I think the penalty for Verstappen was at the lighter end. It is so important that drivers lift and are careful about people on the track etc. I thought Sebastion's comment after was relevant. He basically said at that moment your lap does not matter it's all about the safety of the potentially injured driver, the marshals and others who may be on the track.

The average this year for single yellow "no lift" was a 3 place penalty, and 5 place for double yellow. No penalty for Lewis' "no lift" though.

@@TheJAMF Have just watched a rerun of qualifying and there wasn't a Yellow out when Lewis went past but there was for Vettel as they showed his onboard and he did lift. tbh Max should have been under investigation as he produced a purple sector then and the micro sectors showed him purple in the particular micro sector where the waved yellows leading through the waved yellows. Still not a fan of the race video director. Too many pointless camera shots. I don’t care what “celebrity” is in the garage. I don’t care what other people are in the garage. I don’t care to watch the race leader going around the track all alone. Why can’t they show what little on track action there is? They need to fire the production staff and get some new blood in there. Thankfully the best thing I’ve recently found is the “FX” audio channel on F1TV. It allows me to just watch the race with the car/track sounds and none of the useless commentary from the SKY Sports people. Crofty is the absolute worse when it comes to pointlessly over dramatizing things and becoming falsely over excited about completely mundane racing. Sorry about the rant. Thank you for addressing my question. No, wasn't looking at it as an excuse for Verstappen's decision. I was more concerned with the safety aspects of it and wondering why Race Control wouldn't have radioed to other marshaling posts to go yellow or even gone to a virtual safety car given the nature of the turn to neutralize the danger. It is also strange that the electronics for the Marshaling system would be set up on the track side of the barriers or could be damaged by a car crashing into the barriers... that seems like a recipe for disaster. Max was behind Lewis and Seb , which means he was at least 10-20 seconds behind Valtteri. I realize it is a short period of time, but usually Race Control responds very quickly to these incidents, and I think that a FSC or Red Flag would have been the right call given the circumstances. Thankfully it seems like the worst that happened was Valtteri owes the boys and girls in the garage a nice barbecue in Austin.

9:50 I might have missed something, but I haven’t heard Max admit anywhere that he saw the yellow flag (on his onboard he’s looking the other way). He did admit that he saw that Bottas had crashed (which in my opinion should be treated by the drivers as a yellow flag right away), but nothing else as far as I know. It doesn’t really matter and the penalty was 100% correct, but we shouldn’t put words into peoples mouths. It does somewhat surprise me that hardly anyone is talking about Lewis going full throttle past his crashed teammate. Sure no yellow flags were waved yet, but there was a dangerous situation none the less.

They should make a rule to reward teams for taking multiple pitstops. Make the racing and strategy more exciting. How about if you have used all 3 compounds of tires, you can use DRS in each zone without having to be 1 second behind someone (like in qualy).

Totally agree with the last question. What we have seen from the new aero rules look extremely positive especially with the emphasis on ground effect. And yes not only getting the funding to a more level playing field, I also feel that the teams have way too much data before and during the race. It's the strategists job to make the race as predictable as possible but then you get races that are well predictable. I know Mercedes have an off track control room full of strategists giving data to the ones at the track. I don't know if all the teams have this but I feel that at least this should be made illegal. All the teams should have a limited number of strategists and data to play with at the track ONLY! The less data the teams have at their disposal the more they will have to think on their feet at the pit-wall and on track, giving us more exciting races. What do you think?
@F1Elvis
@F1Elvis 4 года назад
Yes, all teams use a remote mission control room back at base, but I agree, limiting the amount of simulation would make it harder to control the outcome for teams.

I am trying to figure out why people think that Ferrari is burning oil as fuel. When it could simply be as simple as being right on the edge of flashing/vaporizing the oil in the charge cooler without atomizing it into the charge air. Phase shift can create a large enough temperature shift to be beneficial. And it would be really difficult to figure that out because Parc Ferma is done after everything has cooled down. And it could be done as simply as constraining/restricting the flow of the oil through the charge cooler allowing the oil to heat up enough to flash.

