03:27 Open Mouth/Low Tongue:
04:46 Issues with an Open Mouth: Our noses are meant to moisten, warm and clean air. Nitric oxide helps with the microbiome within our noses. Mouth breathing lowers nitric oxide levels. When we breathe through our mouths, we bypass these benefits. Chronic mouth breathing is a cause of sleep apnea. If you are mouth breathing during the day, you will be mouth breathing during the night. That leads to snoring. Snoring leads to upper airway resistance syndrome. It is a precursor to sleep apnea

Ive been a mouth breather since I was a child. Every picture I have seen of myself as a youngster Ive noticed my mouth is open. I have gotten two septoplasty surgeries and I can breath better during day while I am standing; however, I when I lay down my nose becomes blocked off. I have recorded myself while sleeping noticed that I breath through my mouth the entire night. I wake up feeling extremely tired, brain foggy, and just unable to perform optimally in life.

wOw great interview. I personally am one of the people who needed this info most of my life. She went over all the problems I had as a child eating! Especially having to hold my breath while eating!!!! As a teenager had my adenoids removed plus a partial tonsillectomy. That just got rid of the constant pressure and the chocking feeling when laying down. I also had braces with a palate expander for about 5 years in my early 20s! It really changed the structure of my face in a good way. I also needed 3 different sessions using radiofrequency oblations to reduce the size of my turbinates. Eventually I had to have a deviated septum corrections where they also further removed more of my inner turerbinates. Finally now I am learning how to breathe through my nose and learning about the correct posture for my tongue and lips.

Hey ! I haven't watched it all, but my comment is rather about my experience with nose breathing as much as possible for a year when coming into into this video. I think I got very lucky as a kid because I noticed that mouth breathing felt off. I would still mouth breathe when doing "exercise" and, lookind back, quite a few times during sleep, but I got into the habit of breathing through my nose most of the time. And sure enough, even with a lot of soft foods, I've only had one wisdom teeth removed because it got a cavity, while they all partially, but safely grew out and never bothered me. And I feel lucky I didn't have to have all four removed and go through a week of debilitating recovery state. I learned about breathing really about a year ago from Patrick McKeown and it was eye-opening. I set to breathe through my nose as much as possible, mouth taping at night, and so far, one year later, I've only had my nose fully blocked once because of a creepy allergy I didn't know I had (nutritional yeast) that was quite severe. I definetely sleep better with my mouth shut, and I've strengthened my diaphragm as well as learned to use it. Nose breathing during exercise is quite easy for me (except for very high intensity exercise, especially running since I'm a big, not so efficient runner), and oftentimes when lifting weights I don't feel any more of a need to breathe than during rest. What has been interesting to notice is that, soon after discovering breathwork, I could reliably hold my breath for up to 3:30 to 4 minutes, but now, I can't go much beyond two minutes even though my CO2 tolerance has improved. Well, obviously I haven't done many breath holds in the past months, but I am guessing that, in fact, it is my baseline CO2 production that has increased thanks to the Bohr effect (thanks nose-breathing !). Well, that sums up what I had on my mind :) Have a kind day !

I think you should star using mouthtaping. It is effective. I have been using this method for almost a year and my sleep improved significantly. In the morning I wake up rested. Moreover, it is cheap.

This was fantastic to listen to! As a mother who has MTHFR I have two children who were born with tongue/lip ties. A third child has the tongue thrusting issue and prolonged finger sucking. His teeth and jaw have moved and we are about to embark on a mayobrace/traditional braces journey with him. There have been so many small effects though of him not being able to breath through his nose- from the messy eating you mentioned to not being able to blow his nose. Thank you for sharing this!

Dr. Mew and orthotropics is on point with their workand findings.. They say lips together, tongue on the palate and teeth in or near contact. Soft food, maxilla and mandibule growth. Importance of forward growth rather dan vertical growth.. You should interview the MEW orthodontists.

