During covid my white supremacist(literally) stepdad had to work at home and I wouldn't even go downstairs. Fox news was on in one room, and he was listening to Rush on the radio in another room. Thank fuck I finally moved last year, after dealing with that shit for 20 years...

I grew up with conservative parents. My dad loved Rush and constantly had one of his audiobooks playing in the family car tapedeck back when I was in HS. Anyway, I’m a leftist atheist now. I’m sure you’re very surprised. 😆

Ma was the same with Rush on the radio, along with Hannity and another guy whose name escapes me at this moment. Anytime we drove anywhere and it was just me and mom, that's what she put on the radio. Not with dad in the car tho. She called him a closet liberal once. Turns out he reads as liberal / centrist to her because he prefers.... economic and tech bro news. Dad won't shop at Target because the bright colors in the store make him feel emasculated. Agnostic, non binary, married to an ace man who agrees with me on not having kiddos, and giving the finger to wasteful clothing manufacturing every day by locally sourcing yarn for fiberworks from a lil old lady who also welcomes people to just hang out with their projects. My goal is to have a closet entirely of my own hand made clothes. My works last waaay longer than anything factory made.

So far everyone featured here has had at least one thing that's made me see their humanity if I squint hard enough. I can't muster a shred of that for Limbaugh. I hope the worms that are eating him don't get too sick.

I have of PCOS. Before I came out as Trans I was on Birth Control for PCOS. It really helped me with PCOS but also gave me terrible dysphoria. When people need Birth Control, fucking give them Birth Control!
@Flamefire124
@Flamefire124 2 года назад
I remember vividly Rush's birth control takes because I was only a few years younger than the woman on the stage, and had been on birth control for years. It prevented me from vomiting from my period pains. I was a virgin who never dated and it was so much to hear someone dealing with basically the same thing I was being called a slut for it. I was still a liberal then but it was a step on my radicalization journey.
@jospinner1183
@jospinner1183 2 года назад
I'm about the same age as Sandra Fluke, so it hit me pretty hard when Limbaugh providing the slut-shaming talking point to all of his neocon friends. It was even insulting that he called her a "coed," as the woman was an actual lawyer, and not a student. The whole debacle really solidified the knowledge that conservatives consider women to be property, and any woman who pushes back against that narrative and lives her own life is automatically labeled a "slut." Even a request for basic healthcare makes us sluts, apparently. Even more, it was the point where I stopped trying to counter the slut argument with medical information. It didn't matter that some women take hormonal birth control for reasons other than contraceptives. Wanting to avoid pregnancy doesn't make someone an irresponsible slut, despite how conservatives view women. Wanting to have safe sex is a _good_ thing. For most people, sex is a natural part of the human experience and a necessary aspect of romantic relationships. I'm a sex-positive asexual, and have _always_ feel very strongly about the importance of allowing people to have their own sex lives, free of the threat of societal punishment. So what if someone's on birth control to prevent pregnancy? So what if they take the pill so they can practice non-monogamy? Does it really matter whether someone takes the medication to improve PCOS symptoms, or to sleep with a new partner every night? Preventing pregnancy _is_ healthcare!

Same here! My birth control is all that keeps me from debilitating pain every month! Im a virgin (although i consider that sort of thing a pointless social construct)

oooh yay it's Rush! So I was in college in the 90s, which was Rush's rise to prominence and when he had the highest profile -- his shitty TV show was in the 90s, his books were in the 90s, and he was syndicated everywhere. So I got to see his whole arc in real-time, right during his peak. Some notable things! * His show started during the Bush 1 administration, and when Clinton won the 1992 election, he started a segment called 'America Held Hostage', where he counted down the days until the 1996 election. It's hard to overstate how central hatred of the Clintons was to his rise. Clinton-loathing was the centerpiece of his whole agenda, the thing that dictated his priorities at every moment. He's the original pure reactionary, and the Clintons were his nemesis. * He referred to Chelsea Clinton as the 'Clinton family dog', showing awkward candid childhood photos of her back when she was just a young kid. (This is why it was particularly egregious when the right started shrieking their faux outrage about people 'going after' Trump's kids; cruel mockery of the appearance of minor children has been their whole deal since Rush.) * The 'ditto' thing was started by his fans, who would call and reassure Rush that they agreed with him 100% before starting in on whatever hateful rant they called to participate in. Eventually someone came up with the 'clever' idea of just saying 'Rush, I just wanted to tell you: ditto!' which eventually became 'Megadittoes, Rush!'. The name 'dittohead' was self-applied by eager fans who thought that their blind agreement with him was something to be celebrated. * He wrote two books, one titled 'The Way Things Ought To Be' and 'See, I Told You So'. They were as bad as you might imagine. The thing where he would talk about how he was the smartest person ever, and how he could win debates with half his brain tied behind his back? Imagine that but *book length*. * He named his personal broadcasting company 'EIB', for 'The Excellence In Broadcasting Network'. The catchphrase was 'with talent on loan from God'. This barely scratches the surface. He was a monster. The shape of our politics, the road to Trump, was paved by Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich, and of the two, Rush was far more to blame. There was a general acceptance among the 'smart' listeners -- kinda the same thing as the pro wrestling term 'smark' -- that his whole schtick was an act designed to provoke funny reactions from the left, and the 'dittoheads' were the idiots who weren't in on the joke but were useful to spread his message anyway. So in that sense, he's the ultimate godfather of all the irony-poisoned 4chan shitlords for whom the greatest sin is sincerity. He hated anything sincere, anything real, anything meaningful. He had a talent for putting a little sneer into even just saying the name of something or someone he hated, in a way that made it clear that they were worse than contemptible. The whole twisted nasty mess that is our modern right wing media landscape? It's literally, no shit, entirely thanks to Rush Limbaugh. He didn't 'influence' it. It was his life work. It was entirely his creation. (My source: uh, so as part of my fucked up attempt to hide from being a trans woman, i constructed the most awful shitlord masc identity you can possibly imagine, and lived it throughout college and for years afterwards. I was a loud and angry libertarian... and I listened to Rush. I considered myself a 'smart' fan, in on the joke, but you can't listen to that shit ironically for long before you're listening to it sincerely. I absorbed *so much shit* from him, and spent a decade cleaning out the sewage that still pooled in my brain from it, trying to make amends as best I could while making my way to anarchist communism. Ugh, hearing even just that little clip of his voice you played was like... flashing back to what an insufferable smug asswipe I was at age 20.)