#AskElvis. Hey Marc, Got lots of questions on the new regs. Think you might want to make a separate askelvis video for the new regs. Here's my list: 1. Park ferme from FP3? Why? 2. Will the two tiny wings above the front wheels interfere with pit stops? 3. "FP3 also marks the point at which the teams must return their cars to the ‘reference specification’ presented for scrutineering before FP1, so any bodywork trialled in practice must be removed." Do they mean Q1 where they've put FP1? If not, could you explain this? 4. Will moving the pre race press conference really change anything? What is the motive for this change? 5. F1 have introduced further restrictions on changing components like brake pads and exhaust systems. Won't this increase the gap between bigger teams and smaller teams by testing the teams ability to make more durable parts?

Hiya Marc, great video. One other point on the issue of single and double pit stops during a race. Could it also be a factor in the teams choice of going for a single stop is that the performance differential between the different compounds isn't great enough. We now have drivers 'looking after/managing' their tyres to dismiss the need for a possible two stop race but also in the process negating 'quality' racing by avoiding graining or overheating their tyres which at the begining are intended by the teams/Pirelli to last an inordinate amount of laps. They've gotten rid of refueling, maybe they now want to engineer tyres that will last the entire race - thus eliminating pit stops entirely.

I grew up watching the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500 and the Talladega 500. I am really enjoying the technicality a Formula One. Isnt the difference between Ferrari Vs Ferrari customer power units because no one other than Ferrari is running this year's spec 3 engines? Read somewhere that Ferrari gave everyone new spec 2 engines before they released spec 3. Now it is out, they have to give it to everyone but now it would only be in case of someone taking an engine penalty, which no one has done yet. Very crafty by Ferrari as they haven't actually broken any rules. All their teams are running the latest spec engines at time of that engine being delivered
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 4 года назад
Correct. Ferrari doesn't sell their spec three to their customers. As per the rule, they have to provide it if their customers ask, but when your customers are your technical partner and b-team. I doubt that will ever happen. In 2016 didn't they sell STR a year old motor?

I had read around the Spa weekend that the customer teams had opted for a new PU, but the Ferrari works team wasn't implementing that PU in their cars themselves. Why don't FIA and Pirelli just allow teams to run the same tire three times if they commit to a 2-stop? It might add enough speed to the 2-stop to counter the generic Soft-Hard or Soft-Medium or Medium-Hard like we always get, and negate the chance of a 2-stop strategy having to end on the same tire as the 1-stoppers anyways, like Seb was behind Lewis, where fresh Hards weren't significantly faster than worn ones, a set of Mediums maybe would have been.

Changing regulations to encourage better racing is great; and of course engine philosophies need to move with the times (introducing hybrids, etc) - but we see it time & time again where there's a huge reg change; one team dominates; we have the "F1 is boring & predictable" chat; then a massive overhaul is plotted as a recoil to the dominance...just as teams start to converge & we get the best racing. I'd like to see smaller changes season-to-season moving towards a common goal rather than the "We must change *everything* at once to stop Merc/Red Bull/Ferrari dominating!" approach...because by the time regs are agreed & the change happens, a big part of the original problem has been resolved 'naturally'. In & after 2021, do we expect one team to run away with it for several years & the racing be dull again....? Likely.

It was a really cool race imo, right about to the last few laps. Once Lewis stopped worrying about tyres and it was clear that Seb, Veltari and Charles are unable to close below 1s to the driver in front for more than a corner without overheating. This is the most important thing the 2021 regs need to fix, that drivers can challenge and keep the fight alive for the whole of the race. That said I don't think there was a lot Ferrari could do, we've seen in the last few years Merc qualify 1&2 and lose on strategy because the driver in 3rd or 4th went to an alternative strategy. Going from 4th to 5th or 6th is a small risk, especially when you have the championship in the bag, but when you are in the lead of the race and gp wins are the only thing left fighting for this year you have to play it safe.

