This review is Menu #1-#24 series from Case A & Case B of 2018 Date of Production MREs. This is Menu #8 Marinara Sauce and Meatballs. It's actually one of the better ones I've tried and kind of reminded me of the ancient brown bag Meatballs in BBQ Sauce.

Nice review Gundog. I agree to the others. Definitely one of the better menus. The mashed potatoes need some nutmeg powder. That is the way to eat mashed potatoes.

This is the last MRE I have yet to eat from my open case A. the inspection date was April of this year. I look forward to trying it. I'll bet those mashed potatoes would be next level if you put a pack of cheese sauce in them.

It is pretty neat, we use it to keep stuff nice and hot when one of us eats before the other. They have a large one which I am keen to purchase.

Damn , that was a solid ration. Though I think that ecto cooler had CTs name written all over it! That heater bag was pretty killer as well.

A menu I have yet to try. that looks really tasty. I would put the meatballs over the potatoes that would be fantastic. LOL attempt to have a semi healthy lifestyle then you eat a ration LOL. I just realized that from eating these rations I have gained some weight I didn't need. Back to the peanut butter on toast diet for the next week. Thanks for the awesome review.

In the early nineties, we had the bbq meatballs. I remember the first time I had it with the first FRH.... it changed my perception of MRE's.

Interesting the sugar helping with heart burn. That heater bag is so cool. The car one would be awesome for truck drivers and traveling families.

I got a 2021 menu 8 and it had no garlic mashed potatoes but blueberry cobbler. Recent change or packaging mistake ? I was quite disappointed since I don't like the cobbler but love garlic potatoes

oh man!!! i have a hot logic i leave at work for frozen meals ad leftovers. but i never thought of putting my MREs in there!!!! i always used the FRH, and sometimes they dont work well. Definitely doing this tonight wih this exact menu!!!! i can fir the meatballs, potatoes, breadsticks and the cheese in there!! how long do you put them in your Hotlogic to heat up?

It's nice to mix that marinara sauce into potatoes. At least then you don't have to taste them. One of the worst items i've had in MRE.

I had one of those meatballs and marinara and mashed potatoed MREs last night and mine tasted awful. Maybe it was rancid or spoiled or outdated? I had to throw it out. My question is what does the stickers on the box mean if they're red. I'm new to MREs . I didn't want to throw it out but I literally gagged. And could not finish. Hopefully the rest of them I try have a better taste.

I was fortunate to have had quite a few Vietnam vets in my first two units just hanging around for their "20". Those guys imparted fabulous knowledge and field craft to us baby soldiers.

It must depend on the unit. The four I was with we only got 2 per day. But Gschultz claims to have gotten 3, but in his defense he was a lazy guy in the rear of the battle line. Those guys need to be coddled HAHA!

I usually do not care for any of that stuff but I have to say, I think the huge amount of heat that cooker put off definitely made it edible as to where normally I'd just toss the stuff out with even opening it.

I think they were in there for less than 20 minutes, just long enough for me to gather everything for the review and mix the drink. I will say we have left regular food in it for several hours so the other half could have a steaming hot meal after a long day at work.

Again it's double-wrapped, the way how Ameriqual does things." [the MRE is a Sopakco] And that beef stick: notice how high MSG is on the list of ingredients. I probably wouldn't touch that with a 100-foot pole.

Fun Topic. SoPackCo is the only company without their own food manufacturing/processing ability. Everything they get in retort pouches is made by Ameriqual or Wornick...at least Wornick is nice enough to put Sopackco on the packaging. I imagine Ameriqual puts "Packed for SoPackCo as kind of a dig. Totally agree about the "beef" stick. Might as well remove all your internal organs get packed with nitrates and become an Egyptian Mummy

That's to make the stuff last for years. However, I just read an article in the Army Times that the US is rethinking their entire ration program to a fresher, lighter and smaller 1 year shelf life ration for field operations. I imagine regular MREs will still be on the menu for training and disaster relief since they can be stored for so long.
