MR2 Spyder Gets a Power FC & Custom Tune

The 2zz swapped MR2 Spyder has been running a Celica GTS cpu. Now it is time to put in a Power FC cpu with a custom tune from Monkey Wrench Racing. The Custom Tune takes advantage of the larger Air Intake and larger PPE exhaust and makes the engine run much better.

I was having the exact same issues with the stock ECU on my 2002 TRD GTS (pops, rough idle, bogged down low and mid range). I just ordered one of these with the same tune from MonkeyWrenchRacing. This video is making me feel a lot better about spending the money on it. Thanks for the review, this is the best one I could find!

Mr. Stark, can I ask how tall are you? 6’1” and considering this platform. Had a Miata NC and sold it after 6 months because I wasn’t comfortable. Love your videos!

I am 6'4" and I fit better in this car than others in this category but my knees are too close to the steering wheel to be able to get my hands past them. Only down side.

Love your series on the MR2! Thinking of getting one to do the 2zz swap myself. Do you still recommend jdm engines? I am thinking of keeping the original gearbox.

At this point you have a better chance of good engine from a JDM source than from a junkyard. The 6 speed is a better choice especially if you can find one with an LSD in it. The 5 speed will work but you will loose performance.

@@gon7177 The US market did not get them directly. The European cars did though so most come from there. Otherwise you have to install the LSD. I don't know how you would tell from markings.

I just had to put the Celica cpu in so I could get an emissions inspection. Once I passed I put the Power FC back in and what a reminder of the huge difference. Love the Power FC with the tune.

@@DimoS... I never did anything to the oil system. Just the standard oil pan.

Great video and love your build, I'm half way through my 2zz spyder build, thinking about the apexi ecu, is it easy to tune, and have you had your car on the dyno?

Zach Klapsis The tune is easy. Just send it in to Monkeywrench and they do it quick. I have not had it on a Dyno but I would love to. I would expect it is around 190 hp.

Zach Klapsis Just the way I approached it. Get all of the codes cleaned up and then go to the new computer.

That's the plan! Does the Power fc have OBDII functionality or show codes on the comander?

Currently having an issue with my swap, something is preventing my dash from getting power, got all the proper wiring done but something is preventing my power from the battery to reach the dash

Sounds like a fuse. Not sure which one could be causing that but there are several different boxes.

Yes, with the adaptations needed for the 2zz install.

I have a 1zz and remus exhaust. Can i use this and have monkeywrench tune it for the exhaust upgrade?

The headers are different between the 1zz and 2zz. You can keep everything after the header but will need a new one for the 2zz.

Apparently this is the only third party ECU that still runs all the dash dials correctly.

Not sure about other ecu's but the Power FC runs everything. I really like. I understand they are not being made any more but you can still find them.

AEM EMS should work too, also megasquirt or speeduino if you're handy doing stuff yourself

Nice vid, but I feel like your clutch is slipping, or is it just the way you release it?

I saw the same thing in the video. It is a new clutch and flywheel so it is not slipping. I must have come off slowly or something. I don't recall exactly.

Yes, it only adds about 5hp to the high end, but a lot more power throughout the mid range, even on a 1zz.

Is there a difference between buying the MRRacing variant and a generic one?

inglewood891 The unit was bought used from another spyder owner. Then I sent it to MRRacing to program it. You could have someone else program it but they were very quick and the tune is perfect. So they are the easiest for the program.

Hello sir. Who installed your engine? I'm in Maryland and I have a 2ZZ, C60 trans, Quaife LSD, amd MWR lightweight flywheel. Still sourcing parts, but will need a mechanic soon and I prefer someone that has done the swap before

@@StarkReality Sir, I definitely can't. Not because I don't have a garage (I don't have a garage), It's because that I can barely swap spark plugs let alone an engine lol. Would you be kind enough to do it for me? :-)