So since it was a huge problem in Mexico, but there have been brake problems where overheating of them is what forced drivers to back off- a suggestion is a spec brake duct that was too large. In theory, that will put an equal drag on each car that is too much, make sure the brakes don't over heat, and may allow cars to attack. For sure, brake ducts are something we barely notice on the car. And it should rid us of the radio messages "brakes getting too hot" and allow closer racing.
@PeRRXX
@PeRRXX 4 года назад
The problem with a spec brake duct is that you it would have different affects on different cars. It may have a bigger affect on Mercedes, while at RB or McLaren, it may not have as big of an affect.
@alfamaize
@alfamaize 4 года назад
@@PeRRXX The goal is to prevent any car from having brakes overheat- which is bad for racing. So make them big and equal. If that effects cars unequally, so be it. But it would at least prevent cars from backing off due to hot brakes- which has happened a lot this season. And I suspect engineers are clever enough to make it more equal.
@PeRRXX
@PeRRXX 4 года назад
alfamaize yes that’s the goal, but the teams should be able to create their won that works with the car, but it would still need to work within guidelines, Like require a certain amount of air it has to take in. Then we could have closer racing, but also while having it work with the flow of the car.
@alfamaize
@alfamaize 4 года назад
@@PeRRXX Nah- cost save. Build around it. Again, this is an area that no fan ever notices, and I'm sure hours and hours of optimization is spent on it. And the current benefit is brakes that overheat. I'm sure that even with a air flow requirement, engineers would find a way to reduce drag and reduce the effectiveness. Marc and others has proposed the idea of spec aero, and other spec parts- this one is very hidden, and the drag reduction work makes the racing worse.

Agree the qual/racing has been such that you don’t know who is going to turn up on the day. Pleased Toto killed the reverse grid. F1 is a franchise not a competitive race like LeMan so the TV revenue should be shared evenly as if it were the marketing budget for the series. The big change should be an relatively unlimited number of tyres for the weekend to allow maximum track time as a spectacle for the circuit spectators. I like the proposed change to allow the top 10 to choose their race tyre. True, and considering different aero philosophies I'd be inclined to think there would be differences in the recovery and deployment. For example if HAAS tried using Ferrari's fuel maps they might suffer cooling issues & handling issues from the regeneration affecting speed and therefore down force. They definitely would want to deploy differently to optimise their lap time with slower corner speeds needing extra punch on exit. That's one example as to why they seem to perform differently, even though it's more to do with the differing PU management & car PHILOSOPHIES than anything else.

I agree Ferrari should have paid more attention to how long and how well Danny-Ric was running on the hards. But Mercedes knew going into the race they could do a one stopper on using the hards as they were the only team who ran a long stint on the hards in practice. As soon as I heard Lewis complaining about his tires early in the stint, it was clear this was a disinformation play on their part so the other teams would think they would have to pit Lewis again. This is not the first time this season this sort of thing has happened when Lewis starts complaining that his tires are going, and yet he continues to maintain pace all the while expressing concern. I don't fault Mercedes/Lewis for this sort of thing. When trying to win a championship, nothing should be left on the table. What's annoying is that Ferrari keeps taking that bait.

He had no way of knowing how dangerous was the situation at the exit of the turn, how many cars were involved, if there're marshals on track, etc... I didn't hear much about the backmarkers Seb had to deal during the race, at the moment I felt he lost a huge amount of time having really bad luck with them, catching them into slow sections or having quite the battle between them, it left me thinking that with a bit less chaos in front of him he might have had the chance to attack harder or made Lewis put more stress on his tires.

I came here after watching Rosberg's video where he was way too easy on Ferrari and didn't even acknowledge that the cars couldn't close up on each other at the end of the race. This was a really tough one to watch, and I think every armchair strategist in the world was screaming at Ferrari to pit Seb after Lewis came in. Also, how secret was this "Prat's Perch" term? @@boostav You actually made me go back and rewatch that part of the race. Soon after Lewis pits, Ferrari orders Seb to put his car in "mode box" Seb reponds "Let him (Lewis) go. What do you think of letting him go?" Ferrari: "We're thinking (?) mode box anyway (??)" Then ultimately, at least according to Paul Diresta who was reporting on the team radio transmissions for Sky, Ferrari came back over the radio before the lap was over and ordered Seb to stay out. So that's pretty interesting. It's not quite as straightforward as you said but there is a case to be made that if Seb had trusted the team's strategists more, he'd have pitted the lap after Lewis and had a good chance to keep his track position and win. At the same time, it seems like Seb made the Ferrari strategists doubt their own decision and ultimately change their minds, which imo did cost them the win.

