Morphing Mahler into "Happy Birthday" /  

One of the best feelings being in an orchestra, is when the whole orchestra recognizes a person as their own.

Some years ago playing in a big band on the band leaders birthday. At the interval I suggested we all play Happy Birthday when he counts in the first number of the second half. I said "we'll play it in Bb". Which means the first note is F, not Bb. All the brass played it starting on Bb. The rhythm and wind played it starting on F. Nobody backed down, so we played the whole thing in fourths! Jazz Big Band Happy Birthday!

Usually when Happy Birthday is sung, it's off key or out of tune but that's ok, because it's the spirit that counts. But to have the amazing Berlin Philharmonic playing it is priceless. Thank you for showing the light-hearted side of classical music and its musicians. What a great orchestra 👍😄