I'm trying to breathe trough my nose, but it's often impossible, nasal constriction apparently (it also happen if I do yoga with feet up). So the only solution is surgery to enlarge the airway ? It's crazy because I was told about airway surgery by a schoolmate at high school - in passing - and I forgot about that for 20 years... but none of the several doctors I consulted before and after, about breathing or dental problems, ever talked about that !!! Same about this bad tongue position/open mouth breathing, only heard about this when I was 40, on the internet ! Worse, my tongue has an asymmetrical position, and my right teeth are some millimeters more forward, too. In fact my whole body is stronger on the right side, but it's not immediately obvious for most people. Maybe linked to a light Marfan syndrom, which causes a high mouth top, that doesn't help, as I have an hard time keeping my tongue up against the palate, except for the tip. I find it weird you need to spend time on the internet, to learn things like that BY CHANCE... I also learned about my Marfan while browsing Yahoo comments, can you imagine that ? Someone asked if Phelps was Marfan, I didn't know what Marfan was, and voila ! I recently talked to a new doctor about Marfan, and despite I have most symptoms, he refused to investigate this further, saying being skinny is healthy ! I had to ask to see a cardiologist myself... happily enough my aorta seems not too dilated, although I have regular chest pain, maybe those long ribs...

I know this comment is super old, but maybe others can learn from it. Instead of surgery to expand the palate, many people are finding success with myofunctional therapy and an ALF appliance. This is a more natural approach than traditional braces or surgery.
@emilya704
@emilya704 7 лет назад
Thanks for the very informative video! Mike, do you happen know if the ALF appliance is a good idea for adults, or just children/adolescents? I'm 34 and just diagnosed with a very arched palate and narrow airway... i wasn't aware of any of this before, but have had some breathing problems and sleep problems. I've heard some concerns about using the appliance in adults since bones are fused as opposed to in childhood. Any feedback or resources would be greatly appreciated!
@484reeree
@484reeree 5 лет назад
Adults can certainly benefit from the ALF appliance, it just takes a little longer then with children. I am having tongue tie surgery soon, and an ALF appliance will be placed soon after that. Super excited, because I can already see changes with just doing several weeks of myofunctional therapy so far! Google Dr. John and Mike Mew.

Hmm. First of all I breath through my mouth during the day, always have. I have sleep apnea and now I now require a CPAP machine. Secondly, the mask I use goes over only my nose but that does not guarantee less leakage. It still does leak, after all it is a soft silicone that can easily be shifted by movement which re accommodates the mask, especially if you are a side sleeper. Thirdly, in the event ones mouth opens while wearing the properly fitted nose only mask, the forced air dries out the mouth (path of least resistance) until one wakes and shuts the mouth to re-establish the seal and re moisturize the mouth. If that is a problem - open mouth sleeping, then one will need to add a tie to keep the mouth closed (circling from under the jaw over the head).

Don't forget pacifiers and bottle feeding, both of these modern practices lead to incorrect tongue position and mouth breathing.
@qthirteen13

so called modern😒 pacifiers need to be replaced with marrow filled bones, nutritious and mouth forming at the same time 😉🤓 'Wilma !!! Stick a bone in Bam Bam's mouth would ya? I'm trying to watch the Dinosaur Game through the cave opening!!!'
@thecpapgentleman9442
@thecpapgentleman9442 8 лет назад
Nose breathing will most definitely make the use of CPAP therapy much easier. Smaller, lighter-weight masks that just go over or in the nose! Not to mention, less likelihood of mask leakage. It's also worthy noting that when you wear masks that cover the mouth and sit on the mandible, this pushes the jaw backwards creating more of an obstruction to breathing.

Any tips for vocalists? I was taught to breathe through my mouth when singing, is this a problem?
@therespectedlex9794
@therespectedlex9794 7 лет назад
No, if you can sing, and I can too, then you're within a minority of talented individuals. They on the other hand probably can't. There's nothing a non-singer can teach a singer about using their larynx for God sake. By comparison they're psycho-linguistically crippled. What they're talking about are physical defects, like prognathism, that have very little to do with breathing.
@ilfautdanser9121

yeah, cuz singing is pure fucking genius. turns out anyone who can talk can sing. you may do it better than many of us, but maybe ease up on the arrogance.
