My ascent of CO. collegiate 14ers Mt. Harvard & Mt. Columbia via their long & rugged connecting ridge on July 19, 2021. Mt. Harvard is Colorado's 3rd highest mountain, and was one of the first collegiate peaks to be named. Mt. Columbia, though less famous, is a fine mtn. in its own right. This journey takes me through the picturesque forests and alpine environs of Horn Fork Basin, to the lofty summit of Mt. Harvard, through the boulder-strewn off-trail stretches along the connecting ridge, and to the top of Mt. Columbia. At the beginning I discuss some of the history surrounding these mountains, and toward the end I explain how in terms of endurance stats and route-finding, this was one of the harder routes I have done. The length and ruggedness of the route has the potential of being a surprise to people, so beware. As always, included are maps and route description. Anyway, enjoy the footage! So this was my 3rd time climbing Mt. Harvard and my 2nd time climbing Mt. Columbia, but it was the first time I had ever attempted to climb both peaks on one occasion via their connecting ridge. It's probably a good thing I didn't attempt this traverse on any of the previous occasions, as I don't think I would have been mentally prepared for the tiring attrition of the off-trail talus hopping and route finding. But on this occasion I came well-intentioned and ready - (even if just barely!). For my video of climbing neighboring collegiate 14er Mt. Yale: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qERBlhVbvjQ.html. For neighboring Mt. Belford to the immediate north: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7orB5P_Tww0.html. For the rugged Missouri Mountain, also to the immediate north: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c4U7zDAJMeY.html. Thanks for watching! -Centennial Treks

Best step by step filming of a trail of any hiking channel I watch. The way you film really shows the trail as you’d experience it yourself and gives you a very good idea of the flow of the routes. Thanks

I appreciate your taking the time to say so. I try to capture all the important points as well as the stretches in between. Thanks for watching!! -CT

You did very well, my friend. A very comprehensive vdo of the whole trail. Me and my buddy did the Mt Harvard- Mt COlumbia thingy without much prep. Got our butts kicked on the traverse since we walked down all the way to the three elk basin and climbed back up. It was a long long long day for me. and climbing down Columbia in the dark was another nightmare...

This was the longest day in terms of time that I have ever spent on a 14er route, being a little longer than the time I climbed the off-trail east ridge route of Mt. Oxford in 2018. It sounds like you had an even longer day though - particularly going down that loose upper section of the Mt. Columbia west slopes trail had to be awful in the dark. Thanks for watching!!

From start to finish, quite an impressive excursion. The meadows are beautiful and the boulder fields look like a lot of fun. Keep up this whole video making thing. You seem to have a knack for it. :)

Hey Outdoor Existential I appreciate you watching this longest video I have yet made. I vaguely recall some time ago we were discussing off-trail routes on a comment board, so I thought here's one he might enjoy. I do like the mtn. climbs that have basins with beautiful meadows - they also often give a reprieve from the steepness. (My next 14er video will feature a mtn. that has very little such reprieve). The boulder fields are......"fun".....(as I watch the footage of them from here on my couch!). Anyway, later.

@@CentennialTreks Always a pleasure CT. I enjoy the boulders for that true off trail sense. Almost like no one has done the exact same route. Anyway, always enjoy having a buddy checking off CO 14ers for our viewing pleasure. Might have to get one on my channel at some point. :) Until then, looking forward to the next vid!

Well, there will probably be up to 2 more months of favorable weather conditions this year.

Thank you - there is just so much to see & talk about, I guess I sort of gave up on brevity!

What an incredible feat. Those endless talus hopping would have driven me crazy. Hope to climb them separately someday

Thanks - yeah, much more of that would have driven me crazy too.

Good little trek! It was exhausting just watching the talus sections. Was the haze due to Northern California fires?

As far as I know, yes - at least in large part.
