Regarding the difficulties of driving modern vs antique machinery, a number of things should be considered. Today's drivers are not only required to drive on the limit but still have enough spare capacity to manage the various systems. Another key difference is the pirelli rubber which is notoriously difficult and sensitive. Then there's the aero-dynamics which is more sophisticated and sensitive than ever before. Current cars are undoubtedly far more difficult to driver than ever before. Added to the fact that the grid is more professional, well trained, and more talented than ever. Then there's the traveling, media, sponsors and in lewis's case extracurricular activities. All these sap mental/physical energies - distract from the driving and doesn't allow the freedom to let lose without social media exploding. One can only imagine what the like's of Clark, Hill, Stewart, Senna and co got up to before twitter/IG/Facebook became a thing. Lets not forget the daily media cycle. The questions about form, contracts, rivalries or an innocuous racing incident. Everything is blown up, everything is dissected, everything is microscopically analysed. Hard to know if driving an H-pattern, inferior braking, death machine is harder than a sophisticated modern downforce monster but what is for certain is the circus has grown to monstrous levels requiring much more from the driver.

F1 has to be as challenging as ever now for 1 simple reason: the top drivers are always trying their best and it's your opponents you're racing, so the quality of opposition is what's important and the lower formulas now give more opportunities than ever before to get into F1, ergo the average quality is higher so the competition is harder. The imbalance of cars over the last few years balances that a bit but it's not like in any previous era all the cars were equal either.

He is a legend in my book already. Very clean driving very few unforced errors. Of course you can’t be flawless. The Mercedes team has a really long dominant run. It is going to be very difficult to beat them this season. I am not looking for a walkover. Just a clean and fair fight. And I think that is how Toto wants it too. It fits the Mercedes reputation. Really looking forward to this season. He is not only racing the 2020 field he is also racing Michael Schumacher. Talk about legendary drivers.

The differences in the cars and the rules over the years make comparing drivers difficult. When teams had unlimited fuel and tires there was much less for a driver to manage. They just drove every lap as hard as possible. With limited tires, having to use 2 different tire compounds, having to start on the Q2 tires and no fueling during the race, the driver has to manage things much more carefully. Lewis is able to drive so steadily without ruining his tires or crashing the car. It makes him a great driver in my mind.

Great analysis by Mark as ever. Lets not go back to multiple tyre suppliers - I remember those days. At times if your car was tied to the 'wrong' manufacturer's tyre you might as well not race. Marc, if an amount of downforce is removed from the upper body of the vehicle, yet a roughly equivalent downforce is applied to the undercarriage and diffuser, does that change the dynamic of adhesion, therefore affecting the safety considerations for the sport? Long winded, but thanks for your commentary!

Hi Marc, I just wanted to add to your comments and point out to the Lewis haters. There are a lot of drivers that have had cars capable of winning championships, Bottas, Leclerc, Barrichello, Massa, Coulthard, Irvine, Webber that have never won a single championship and many more, Rosberg, Button, Raikkonen, Hill (Damon), Villeneuve that only managed a single Championship. Add to that drivers from runners up cars like, Perez (McLaren), Schumacher (Ralf)(Williams), Montoya (Williams), Verstappen (Red Bull), To get in the best car in the first place you need to prove you are good enough, but to stay there you need to perform at the very top level to stay ahead of the best of the rest. So if Lewis has won more championships than all the Men mentioned in the list above put together (and I would add that it is a list of some fairly descent drivers, I.M.O.) the argument that he is just lucky really doesn't add up. He may have been lucky in 2006 to get the 2007 McLaren drive but it is his greatness that has given him 6 World Championships.

A sport like the UFC or boxing is something you have to pay for it’s frustrating, but I think it’s crazy f1 has honestly ruined the sport by charging pay per view. However it’s pointless as well cause there are websites you can go on where you get streams showing the races live for free.

Here we go again. It's time people admit that they quite frankly don't want Lewis Hamilton to be their world champion. Being honest about it would be much sooner understood than the spurious nonsense they ramble about. Forget about winning a championship, a race even, which driver has qualified on pole without being in one of top three teams on the grid? That has only happened when some unsuspecting circumstance, such as rain or a crash, opened the door to a podium outsider. Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayerton Senna, Michael Schumacher, all these drivers enjoyed success at a time when their teams dominated the sport. Now, the idea that the British public or people anywhere for that matter, might be less appreciative of Lewis' success due to the sport not being televised is simply laughable. I mean seriously, in 2019 who gets their sports updates on tv?? I'm not even going to waste any more time on that point. The fact is, Lewis Hamilton can win 10 more championships and that wouldn't be nearly enough to appease those who cling to their obvious bias.

