Wood routers can do even more work when they are matched up with a variety of accessories or jigs and in this video, I am attaching a custom router base plate to my wood router that will allow me to make more accurate rabbets on boxes, picture frames, and cabinetry or the same plate can be adapted as a circle jig or even a slot cutter for use in making floating mortise and tenon joinery.

I’ve made dozens of router base plates and not once did I grind down screws to locate holes. The stock plate is a perfect template...that plus a Sharpie and maybe a little double-sided tape is all you need!

I agree - it's a bit weird. At one point he says that the large central hole, for the router bit to poke through, doesn't have to be centred, at least for most applications. Then he spends ages getting everything aligned to the nearest micron. Why?

@@chrisengland5523 He was demonstrating. He said that. Though it's not always necessary, as he said for template bushings or other reasons it might be needed in some cases and now we know how.

I like the oversized base plate idea. Getting there could be made easier by using the black plastic base as a template, drilling your holes and chamfering them so the flat head screws are set below the surface of the clear plastic.

One idea that has been kicking around the 'Web for years:- Take the base off, scan & print it (or photocopy if you can find one) then use spray contact (or even pva, just takes longer) to glue it to the clear sheet. A bit of work with a ruler and pen will show where all the centers are. I've noticed quite a few manufacturers even offer full sized template drawings on their web sites.

I made one of these just last week. I used tempered hard board instead of plastic. I didn’t like how the board flexed a little so I mounted a small oak board to stiffen it up. It worked awesome to install a bottom in my box.

For drilling the large center hole, I first drilled a hole slightly smaller than my rabbiting bit diameter, doesn't have to be exactly centered. Then I plunged the router base close to the new baseplate, inserted the bit from the otherside of the baseplate. Then I slowly drew it back through the plastic and let the rabbiting bit cut an exactly centered hole.

I shall order a piece of plastic today! - my use will be mainly for cutting circles. One question - the marking pins for the mounting holes in the plastic . . . couldn't you use the base plate that you removed from the router as a template to mark with a spring punch and then drill through?

Can I ask why are you chose to make the hole in the middle just a bit larger than the piece you were going to use? Why not make it much larger so that anything can fit through it? Thanks!

if you are following a guide on the oustside of your base plate, YOU NEED TO BE SURE IT'S CENTERED TOO!

Hello Sir. I am a big fan of you. I guess I have seen all your clips. I am puzzled how you do those nice cuts on glass. I do the same thing and I do not get results like you. Are you using special bits ? Is it because you do your holes on a drill press ? Can you tell me what kind of bits you are using ? If it is because of drill press , what kind of a drill press should I get ? I am just a DIY hobbyist. I really appreciate your wise experienced in put. Thanks

Wouldn't it be easier just to clamp the plate and mark the holes with thin marker? Seems precise enough.

My initial thoughts were the same as yours as BUT then I realised that he’s ensuring he gets EXACT hole positions......the baseplate I made was via ‘eyeballed’ fine marker pen points and thought these were fine until I later fitted my brass collets/template guides and realised my holes were actually very slightly off and so the collet was not perfectly centred.....hence problems. Having watched this I think I’ll make another one.....it’ll be worth making those sharpened bolts anyway as once made they can be used for other stuff.

Handy tip, put a negative on cutting tip at end of drill as this will stop snatching on break through common when drilling perspex, polycarbonate and brass..

@@williamsmith9026 A negative rake is where you grind the sharp leading edge of a drill parallel to the length so in effect you turn it into a spade drill, if the drill is small its just a little nick but would be more prominent the bigger the drill gets, it stops the snatch on break through which can shatter the plastic, hope this makes it clear William and if not have a look on this site to see if someone is demonstrating it, its typically used in engineering..

Put the screws into your drill chuck threads first.. Go directly to the bench grinder. Makes a better centered point . Fgitdabout the dowel.

I have had issues with acrylic crazing after drilling holes, anyone have a solution to that problem?

Could it be that your drill speed is too high? I had the same issue with 1/4” acrylic on the drill press. When I slowed it down it pretty much eliminated any crazing and/or melting.

Negative rake I should have said, you can use table off hand grinder to do this..
