Today we discuss many of the common reasons as to why most Americans don't like the experience of living in Mexico. Like I have said many times. This life ain't for everyone! Today we go more in depth as to why so many Americans find it so difficult to make the changes necessary to live in Mexico. #Mexico #meridayucatan #livinginmexico

Not being a "caramel frappe and croissant" type of person to start with will probably help me adjust. Street taco and a Pacifico? For me that's a night out! (Not that there's anything wrong with frappes and croissants, I just have this weird thing where if I look at a slice of bread I gain 5 lbs, I have to constantly practice austerity just to maintain a healthy weight)

@@1960317 Mexico is huge and there are places where the prices will be the same and some even more. The small out of the way places will cost less but I am in a tourist location and I don’t want to even associate with the tourists. I don’t have the money they have and it hurts to be treated by the Mexicans as if I am rich and will pay so much more for what should be cheaper. I stay 99 percent of the time out of the tourist areas. Learn Spanish, if I didn’t know Spanish I couldn’t be here among them where life is really great, but it does take getting used to so much that Jose mentioned and more.

This is so true. When I was in Mexico for a scouting trip I rode to the airport with another American. He complained about the city we were in and how he couldnt wait to get home. It's worst when they move into gated communities to isolate themselves from the people into whose country they moved. Somehow reminds me of the gated military bases the U.S. is erecting in so many countries. And it's not only Americans moving to Mexico. I know a lady from a European country who has been staying at least a month every year in Greece for the past 40 years, and somehow managed to never learn a word of Greek. I have picked up both Spanish and Greek and a couple more languages just having conversations with the people and reading books in those languages. The trick is to stay away from people who speak your own language until we are fluent in the new language.

Thanks for making this video and making these points. I lived for several years in MX and now live in another country that attracts people for being "cheap" (Bulgaria). In both places, the unhappy expats are the ones who chose the place simply because it's "cheap." This sets them up for failure, because (1) prices change and (2) they expect to have their home country lifestyle, just cheaper. Of course they don't get their home lifestyle, because they're in a different culture. So they complain about the lack of product X, the roads, the noise... and since they can't accept the local culture, they won't learn the language and they socialize only with other expats. I once stupidly brought a Mexican friend to a big party organized by long-term expats. He was the only Mexican present, except for the two catering staff. No one at the party could talk with him because no one spoke Spanish. When we left (quickly!), he said, "They move here just so they can feel like kings. We're just employees to them, servants." I like to think your videos will help prevent this.

Regarding the noise, I lived in Vietnam for years, it's much noisier there. You have 24 hours of beeping horns, dogs barking, karaoke from people's homes. People don't talk in Vietnam, they scream. It's so you can hear them over the millions of motorbikes. Merida is pretty quiet. The only noise is the traffic which has increased due to the construction on the train line, but after 11pm it's dead quiet. Another point, if people aren't happy in their home country, they come to Mexico and they find it doesn't suit them, don't give up, keep searching. There's so many other countries to choose from. In the last 7 years, I've lived in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Colombia and now Mexico. There's plenty of options for people.

My wife and I did 2 long-term stays in Mexico and other countries (Italy, Spain) and I advise anyone thinking about spending significant time as an expat to FIND THE LOCAL/REGIONAL WAY of doing things. Local cafe vs Starbucks, local food markets (bartering and asking for el pilon) vs. big chain supermarkets, regional cuisine (which is not just tacos, but fresh seafood, bbq, etc.) vs "American" food. This applies for Mexico, Vietnam, Europe, etc..

I love those neighborhoods you like to drive through in your videos. No two houses alike, old and new mixed, beautiful bright colors, and above all, businesses mixed in with homes. "Planning commissions" ruined U.S. and European cities when they decided to force people to build everything alike. Mexico is lucky, at least up to now, to have been able to escape the forced uniformity which insatiable authority is so fond of imposing on people.

I asked for details and he started talking about salad, hamburger, pasta, coffee, cheese and milk. I asked if he had tried any Japanese food and he had no answer for me... No matter where you go in the world - it's always going to be expensive if you to import home along with yourself. Learn to live like a local. That helps with everything from cost to even the more obvious getting along with people.

Please continue to do more of these “real” talk videos! I’ve always loved Mexico (my mom was a Spanish teacher and loved both Mexico and it’s culture). Every time I traveled there it’s been such a relief and feeling of peace. I’ve had to stay away from “expats” because the mentality (in general) has not been the best. I’m now making plans to move to Mexico myself, simply because it’s where I feel most at home these days, even though I’m working on my language competence. Plus, I’ve lived a good length of time in west Africa so, yeah, Mexico will not be a problem for me in that regard. Mexico and her people are a secret gem that needs to be appreciated and approached with respect by those who come to visit or reside. Mindset is key here!

