This week Anvil tests whether a Maple Leaf MR Hop is better than an Psionic Upgrades (Psi Hop) Rhop setup for your Airsoft replica.
The Maple Leaf setup uses a Maxi Pro Hop, ML MR Hop (yellow), Omega Nub and a Madbull Black Python 6.03 Barrel.
The Rhop barrel is by Psionic Upgrades, it arrived with the Patch in place and all other parts supplied other than the hop unit. The same Madbull Black Python 6.03 barrel is used.
All Airsoft replicas are used in a safe manner on an approved range. Appropriate eye protection and safety procedures were followed at all times

Great video. I have a Mr Hop rubber in the matching Maple leaf 6.02mm barrel and its fantastic. Trued one in a 6.03 barrel with a standard window and it was all over the place. What kind of nub were you using with the psi hop and the mr hop? Just curious because I had a well made and fitted r hop that I installed in a lambda 6.01 and the performance with a concave nub was not even close to the performance I achieved with a 70 degree MR hop silicone bucking with the same nub…. I think the nub seems to play a big part in getting the most out of a particular hop setup and of course the barrel as well since some barrels don’t have a correctly shaped/sized window to make use of the mr hop bucking.

I think the MR hop is a good rubber, with some caveats. You need to find a barrel that works well with it, ideally one that has a large window, as well as a hop chamber that likes the rubber as well. It's not as simple as drop it in and get amazing results, but once you find a good barrel and hop unit to pair with it you've got a good setup, without the hassle of gluing patches to a barrel. However Rhops are still king!

While I appreciate the demonstration, I can't help thinking there's a point of diminishing returns. I managed 57m with .25s at around 1.12J with a Systema hop rubber and a white H hop, this was when I was in my really nerdy phase calculating the actual volume of the cylinder that was swept by the o-ring and the barrel volume ratio and about 2 years before G hop (precursor idea to flat hop and R hop) came out of Japan. This was on a similar range (50-100m outdoor .22 range) and shot prone, no hold over. So while it's technically impressive to get up to 13m more, I'd be interested to see if we can start getting measures of time to impact, or how many hits out of 10 can be made on targets moving left/right at set speeds at set distances. Or even just an visualization of how much hold over is needed, because while Airsoft does have its own quirks I broadly expect not to have use hold over unless what I'm shooting at is being an absolute slug and has a poor chance of getting out of the way of a lobbed shot. Feels almost like an Airsoft analogue to what went on in the world of small arms - yes we have range but at what range are most of the hits actually being made? This is obviously seguing into max range vs effective range but for our plastic muskets it doesn't seem to have moved on much from about 55m.
@AnvilAirsoftTV
@AnvilAirsoftTV 2 года назад
Some interesting points, I agree that max range is just one aspect, what distance people zero for is another. Hold over in both cases is around 1-2 targets high, or in real terms if aiming for the head the BB would strike the legs. What I find especially with heavier BBs is that increasing max range also pushes out effective range. In the case of the PSI hop its 50-60m (so as you say about 55m) depending on conditions. Its up to the user whether that's worth it, plus the increased cost in using sniper grade heavy ammo. What these upgrades really do is allow AEGs to use better and heavy ammo without loosing too much energy. Time to target is over 1 second past 50m. I can work out the flight time for the70m .36g PSI hop shot. Through testing most stock UK AEGs get about 50-55m max and 30-40m effective at 1.1J. I'm going to show the real accuracy & range differences in an upgraded and stock AEG soon.
@AidanMyne
@AidanMyne 2 года назад
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Will keep an eye out for it - for me the metric I worked to was if I could put 10/10 shots in semi or as a burst into a piece of portrait A4 at 50-60m aiming for the middle of it (target frame was roughly torso size, taped some lining paper to it, spray painted it black, stuck white A4 in the middle, spray a black dot in the middle for a point of aim), that may not be the absolute maximum range but meant that as long as there was an A4 'corridor' between me and the target I'd pretty sure of my capability to hit it. With Saturday and Sunday skirmishing I found that most engagements happened at 30-40m, having a gun tuned so you could start effectively harassing/hitting people at a distance where if they started having to lob BBs back there's were stalling out of the sky a few feet short of you or were so lazily travelling through the air by the time they got near you it was a relaxed affair getting out of the way. With film/milsim I suspect it depends on site/sight lines - one of the most naff things I've experienced is having to advance across 100m of open ground with both sides lobbing fire at one another until we got within 70m and it was like dodging rain drops. Still, nice to see proof that no one is making 100m shots at 1.1ish J !
@AnvilAirsoftTV
@AnvilAirsoftTV 2 года назад
One of my big bugs is sites with ranges that exceed max/effective range of most AEGs. It’s a bit immersion breaking waving at each other or watching people try and hit you using the old airsoft BB mortor. I think there’s quite a lot of common ground between airsoft and real shooting if you divide all the distances by 10. 10m airsoft being 100m in real shooting. That puts the average engagement in airsoft at 30-40m compared to 300m in real. Longest vaguely sensible repeatable shot I have on camera is 90m using a 2J bolt action with .48g BB.
@AidanMyne
@AidanMyne 2 года назад
@@AnvilAirsoftTV That's about right in there being some degree of 'compression' in the game, years ago when the standard/lo/mid/real cap flamewars were on someone proposed a '1:3' ratio e.g. if a stanag mag irl was 30 rounds then 90-100 rounds would be about right if you wanted a balance between realism and not having to refill 6 mags every 20 minutes in a regular open day. Actual range x 10 for a measure of the impact of that distance on accuracy/shift in point of aim-impact is about right. The super heavy weight BBs really have helped push the 'snipers' out a bit further and I'm glad to see that as the only things heavier than .43s for a while were some ceramic .66 things from the US.
@AnvilAirsoftTV
@AnvilAirsoftTV 2 года назад
I remember the 1:3 days. I think at this point given the availability of decent heavy ammo you can happily do a Filsim/milsim on 1:1. Doing that at a skirmish is a challenge but I enjoy it. You have to be much more careful about when you open fire and be sure of your shot.