So, if others brought the Engines in the begining of the season and was not stated on contract that any improvements were shared with old engines, then case solved. I think the part the Ferrari might have missed as well as the commentators was two things, first how Lewis had performed at Monaco on tires that should have been toast. Yes it's much easier to pass in Mexico than Monaco, but go back and listen to the conversation between Lewis and the team at Monaco and Mexico was almost the same conversation, with James telling Lewis he could do it. One has to wonder if a paraphrase of the old Shakespeare line me dost think thee protest too much might apply. ""The lady doth protest too much, methinks" is a line from the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare." Add to this that the Ferrari does not like to follow, and may have been running even less brake cooling than Mercedes. Charles clearly seemed to loose heart once he was back in fourth. Mercedes had done longer runs with the hard tire than others from the data given on the various broadcasts.

Watched the press conference regarding the 2021 regulations earlier and I’m pleased with the outcome but something is really bugging me 😬 The cars are 3 to 3.5 seconds slower (understandably). To minimise that gap further, why wouldn’t they introduce active suspension (which is road car relevant and won’t effect loss of performance when following another car)? But mainly, why haven’t they allowed the manufactures to increase the maximum potential from the current battery (harvest energy/energy output/power)?? They can use the same hardware, it won’t increase emissions, the cars would more efficient, it won’t affect the aero performance when following another car and decrease lap time. I just don’t understand Mark 🤦🏽‍♂️ please could you share your thoughts, I would really appreciate it! Sorry if this long but I’ve tried my best to keep it brief. Thanks for your videos - love your work!

Active suspension is expensive to manufacture and set-up. F1 is aiming towards reducing costs. Active suspension will also make driving easier, there would be no balance issues for drivers to drive around and nobody wants to see that. Really enjoy your videos Marc, but I’m getting a bit sick of the anti-Ferrari bias. Yes, they’ve made plenty of strategy mistakes and have been justly criticized for it. In Mexico, they made a blunder with Leclerc. But Vettel’s situation was very similar to Max in Hungary. Lewis has to take a risk because both teams knew you couldn’t overtake without a significant advantage. Ferrari could’ve pitted Vettel the lap after Lewis but would’ve come out second and been unable to overtake. Therefore, their only option was to run longer and hope the tyre advantage would be enough. As it turned out it wasn’t but Vettel still finished second which is where he would be had he pitted in response to Lewis. The trailing car always has an advantage when it comes to dictating pitstop timing. Vettel’s side of the garage did the best with the situation they had.
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 4 года назад
I agree with this. Confirmation bias sees many unjustly blaming ferrari for the race result. Fact is, various factors came into play compromising their race. Leclerc was pitted early because they had to cover albon. At that point, everyone was on a two stop strategy. lewis/mercedes superior race pace saw him inch up toward seb, within undercut range. Being behind they pulled the plug early, far too early. There was no way mercedes knew, even observing Daniel's stint, the tires would last 47 laps. They hoped it would but it was very risky. Ferrari/vettel considered responding but lewis' outlap took that option off the table - so they went long, confident lewis would hit the cliff. It wasn't a guess either, friday's running showed massive deg and blistering on the merc, worse than ferrari. They figured said Leclerc was on the optimal strategy but reality said otherwise. TBF to Ferrari they did nothing wrong and couldn't have done anything better. The 10degree increase in race day temp, kept the pirelli within their operating window and the hards showed little to no deg. Plus the ferrari motor, while more potent is less efficient than the merc. Ferrari was running out of fuel and had to lift and coast. For once James Vowles utilized the undercut. About freaking time.
@F1Elvis
