I give a brief review of my hollow chisel mortiser and mortising jigs on the Spanish cannon hubs. Spokes fit into the hubs with a mortises and tenon joint and the hollow chisel mortiser helps in this operation.

I have watched your videos on the cannon wheel making and I'm addicted! I'm 66 and restore/rebuild motorcycles, black powder firearms and a few modern firearms (repairs). I enjoy working with my hands. I find your videos beyond fascinating. I do a lot of my work with hand tools which I find very relaxing. I wonder how many people, these days, will ever come to realize the satisfaction of the "rhythm" of a good file? :)

Simply incredible skill and work ethic. Had I watched this video first, I wouldn't have asked about the hub mortises on the Borax wagon hubs. Your videos are every bit as educational as they are entertaining. I thought about recommending that you glue a small circular magnet on your indexing pin instead of rubber bands or springs.....but I see clearly just how well the set up works for you and will keep my thoughts to myself;-)

Your creations in the mortising jigs, as well as the flexibility you put into your mortiser, are excellent design & builds. Of course, I guess you can't just run down to the hardware store for a cannon wheel mortisong devise, they seem to have fallen out if favor as of late.

I love the details on the mortising jigs. The evolution... This is fascinating. Like many other carpenters and craftsmen; I've built several jigs with varying degrees of success. With each build you learn how and why to build a better jig, This demonstration allows us a peek into your thought processes, as well as the actual designs. Brilliant. This should be required viewing for Materials Science courses, as well as, Mechanical Engineering.

Thanks again. I always wondered what a hub mortiser really looked like and performed. I remember it was one of the specialized tools I was going to have to acquire. In the old manuals, they have all that wrought iron, but they basically look just like yours. I so look forward to Fridays.

Fascinated how you re-purposed that old shaper... An extremely solid piece of cast to absorb everything your projects will throw at it - and it had the milling table - plus the movable head! Ingenious. I have an older brother that used to make dedicated-purpose machinery out of old turret lathes, engine lathes, milling machines. This was before CNC swept the market. He's build these machines to make a certain part for the automotive industry - gas pedal mounts, stuff like that. He'd go to the used machinery auctions and buy the rusty old things for less than scrap price... :-) Those were the days! lol

Thank you ECS. Manking a jig that works for the work you are doing always gets better the more you use it been there. Using old iron to get the job done nice and adding a feature to make it more useful well done. The information on the jig build shows how the mind works to make things easier for your self, the rubber band works that is all that matters simple idea do not have to cost alot of money. Nice longhorn picture.

Great job on the mortising machine and jigs. Purpose built is always better than commercially built because they are made to do many jobs well, but none perfectly. Also its much more satisfying using the shop made tools and jigs and fixtures. Your a man after my own heart. Thanks for sharing your skills. The younger crowd could learn a great deal from you and keep the art of woodworking going strong. Its a shame you cant teach your skills to a larger group. Skills like yours need to be passed on.

Great video. I've always believed that the process of creating something is as much, if not more satisfying than the completed project. For example a European Cathedral, sure it's impressive, but what did they have to create to make it look that way? No one really appreciates the process as much as they should.
