED VOICES IN THE VERY FIRST TRAILER OF TEARS OF THE KINGDOM. The trailer from 2019 to be more specific. i find the notes to be familiar. (edit) I JUST DISCOVERED MORE TO FROM THAT TRAILER!! if you reverse the audio to the 2019 trailer it sounds like the beginning of the totk trailer.

Hey, a bit off topic and unrelated to the final trailer theme, but in the Tears of the Kingdom Main Theme from the first main trailer, the second to last chord (Dm9/F, or Fmaj7 add 6) is actually the same chord used at the beginning of Ocarina of Time's title sequence. Intentional reference? Maybe not because in OoT, it's arpeggiated and voiced exclusively on a piano, and it serves a different function in the TotK theme as the bII chord rather than the I chord. But it is the same chord!

I haven’t seen much of a Wind Waker reference in the music, and this MAY be redundant, but the way it’s playing Ganon’s theme in 23:19 and showing the Blood Moon reminds me of how the overworld is changed in the Wind Waker when the Great Sea is cursed mixed in the Ganon’s theme. I know it’s already been known that it’s Ganon’s theme but the fact they are showing it with the corruption of the overworld gave me Wind Waker vibes 😶

It’s sooo cool. Honestly it’s more likely to be just a harmonic thing where they want to move up a fourth and it’s a “ganon-like” way to do it. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the parallels. All the music is beautiful and interesting.

I think the Age of Calamity theme was a leit motif of the Song of Time too, so if you're right (and me too hopefully), this theme references the Song of Time twice in the first few seconds

So you talk about fusion and wondering if there's a mechanic for that, yes, there is, but also, in Breath of the Wild, there's a mechanic there that's most likely returning in Tears of the Kingdom where the music changes a bit to emphasis whenever you connect an attack, that clip with the bash as you put it might be showing that off

Oh that’s interesting. It reminds me of Wind Waker when you train in that old grandpa dude’s house and the parry attacks influence the music. That was so cutting edge for it’s time. Koji Kondo is amazing.

Am I crazy, or does the first distorted choir cue cut short Ganon's theme? Ganon's theme comes in 6-beat bars, but the last bar only has FIVE beats.

I figured out all of it, they sing "that fucher in our battal of three" there is a vedio that gets rid of the soul d effects and it makes the choir much more clearer

Legiere signature select, there are charts online that compare reed strength based on brand so he can compare to like a vandoran strength 3 or so. Or whatever he uses. I’d recommend getting 3, maybe a 2.75 and a 3 or a 3 and a 3.25 to make sure he gets the right strength. Warning more and directors grew up in a different era and unless they play sax they will think synthetic reeds are awful. So it maybe an uphill battle.

What if, with the inclusion of all these older games themes, it’s teasing that with the whole time travel thing, we’ll actually be playing as those versions link, in each respective game… like literally travel back to retro style games in certain sections. They’d win game of the century.

I think that Temple of Time is most likely what I hear in the part that seems most directly from Spirit Tracks, even though I never could find the remix that is exactly what I swear I heard once 😂 The Age of Calamity motif seems to be a fast, bright version of an older song, too. I'll see if I can remember which one.

On the contrary, I think that the reversed chord progression is quite significant. Yes, there’s all “the future” stuff, but I’ve seen several theory videos (and it’s evident in the trailers) and it seems we’re going to be learning about Hyrule’s origins-going back in time, backwards in Hyrule’s history.

The hyrule castle theme from BotW could have an entire video all to itself. It incorporates the hyrule castle theme, ganons theme, zelda's lullaby, and the original overworld theme.

Disclaimer: I wrote something similar(but not so well thought through) in the "Non Directors Cut" What if the similarities between Ganons theme and Castle/King Hyrule theme symbolize some sort of hidden Truth like that Ganon was the king at some point and/or he overtook Bosphoramus/Bosphoramus was Ganon(in disguise) all along or something else in that category? Also anyone noticing that these voice-like notes/instruments(the "the future" part) only play when Link is on screen? im mean could be just coincidental but I dont think anything in this trailer is non-intentional kekw

Btw i checked the japanese Trailer, the "The Future" part is exactly the same there, if it really had this meaning it probably would be mi-ra-i in jap just because thats future in jap. These voices always give me goosebumps whenever I hear them, they are so greatly used!

I need to practice so I sound better but I’m not opposed to playing my sax. Insaneintherainmusic Carlos does a phenomenal job. And check out Saxology and the Mario Kart lick. Also the 8bitbigband. Amazing.