#askelvis hey Marc! So with the budget cap coming in for 2021, does that mean the bigger teams will have to start laying off jobs for people at their factories? If yes, doesn't it seem a bit unfair because all said and done, teams like mercedes are empowering people by offering so many jobs.
@F1Elvis

It will mean that eventually, but unfair though it may seem, we can't just leave expenditure at unsustainable levels just to keep those jobs.

#AskElvis Hi Marc, Will the Budget cap hurt the engine manufacturers more than the customer teams? Also Honda does not have an F1 team, will they have a separate Budget cap or will they share theirs will RedBull?
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 4 года назад
Engine providers do not have to adhere to the budget cap. They can spend as much as they wish because it's an automanufacturer. Mercedes amg is actually two companies. Brackley and Brixworth. Brackley where the chassis is built has to adhere to the budget cap, not brixworth which is a subsidiary of Daimler.
@F1Elvis

Engine manufacturers fall outside of the budget restrictions as it's not them that sign up to the sport, they simply supply PU's to the sport's competitors.

Not sure about the lack of free over air play that matters. I think there are a lot more kinds of entertainment vying for everyone's eyes. Even compared to 10 years ago there are multiples more options and so viewers eyes are so much more spread out. I certainly never expected so many view for these big youtubers or e sports plus so many sports that already existed now able to follow more easily, plus general youtube, netflix and the like. Kids have more organized activities than ever before so they and parents have less free time and need to pick how to dedicate it. Edit: that said, i absolutely agree that the more easy it can be made to access the better though amusing so much competition. There should be a way to pay for F1, i live the work they put out but without all the cable bundles i haven't had for 15 years or so. I want to pay for the good work put out but there needs to be a way to do it. The model needs to change and fast.

In wet races the most talented stand out, the drivers with ability to make micro-second adjustments in car control to stay on track and keep the speed. The arguments for who is best driver will always continue that's normal but for wet race ability I think Lewis Hamilton stands at the top. I'll get shot down now by MSC fans, or Jim Clark & Max Verstappen fans but just opinion.

Lewis does have a massive fanbase in Great Britain. However there is a concerted effort to diminish his accomplishments for reasons I best not go into here. Many of the gripes people have with him is media fabricated. It's the usual - hair style, tattoos, lifestyle, tax dodging. Oddly, you never hear those claims about Button, Mansell or Jackie, who have all lived extravagant lives in tax havens.

But why do we praise the driver like he is great if its the cars make 90% of the difference. Lewis, Senna, Schumi, Seb all had dominant cars and when they had a normal car they look normal amoungst the rest of the grid. In my opinion Fangio was the greatest as the risk to drive cars that fast while drivers were dying like flies each season.

Saying Fangio didn't have dominant cars is very shortsighted or ignorant. He specifically sought out the best car for that calendar year, sometimes leaving mid season for a superior ride. No driver has ever won in a car incapable of winning. The notion that lewis or any other multiple world champ had it "easy" is inflammatory and lack basic understanding of motor racing.

However, once they come out of such schemes and 3 years have passed they are eligible for an honour. Completely off-topic of anything talked about recently, but am I the only one who thinks Verstappen is an arrogant, spoiled brat? I get that he is very talented, but the way he drives and the comments he makes seems that he expects other drivers to give him respect that I don't feel he has earned yet. Another reason I don't really care for him is that it seems that the stewards treat him differently than the other drivers. Of course he gets penalties, but it seems that he gets far fewer for more aggressive driving and defending...this worries me as a new F1 fan because the rules should be applied equally across all drivers; perhaps this reveals a deeper issue with stewarding in general...your thoughts?

I don't know where you live, but since broadcast TV and the radio is "free", does that mean you cannot voice your opinion on the content or format?. And besides, this channel is being monetized, and depends on the number of views for any income. It may not amount to much at the moment, but I bet with time it will only grow. Windbush movement in Britian is why Lewis Hamilton doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Any other reason is to deny the covert racism the permeates European culture. It's worth noting, Lewis will have to be Knighted much the same as Jackie Steward, so y'all going to have a cringe worthy, swallow your arrogant pride moment. It will worsen when Hamilton ties and ultimately passes Schumacher.
