The second song that you heard after Carry Stress was called "Secret Song". Here's a (huge) snippet from an interview of bassist Trevor Dunn that explains what tf is going on: As I mentioned, we basically lived in the recording studio . We would spend entire days and nights in there without seeing the sun. In addition to this we tried to carry on with some of our normal lives. I had some jazz gigs in town and one night I had to step out early to go to this gig. Unbeknownst to me, while I was out the other guys arranged a song and recorded it. Since I wasn’t there you’d have to ask them how that actually went down, but the song was compiled from our ‘graveyard of riffs’. The graveyard consisted of countless riffs and orphaned phrases that never found a home. Anyone could pilfer from the graveyard at anytime. A few days later I was rummaging around the studio and came across a DAT tape where I discovered a rough mix of this song. Busted. Incidentally that is Bär on drums, Mike on bass and I believe Danny is playing keyboards although I’m not 100% sure. The next level of secrecy was that Mike didn’t know I had discovered the tape. He wasn’t around that day, but everyone else knew that I knew. Later, we were in another studio and I decided to record the old man vocals which were for the most part improvised (as if that isn’t obvious). The plan was to keep these vocals a secret from Mike until the record actually came out. That would have been a very difficult task to uphold. It didn’t work and Mike somehow heard the recording with my vocals. However, the other guys didn’t know that he knew, so when the record came out he pretended to be pissed off about it, saying that the vocals ruined the song. I was the only one who knew he wasn’t really angry. We maintained the secrecy of the song by 1) not listing it on the CD (some people continue to think it’s called “Carry Stress In the Jaw”) and 2) hiding it in a hidden groove on the vinyl. We also never played it live.
@zill9116
@zill9116 2 года назад
The vinyl release with the hidden groove meant you would hear either carry stress in the jaw or the secret song, one song would be chosen at random each time you played it.

Thanks so much for that story! I never knew and it's given me a while new viewpoint for the song! I love how these guys just fuck about like that and then we end up with a truly unique and fun style music. I wonder how much genius lies dormant in that "graveyard". I'd give my right and left testical to have access to all of that material!

Virtually the whole album (Disco Volante) has the same feel, but each track has it's own stamp and character. This was an Edgar Allan Poe inspired jazz-metal track, but there's Arabian nights Techno, 50's rockabilly death metal, an underwater David Lynch horror, platypus jazz, scat jazz, and an Italian Mafia ASMR track among others.

@@MrMiko1aj Each of their songs typically traverses a vast spectrum of genres. And one significant element that typically denotes their musical-philosophy, is genre-hopping, mid-song. This is, together with Ars Moriendi, my favorite Mr. Bungle song. I just how it goes from jazz to metal and all kinds of stuff in between and ends as a sort of spy movie theme. This is Mr. Bungle at it's finest! Ars Moriendi covers at least the same broad variety of styles, if not more.

