80s miniseries? you mean Roots? I have to agree, McQueen is a depressing director. He would probably say he tackles subjects which are important to him and life is a tragedy. We all die in the end.

This was why there had to be a war, because free labour was under threat in the north as long as slavery was legal elsewhere in the USA. Not only because free black people could be kidnapped and trafficked south like in this case, but because southern lawyers and slave catchers were working through northern courts to be able to claim former slaves who had successfully fled north as lost property of their former owners. They were starting to win their cases, and they were getting up to state and the federal supreme court, and then it would ony have been another supreme court win to make private property in human beings the law everywhere. The idea of some states being free and some being slave states was not legally sustainable forever. Sooner or later it was going to be all slave, or all free. And there was nothing requiring that slavery was restricted to black people. Eventually it could have been anyone poor of any race, because it's ownership of humans. So there had to be a war.
He's not interpreting the words to "justify" slavery, that's their purpose. Many verses in the Bible condone and regulate slavery. For example : Ephesians 6:5-8 Paul states, “Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ” which is Paul instructing slaves to obey their master. Similar statements regarding obedient slaves can be found in Colossians 3:22-24, 1 Timothy 6:1-2, and Titus 2:9-10. You have no idea what religions are about. You need to educate yourself on the subject. These are man made tools of control. They are racist, sexist and homophobic...
None of the religions are about hurt and pain? You should ask all the gays who are being murdered in islamic countries what they think about that religion.
