This video shows you how to install a MotorGuide Xi3 trolling motor on a kayak. This installation upgrades your ability to fish more efficiently by utilizing the many features including anchor mode (aka Spot Lock). One of the biggest hurdles to fishing from a kayak is keeping the kayak still on windy days. You can find yourself putting more time into keeping the kayak in place than actually fishing your baits. This motor is a great solution for this. This video not only shows you how to install a trolling motor onto a kayak but also shows you the mount that's needed as well as the quick release bracket to make removing the trolling motor a breeze. This particular mount is fabricated to be an exact fit for the already existing screw locations on the Vibe Shearwater 125 fishing kayak. Lastly, we DIY a pulley system to help you deploy and stow the motor from your seat. This hack is probably one of the highlights of the video that people will find most valuable. About time somebody made a trolling motor with spot lock and all the good stuff for a kayak! Awesome. Great vid. BTW I have cut many a trolling motor shafts in my day. Luckily no warranty issues.

That connect is for the motorguide pinpoint gps gate kit. It for connect to a lowrance unit. Opens up a couple extra features thru the ff. You would need to add a nmea network to use it.

I think you’ll need an M8 x 1.25 eye bolt. I’m having trouble finding one in local hardware stores, but you can find them online.

It's good for a full day out on the water with fishing. Rule of thumb, most single lithium batteries will last only 1 - 1-1/2 running at full speed. So vary your speed for a full day of power

Yall added a eyelet. When the mount had one for that Exact reason. Didn't really get the reason for drilling those hole in the back to run the wires. But not my kayak.

When you dismount the trolling motor what are you doing with the pedal release rope? Do you have to untie the knot on the pedal each time?

"There are two other carabiners between the foot pedal and the handle that are hooked into each other. I just unclip the two carabiners and fish the rope that is connected to the foot pedal through the eyelet on the bow mount. Hope that helps."

Did yall add a circuit breaker between batt and motor? Im trying to figure out if a 50 or 60amp breaker should be sed. Any ideas?

Yes 60amp breaker. That's pretty standard for trolling motor 55lb or higher.

I want to do this but the front of my kayak has a very unique design. The premanufactured mounts don't look like they would fit, I am going to have to fabricate something of my own. The motor itself is about 40 pounds right, does that much weight right on the nose affect handling much? I fish salt water and it can get choppy, I am leery about having the bow too low.

One objective makes mounting plates for several different kayaks. I would start there. You do need to counterbalance the weight of the motor. Most people do that by placing the battery at or near the stern.

Try a M8 x 1.25 eye bolt. You’ll probably have to find it online. The hardware stores where I live only have SAE eye bolts and you’ll need a metric eye bolt. I took the garmin mount to Home Depot and figured out the knob bolt is an M8 with 1.25 thread.

I used the same bracket on my Xi3 install for my PA14. The only thing I did was include small plastic washers so I could tighten all the srews and still allow it to spin freely.

Does your xi3 retrieve line get wrapped around your shaft?

When spot lock is activated the motor spins to a point and then automatically reverses because it has turned to the point where it higher turn radius in case it needs to correct in the opposite direction. Therefore it doesn't wind up the deploy/ retrieve cord or the motor coil itself.

Why didn't you just use something like mechanics wire and just run and fish the wire from the front to the same location that you drilled next to the battery rather than go all the way to the rear and then double back above the deck to the battery location with the wiring?

The stow bracket does not cause the rope to wrap around the shaft.

The motor won't allow it to wrap. It has a feature that will allow the motor to spin up to 180% then automatically spin around to the opposite 180% if that makes sense.
