I agree. MMA is a 'sport' with rules. "Real" karate is life and death. It's more than just mastery of technique, it's what years of developing an iron body and hands, feet, elbows, and knees as weapons. Notice the one knuckle (Shoken) in this kata. Imagine getting hit with that in the temple or throat ot other vital areas. Curious if Goju ryu uses toe kicks like Uechi ryu does. I know they are considered sister styles by many.

How come when he punches he almost deliberately pulls it back like he's forcing it to and not being relaxed. cuz whenever you punch in a fight you're supposed to immediately retract it without making a huge exaggerated movement out of it. If anybody can explain this to me I'd be happy to hear.

with punches like these they are meant to, from ancient times, kill with it. goju-ryu karate is also a style that fights at extreme close range (elbows and knees are almost always within range from kamai) in such close combat with punces like this pulling back has a negative effect on power/control, and only very minor effect on defence. in goju-ryu offense can be combine with defence with the same hand in succesion, or even at the same time. it takes a lot of getting used to if you're used to other forms of combat, but goju-ryu is a very well developed system, both for physical and psychological learning

Those 3 punches in the opening of this kata were followed by a middle block each, from this angle it seemed like he was pulling it back like forcing it - he wasn't pulling back, he was doing a middle block with dynamic tension - twisting and tightening his forearms. When he was chambering his arm before the punch, he pulled it back slowly, again it was a dynamic tension exercise which would strengthen the muscles in the back and scapular regions, so as to train those muscle groups to supply more power. It's like doing bench-press or push-ups slowly. It's an exercise to prepare your muscles for more performance, it's not meant to mimic a real fight. (Neither is a push-up or sit-up but we do it too as part of our training regime). At the full extent of the punch he tightens all his joints in his legs and arms, he tightens his stomach and back muscles and and his fist - that is called Kime in Karate. In Goju-Ryu's concept of a punch, while it is true that Force = Mass X Acceleration, but the mass you want for this equation is the mass of your whole body (not just of your fist), so if your whole body is tightened as if it were ONE solid mass moving forward, then the force of the whole superstructure is transmitted unto the target via the arms (if your joints are not tightened or stiffened, then as your body moves forward while your fist is in contact with the target, your joints will fold up or bend a little to absorb the impact of the body-mass which is moving forward. By doing what he was doing for this particular kata, he was producing what in Okinawan Karate, is known as Chinkuchi, or inch-power - ie, moving very little to produce a disproportionate amount of striking power, something a rugby player may understand when ramming someone at close quarters with his shoulders, for example. In other katas there are other punches that require you to whip your fist out (such as in Naihanchi of the Shuri-te system) - this is another play of the F=Mass X Acceleration idea, whereby force is maximized by the acceleration of every joint rotating-driving in unison. The fist is moving forward as the arm extends, but that motion is augmented by the rapid twisting of the waist, and the waist is carried forward by the rapid snapping of the supporting legs - so instead of maximising MASS through stiffness, they were trying to maximise acceleration through making all the joints elastic - hence after you strike the target your hand will be bouncing back - of course in competition sports karate they bastardized the concept into making the student immediately retract the punch - because if your punch does not have the bouncing back effect then it's probably not fast enough, so let's make sure we get the points by pulling the fist back purposely so that the judges see the bounce back effect and then they will award you the point - and to make it simple for everybody to understand, it simply was explained as "punch in a relaxed and fast way and retract immediately" without ever explaining why this should be so (it shouldn't be- the retraction should be a natural result of elastic parts of your body structure snapping back after being snapped forward , not a deliberate conscious retraction).. Now how you punch really depends on the target you are striking - if you're striking the head, the later method of maximising acceleration method probably works best for a head-on punch because it creates vibrations that causes concussion. But when you're punching a stiff target such as the torso, the previous method of maximising mass probably works best because the target is unlikely to be concussed by a snapping punch (unless you're aiming at some specific spots). You can observe these different punching methods in boxing too, so it's not unique to Karate. Take Kime for example, in Boxing they call it punch stabilization. I hope this clears things up for you.

@@matthews1082 its dymantic tension to work the arms and shoulders. not everything in kata is for fighting some of it is for developing arm or leg strength and focus(moving meditation).