It sounds like I'm a little bit younger than you, but I was a teenager in the 90s and remember all the horror that came out of Limbaugh. I'm only a few days older than Chelsea Clinton, and was an amazingly awkward adolescent. Every attack on her from Rush (and his clones) felt like an attack on me, since she reminded me so much of myself at the time. I think that my aversion to pictures of myself dated from this time, and it's probably (at least in part) because of Rush Limbaugh's bullying of a young teenage girl. (Also, it's totally fine that it took you a few years to clear out the brain-sewage. I was a total shit-lib until my early 20s. It also sounds like you're in a better place now and congrats on your transition! 💜)

You forgot the awful "children's historical fiction" series he co-wrote with his sister? I have the entire series boxset in hardcover as a gift from an elderly neighbor, who told us there were "giants living among us" before she moved out of the neighborhood to live in her van. My entire family will remember that line in infamy.

My dad loves Rush Limbaugh so I actually know why he targeted Michael J Fox! It was because Micheal J Fox supported stem cell research for Parkinson's, so it all goes back to anti-abortion nonsense.

Hoooo boi this one is gonna hit close to home. Ma listened to Rush every day from when my episodic memory begins around age 6 till the day he died. And it still took me bellowing at her from the deapths of my soul to get her to hear the hateful shit he spewed his entire life. She told me I wasn't listening, that's when I blew up. I think people in the next county heard that shit. Being able to recite 2 things from memory was apperently enough ( lies about covid and his own immunization status ) for her to retreat from her position. She claimed it was Just Entertainment, I point out the NATIONAL audience and the brash confidence of his delivery. She retreats again, suggesting it may be accidental, *coincidental,* I rebutt with him speaking freely in interviews-- and that's when she realized she'd been lied to. We hugged it out and cried together after all the yelling. Confrontation is unpleasant, but when someone is being a stubborn mule way past the point of harm? Its sometimes the only way to break through and reach resolve.

So I'm back listening and wanted to say re: the fairness doctrine. This desire for fairness in media reporting is still appealed to a lot today, and historically has been taken advantage of. AKA the "both sides"ism of issues that don't have two sides. Most notably this has been the case for climate change, where news outlets were appealed to via fairness to present climate denial. Today you can also see this same appeal over "well we just need to hear what transphobes have to say and give them equal speaking time, we have to be fair and civil and allow for free speech". I think you could argue the fairness doctrine was a good thing, too, but it's certainly not as simple as misinformation proliferated because the fairness doctrine was repealed. Especially because you could easily change the fairness doctrine from presenting the controversy to some kind of policy for broadcasting/news/etc to needing to at the very least cite sources for substantive claims (eg claims about reality), and possibly some kind of guidelines about sources themselves (eg, the source has to actually say what you said it did, and possibly that it also needs to present some kind of evidence for its claims). But the fairness doctrine has been abused, and still is in terms of appealing to journalistic integrity. I would highly recommend the book Merchants of Doubt, as it discusses taking advantage of this journalistic policy and/or appeal. Edit: Now that I'm further into the episode and there's a quote from him on 2nd hand smoke, smoking and later 2nd hand smoke are both directly addressed in Merchants of Doubt, as is climate change and other environmental issues that a handful of actors sowed doubts about in the public via media. Some they were able to do blatantly with the repeal of the fairness doctrine, sure, but some more "mainstream" or "balanced" news sources also ended up giving a platform to this misinformation because of the appeal to the fairness doctrine and presenting "the controversy". And many weren't scientifically literate enough or science reporters to understand how much of a consensus there really was. As I said we're seeing something similar play out with trans people and trans healthcare. There is no scientific or medical controversy there, only a political one.

Birth control as a contraceptive is healthcare as well. I honestly hate the way people split it up like the reason you take it is a moral judgment. If I ever got pregnant, I would be s*icidal. It could also be high risk for me. Birth control is healthcare regardless of what you need it for! ❤