I agree that many Americans are "too soft" to live in Mexico. We visit there frequently. My wife enjoys it too, but complains of stomach problems, despite her special care to avoid them. She speaks no Spanish and requires me to help her get along. I am not fluent, but I do use my translator and actually speak it. I get along fine. My feeling is that unless you make an effort to speak Spanish, you will not really get along in Mexico. I have a "reliable" accent that Spanish speaking people seem to understand. I consider that essential, if you want to live in Mexico. Not to be grammatically perfect, but to actually speak it. In my experience that makes a huge difference. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

I didn’t know much about Mexico when I came here, but I quickly realized that it better suits my lifestyle then the US did. My biggest problem is still learning Spanish, but I love walking to all the little tiendas for most everything and the people have always been very courteous and friendly. I only go to the Supermercado for a couple of things and I never shop at Walmart or Costco. I don’t socialize much with other Americans because I think many have the attitudes you talked about of looking down on Mexico and feeling entitled. I know that people know that I’m a foreigner once I open my mouth, but not from the way I dress (someone once asked me if I was from Spain 🤭) but like you said it’s your attitude that’s important. In Mexico, it is very common for the sidewalks to run right up against the front of your house. It's too easy for someone, like some punk kid , to bust out a window. Public transportation: there are a vast number of bus lines, three train lines and other three monorail lines under construction. 4. Many locals speak English fluently. 5. There are many upscale shopping centers with countless local/international stores and restaurants. 6. Most local people are friendly. Discrimination is rare. 7. There is 911 service. I do not know how effective it is, but some say it has been helpful in many situations. 8. Maybe off topic but an almost 100 story building is under construction. It will be second tallest in the continent, just behind Freedom tower In New York City. 9. Surrounded mountains are breathtaking.

If people expect everything to be like it was in their home country, then they should have never left. Culturally, Colômbia is very similar to México but not as Americanized. No Wal-Mart or Amazon like both Brazil and México have. Living in a Hispanic neighborhood in the USA is nothing like living in a Hispanic country. All countries have their problems, but overall Latin Americans are very warm and friendly. One drawback is many locals will think you're rich. When I was in México 30+ years ago, I was a little overweight and to them being gordo was being rich. Greetings from Texas.

The noise (barking dogs, roosters at all hours, music, street vendors, cars with loudspeakers) is the most off-putting aspect of mexico for the average American pallet. All of this can be alleviated by moving to a gated community outside (far outside in most cases) of town. In my case I live in xochitepec, about 20 miles south of Cuernavaca. Absolutely worth it!

There are lots of frustrations and inconveniences to contend with and if you don't speak Spanish, good luck with that. 5 years in, no regrets but my advantage is that I lived in Latin America for about 20 years, speak fluent Spanish and have Mexican heritage. Our little house is like 900 sqft 3 small bedrooms and a gated parking spot. We actually remodeled the house and it was a nightmare but lucky we got through it made it as comfortable as possible .i live among the locals i eat and shop from local areas once every 2 weeks we put our order online for walmart and sams club and we go pick up . Right now its in the high 90s the moisture in harsh compare to las vegas where there is zero moisture. You can live in a tourist bubble but if you are not bringing in atletas 3k a month don't expect to live a life full of cheap luxuries you are gonna suffer when you get that electric bill the gas prices are close to the same as in the US and so are big store prices.

I like Mexico but moved back home during the pandemic, There wasn't one state that refused to adopt mask mandates nor was there any kind of resistance, protests or questioning of ANY of the nonsense health measures, The level of acquiescence amongst the population was dissappointing especially for a country that was allegedly freedom-minded, It had me walking around in a state of daze, Maybe the counter-information was more easy to come accross in the english speaking world but the level of conformity and lack of counter-movements was incredible and became too much for me, In a globalized world with more centralization of power on the horizon a conformist & excessively obedient population is not the place to be.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels Год назад
The reason that happened is because most of the population does not trust the Government. So when the National Government was forcing compliance the population got scared and did the complete opposite and actually complied. They used reverse psychology on Mexico and it worked. But regardless I lived here the whole time and never was I forced to comply with anything. All I had to do was put on my mask a few times a month to go to certain big chain stores for certain items. I know it wasn't perfect but at least people out here weren't fighting over toilet paper and the compliance was actually their way of not complying. Last 3 years have been very weird to say the least. Thanks again for sharing.

The new law in Florida is terrible. However, mostly white people and South Florida Latinos elected this guy. He also pushed through other bad laws. I'm a white Floridian and couldn't believe he got elected. There was a lot of propaganda especially on Spanish media that the other party was socialist. Many in the Cuban-American, Venezuelan-American, etc communities fell for this. Neither party is socialist but one is racist.
