Great review and tear down. Surprised to see the much advertised LM pasted like this. Upgrading from Clevo as I think this is the end of DTR laptops. I have my eyes on the GE76 but unable to find it anywhere.
I have this laptop, it’s pretty good. Depending on which game, it can push good frames in 4K. It also has a polished feel. MSI is awesome at manufacturing quality gaming laptops
@@gaming_nerd_i_am9969 I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand there is a lot of performance, but the lack of 4K while streaming makes it a regular laptop on that department. The other laptops that come close to it are the Zephyrus Duo 16 (who knows when it will be available) and the Blade 15 Advanced which lacks power but have better screen. If they fix the streaming issue I would be happy even at the price it sits at. How about you?
i got msi ge66 because everyone is talking about how good it is. But after a year of using it, its trash. My fan broke days before warranty ran out. (Ive never dropped it). I repaired my fan and months later my screen broke for no damn reason (no scratch, no broken screen). Display is gone. Got it checked my different technicians and all said that its the manufacturer’s fault. Beside these major issues, my ge66 would lag crazy without charging it. In order for me to actually play a game(any sort of game, even one that dont require high fps) will literally lag. So i had to plug in my laptop all the time. The only thing i can do while its not on charge is watch yt or browse on the internet. And the audacity to say the battery lasts for up to 7hrs is a lie. First 3 months that I got my laptop, battery lasted for about 1-2 when you’re not gaming. Definitely less than an hour if you’re gaming. Another cons, msi customer service is absolutely trash. They dont care about you, they only care about money
After 6 months of using it, I got some BSOD's and after that, the performance dropped significantly. You have 11900 in the cinebench multithreaded, I got something like 1828 on the same test. MSI support in my country just reinstalled windows and called it a day :/ This machine was very powerful, but right now it works like a 6 years old mediocre laptop.
I just got the i7 variation out of thinking that the lower cpu with the 3080ti is a better mix for thernals than the i9.. I wonder if I made a mistake?
@@RichCompMan hmm, not sure about 18-19K. more like 16-17K i've seen at max power. Jarrod Tech just did a great vid comparing the 12th gen and 11th gen and he including a Cinebench power graph worth looking into. He probably didn't have the max fans which is called CoolerBoost (Fn+F8) on the GE76. So it was probably just throttling all the time.
overheats as in during browsing sessions or on youtube? if so 100% return it. If it gets hot while pushing the machine fully then thats really just how laptops are. You can try throttlestop if the laptop will let you. Or use whispermode/other nvidia settings in geforce experience.
Is ge66 i9-3070ti overkill? there is a promo today in Spain for 2.300€. What do you think? (MSI Raider GE66 12UGS-621XES Intel Core i9-12900HK/32GB/1TB SSD/RTX 3070Ti/15.6")
Great review. I'm in Canada and can't find this unit for sale here though. Only see the 16GB RAM variants with the i7 CPU, unless you get the 17 inch model. I've been trying to find a Rtx 3070ti or better 15" laptop with 32gb+ RAM. How long does the battery realistically last on max brightness but with non-gaming use (Photoshop and accounting software)?
Hello! I'm thinking buying the Ge66 12Ugs-237 which have 3070ti, do you think It gonna have the same heating problems? Or which one do you recommend with the same price range and specs?
I will get one of these next week. As soon as it is delivered I will be adding a Cuda 4 TB drive. Any idea if the PCIe is 4.0 for both slots or is it 4.0 and 3.0 secondary. I have seen conflicting specs and reviews. Thanks for a great detailed channel!
For the last few weeks I have been bombarded with ads for this model, but it doesn't seem to be available yet - fail! I am interested, but those thermals are concerning.
Those huge temp variations scream poorly applied liquid metal pad or coverage to me. Thanks for the video! Edit: Just watched to the tear down and holy cow it looks like the CPU heatsink wasn't even making proper contact with that CPU chip. Like the thermal pads they used around the heatsink to protect against LM spillage prevented proper contact. Wow! Also extremely interesting that they opted to keep the heatsink made of copper instead of at least nickel plating it to prevent LM dry out. Or do you think it looks bad because it returned to a solid as you said?
Direct connection is 4: 1x Thunderbolt 4, 1x Type C with display port 1.4, 1x Displayport 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.1. Thunderbolt 4 can support up to 2 monitors via adapter.
I was a bit hyped about the phase changing liquid metal thermal interface compound on the CPU, but your video proves that it is just a gimmick. A really bad one at that. Normally a well pasted CPU with conductonaut will not show extreme uneven core temperatures like yours did out of the box. I'm guessing one or more cores are hitting 100C while the other ones are like 70-80C? The one core hitting 100C will make the entire chip throttle, as CPU sensors/temp will count the highest temp core as its overall temp.
@@GenTechPC Thanks! What about temps and noise? I'd imagine 17 is more silent and less warm underload? I tried comparing the results from your videos but found hard to draw a good conclusion.
Is it worth to buy this one(ge 66 3080 ti +i9 + 2k 240) with those troubles with temperature. Or better to buy ge 66 3080 ti with i7 +2k 240 ? Or it will be better to buy some other laptop? Will be very grateful for advice.
I appreciate you listing the device manager and the refresh rates. I couldn’t find it anywhere in the specs and I didn’t want just a “60” refresh rate. I ordered this fully spec’ed laptop and will receive it next week. I subscribed to your channel for my tech fill. thanks!
@@GenTechPC A score of 16000 is still awfully low for 12th gen i9 12900h, you might be getting the uneven core temperatures, one core thermal reaching the thermal throttle temperature may be causing the entire chip to throttle. The "liquid metal" pad they have is pretty suspect, I recommend finding a way to remove it (looks like a pain in the d*ck - you may have to heat it up to liquify it then remove it while it's still liquid), then repaste with standard liquid metal such as Conductonaut.
GE76's 3080Ti is 150W+ 15W and will have better GPU performance. CPU will be the same but maybe slightly cooler because of the larger chassis. Will do full review once shipment arrives.
@@GenTechPC ohhk because like i don't feel like 3080ti varient is worth buying for me as it is also very expensive then 3070ti varient and i wanted to get a 17 inch so for that GE76 with i7 and 3070ti seems perfect choice i wish msi used new liquid method thing for i7 varient also and in india i9 varient with 3070ti isn't available in india so i guess have to settle for i7 & 3070ti in Ge 76 series