Hello, sir.:) I'm so glad you enjoyed "this unique piece", because ... you haven't actually heard one, but - two songs! :)) I looked at the comments below and realized that literally no one informed you about it. :) Well, someone has to, so it looks like it will be me. :) Which means - it's a double pleasure for us, it's also for you, but ok - no one is to blame, it's just - the concept of this album. On `Disco Volante`, it is quite difficult to distinguish the end of one song and the beginning of another. ;) So, in this particular example, the real explanation for what's going on is this: the song "Carry Stress in the Jaw" starts with jazz-samba, then goes with that speed-metal part, and then there's that heavy chaos and the melancholy part, then the groove-metal part and jazz-samba again, and it finally ends with that wild speed-metal ... and that's it. :) But then, the song called "The Secret Song (A Spy)" starts without any warning.:))) It's really a secret song from this album, because it's not titled on the playlist ...;) This little parody of rockabilly, `James Bond` tunes of the 50`s and 60`s a-la- Tarantino - style...:) is actually an internal joke of the band members: you see, they secretly recorded it to some extent without the knowledge of the bassist, and then...the bassist found out about it without the knowledge of the other guys and...:) he added spice secretly recording his own voice in the style of Grandpa Simpson to make some `sweet revenge` hahah... And then the rest of the guys found what he did and decided to leave it as it was.:) So, there are actually two singers in this song: bassist (Trevor Dunn, what do you say about his jazz abilities, huh? ..: D) and of course Mike Patton (those perfect vocal lines `la-la-la` ...). That`s the whole story, check those lyrics: "I know the secret song now, they wouldn`t tell me but somehow I found out"...:))) As if that wasn't enough, this secret song ends with an introduction to the next one! :) Yeah, it's those bongos or timpani, I don't know, along with Patton bleating with his voice ... So, you actually heard the beginning of the song called "Desert Search for Techno Allah" (huh, what a title?... orient and disco-rave inspired - oh, you haven`t heard nothing yet!:D)...I guess at this point you've already realized how diverse this band really is and yes - deff. not recognizable only if you start with "Pink Cigarette".;) And yes, further listening to them deff. promises fantastic fun, the following titles are a sure goal for that! :)) It`s not the fault of the author of this yt-clip either, he published it as it is organized on this album, so I guess these guys made a fools of us all hahah....! Okay, a lot of people don’t know about this, nor about the wild, clownish philosophy they reflect, so to speak, but now you got a real glimpse of their sound. Great, man! :) Thank you for that and thank you in advance for the next reaction to their music.:) They sound like no other band, with so many different musical styles embedded in their death-metal background, and they are literally the creators of the so called `nu-metal` scene, but their own creativity is unsurpassed, trust me.:) Bands influenced by them: Korn, S.O.A.D., Incubus, Deftones and especially Slipknot (who shamelessly stole them in wearing clown masks and the whole stage presence !) and many others praise them and Mike Patton for the courage they gave them to be in music at all, but the result of those bands is somehow pale and lukewarm for the older ears familiar with this famous band when compared to it. :) So good that you found them - `The original source`, so to speak.:) I can recommend "Goodbye, Sober Day" (from the 3rd album `California` from which "Pink Cigarette" is), but also the song called "Squeeze me Macaroni" from their first, self titled album.:) The song you reacted to is from their 2nd album called `Disco Volante` (`Flying Saucer`, on ital.). :-) BTW, how many metal bands do you know with saxophone and the brass section and the bunch of keyboards and semplers? Well, here`s the original one... ;) Finally, at this point, I want to send greeting to a dear friend of mine who actually left you a comment here, Roxanne Mitchell. :) Hello, Roxxie, hiiii!.... :)))) Roxanne is as familiar with Patton's music as I am, so it`s no wonder I find her here on your channel. :) She could help you with recommendations like me ... :) Roxxie, wonderful job here, don`t ya think!? :D Tnx and see you, man! :D Much obliged! :)

I apologize for taking a while to reply; between running both this channel and my movie review channel, and keeping up with my three kiddos, sometimes it takes me a little while before I can get to replying to everyone's comments, but I'm working hard to catch up on replying to all the comments on the channel and will hopefully be caught up soon. Thank you again for your awesome comment and again for all of that really cool information! I definitely look forward to diving deeper into the Mr. Bungle catalog. To answer your question, there's only two bands that come to my mind right off that meet that description, and that's GWAR (which isn't quite the same thing lol) and the original EP lineup of Slipknot, which as you pointed out, came out after Bungle, so, I'm inclined to agree with your statement--they are definitely an original band.

