My DuoMid XL arrived this June and tested it the first time on the Traversée du Massiv Vosgien (TMV). Right the very first night it proofed to be sturdy enough for a heavy thunderstorm with serious downpours and strong winds. Of course the waterproofness depends on how meticulous you do the seam sealing. As it was in the midst of summer I left the doors open on the following dry and hot nights. Used it together with the inner to keep the insects at bay for a undisturbed sleep. The DuoMid XL is marketed as a two-person tent, but I use it as a super spacious dwelling for my solo trips and don’t mind the little extra weight.

Have been using the Dumoid in DCF for many years and is the tent I always go back to, and have tried loads. Currently starting out in the world of Bikepacking myself and just putting my kit together. It is interesting trying to get all my trusted and tested hiking and backpacking gaer to fit on my bike though.

Heading out soon with a myog mid tent I've been testing. Made it out of a silpoly tarp. Very easy to set up and very lightweight. Being new at sewing, I can say yours looks very very nice but the one I have will do the job nicely too!

Do you know what the bikepacking market is missing? Tents designed to use a bicycle frame instead of poles. There are definitely too few such projects. And the idea has huge potential because it solves several problems at once. You save weight, the structure is thousands of times stronger, it prevents your bike from being stolen while you sleep, and depending on the design, you can have much more spacious interior and even access to your bike and bags without leaving the tent... So far, the only comprehensive approach to this topic that I have seen is individual, custom-made projects.

I can think of a lot of tent designs that could work, but all of them commercially bog down over 4 facts: 1: The weight would be higher than regular tents. 2: The set up would be complicated. 3: The price high and sales potential low. 4: Few would want to disassemble the bike overnight ot use wheels as parts of the tent. I note that you can take a single bike into a SuperMid with no inner net or with a solo inner net. Perhaps someone with more imagination than me could solve for those 4 points above in a fully enclosed bikepacking tent.

@@mountainlaureldesigns9382 who is talking about disasembling bikes? Look, when i biked with partner we would just turn bikes up side down and stretch tarp over them. With few modification, sewing and glueing, we had spacious, free standing, and closed from three sides shelter, for us and bikes. Sure, you can get lighter traditional two person tent, but two person+two bikes, and this big and comfy? No fckn way 😏

And the older you get, the thicker your sleeping pad becomes. 30 years ago I got by with one inch. I'm now at 4 inches. The 4-inch-thick 2023 pad weighs less than half as much as the 1-inch-thick one from the 1990s.

Have you considered reviewing the Durston Gear X-Mid 2P? A lot of the concerns that you had with this MLD DuoMid XL do not seem to be there with the X-Mid. And the price is significantly more affordable.

for many years I have used a blk diamond mini mid / with a bivy sac for cooler or wetter weather. the only improvement I'd see with this duo mid would be a vent. two people in a mid creat a lot of condensation. I hand an inexpensive Coglan rectangular bug net at times.

I used a budget Lanshan 1P tent on a recent dirt tour. It fit on my fork leg and the pole in my bike bag. It has the same basic structure as this. It did ok in the wind and rain, although the rain fly does sag a bit when wet. I can live with these compromises at less than 1/3 the price

Way too expensive. I got a luxe hexpeak. Its similar, but I think sil nylon. One big plus on these kind of tents is, that you can pitch them in pouring rain and still manage to have a dry inner tent afterwards.