I am starting to use MRHop but it is critical to fit it to the hop window. Most OE and aftermarket barrels are not compatable so this may not be a realistic test. The mapleleaf hop is designed to fit mapleleaf barrels. Some ZCI barrels fit out of the box but everything else needs to be hand modded to fit properly. The issue is the length and depth of the hop cut and width of the barrel bridge are critical. If the are not correct it will not perform correctly.
@AnvilAirsoftTV
@AnvilAirsoftTV 2 года назад
I’ve got a maple leaf AEG barrel to re test it on. It does illustrate the point your making that it needs a set of parts to potentially work well and isn’t a drop in hop rubber fix.

Its a shame ML dont give guidence on this as its so critical. A drawing of the best hop window prifile would help. Also as with all moulded rubber parts they have a residue on the surface that can take a hicaps worth of bbs put through them bed it in and get the right friction characteristics.
@AnvilAirsoftTV

Yup. Poorly documented by ML. We find you need 300-600 BBs for any hop to ‘bed in’ and start working properly. It’s all setup now with the new ML AEG barrel so we’ll get to the range soon and see what difference it makes.

I have just bought Maple leaf crazy jet barrel and Maple leaf wonder rubber (which is basicly Autobot without the outer rubber locking nub) for my VFC 416A5 GBBR. Haven't tested it yet.

The joule limitations in the UK are too low..

Maybe but they were set by the government following ballistic testing in labs.

@@MBKill3rCat I mean, its better than nothing but i'd like even just 1.2 joule. Means every gun here is the same, sniper rifles and hand guns the same limit

@@craighutchison5258 In the UK, legal limit is 1.3J, but site limits are almost always 1.13J (350 fps with .20g) for non-snipers. 1.2J is actually pretty high by airsoft standards, you'd probably have to go to the States for that.