 @Jonathon Thames Music Hey, my dear man, no hard feelings, I assumed it was such a situation ...;) Sorry if I sounded a bit rude, I happened to get a couple - should I say - ignores from a few people around, it filled a cup that accidentally spilled on your channel, so what a bummer, ha ..!. :) I hope you don't mind and that you do well wherever you are. :) Thumbs up! :) Of course I know GWAR, they are hilarious.:) Yes, it's still not my cup of tea, because their music is not as wide, wild and progressive as Bungle`s , if y.k.wh.I.mean, but ok, I know how they work.:) For example, similar to them, but maybe even funnier are "Green Jelly". Did you listen to them? Same thing: masks and looney-metal, with a few atypical genres for heavy sound, but that's such a range ... On the other hand, Mr. Bungle is somehow different: there is a dark seriousness and wonderful, dark thoughtfulness hidden behind the clownish melodies and below the grotesque masks, which appears when you check their lyrics later, but I guess you’ll figure it out for yourself as soon as you check out a few more of their songs .... Exactly like Frank Zappa was pulling it off, as you said it, still Mr.B. are familiar with the fact that people and critics often compare their sound to his, but the truth is that Zappa really didn’t have that much of an impact on them, Zappa is basically his own complete story, right? :) No, sir, indeed, Mr.B. are a kind of new tree of their own..:D However, they are equally magically intriguing, mainly because of their, in their words - "impossible music". :) And it's really true, when you listen to them, you'll find that it's often hard to explain how it's possible for a person to compose, record and even play songs of this style live, but I guess it's only a matter of time to accept the sheer brilliance they offer as a challenging musical experience. :) With that said, you`re absolutely right `bout Slipknot: yes, they also have their own special sound, but it kinda remains in the `metal` grid, if you get me?...Worse, it's Nu-metal, something harmless, heheh ... And I won't even comment on the commercial abduction of the Mr.B mask iconography! ...since you've already arrived here - it's obvious, come on, admit it ...: - / The worst thing, in fact, is that this particular Slipknot sound is their maximum capacity for creativity, and they are still in the grid - in the grid which Mr.Bungle skips whenever they find a reason for it.:)))) You get it now? The multitude of these `jumps` in music of Mr.Bungle created a completely new future scene and a bunch of those modern bands - and Slipknot is just one of them...:D Imagine how huge an impact they had. :) You couldn't see Incubus and their singer imitating Mike Patton anyway without M.P. himself and Mr.Bungle.:)) Johnathan Davis, singer of Korn - same story. Corey Tailor of Slipknot - oh, so clearly...:) Chino Moreno from Deftones - Patton literally `created` him, or I should say he inspired him when he got him drunk after Faith No More finished their gig , and just when the Deftones were on their way to play :) Moreno came on stage distraught from drinking and under the vivid impressions of hanging out with Patton that Deftones with that wild energy had killed it that night with their performance and from that moment on became famous. :) True, true...:) Serj Tankian from System of a Down is a year older than Patton, but again, he was also under Patton's influence when he decided to form his own band.;) Not to mention Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, POD, Coal Chamber , Disturbed ..... all those bands and many more - all the kids of Mike Patton, Faith No More and Mr.Bungle. :) So, you really got to the jackpot. :) I still recommend the same to you: "Goodbye, sober day" (from the 3rd album) and "Squeeze my macaroni" (from the 1st album), but we could freely add "Desert Search for Techno Allah" to that list (from the 2nd album) ...In the future I will find time to graphically explain the musical quintessence of each of their three official albums. It`s good to know. :) Thanks again and ... in advance, what can I say. :)) I'll see you soon!!~Bye.:)

@@boyhrn No worries man, I took no offense :). Believe me, I know how it is to go onto someone's channel and give a heartfelt and sincere comment that you genuinely give to provide value, and to feel ignored when the comment doesn't appear to be given the time of day, and it's definitely my goal NOT to be that guy lol. You bring up some very interesting points about the music sprung out of Patton's influence; I have to say I never had really considered that in many of those instances, but I can definitely appreciate the elements you're pointing out with many of those bands when I stop and think about it. Just to clarify on the previous Slipknot comment, I was referring to their first EP (Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. from '96) prior to their breakout album in 99; what they became at that point was definitely more "gridded in", but wasn't bad there for a while. Definitely interested in checking out those other tunes! I've gone ahead and added them all to the list. Thank you so much again for stopping by to check out the video and for your comment! :)

Pink Cigarette just wanst the better way to got into Mr. Bungle. For me, you must follow the clasic álbum order. Only that way you could enjoy much more musical pieces like 'Pink', Goodbye Sober Day, The Holy Filament, Bionic II, etc.

Now that the first mr bungle demo was re-recorded, you should even listen the original 1986 demo, the raging wrath of the easter bunny (even if it sounds like shit) to understand even more what mr bungle is. New subscriber, I would suggest Carousel or Travolta off of their self-tllitled album and maybe something off of their new old album Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny. A rerecording of a thrash metal album that they made as teenagers with guest musicians Scott Ian of Anthrax and Dave Lombardo of Slayer.
