Use ethanol free and add some sea foam. I always leave gas in mine and have zero problems. I never use regular gas in mine. Always non ethanol or you can do this stuff.

I also would not buy more gas than you need to finish your yard, depending on how often you mow. Maybe a half-gallon at most. Gasoline, especially the ethanol blends, goes stale after about 6 weeks.

Thank you for the excellent tutorial. Took this as an opportunity to teach my two sons (16 & 11) about combustion and how gas engines work. We took apart the unit as you described and discussed the actions of the parts. Put it back together and she fired right up! Proud dad here and the kids think I'm a genious!

Have a mower just like the you are cleaning that won't start have cleaned it all really good. While carb is off shot some starter fluid and it started. Put carb back and hit primer and gas comes out filter and won't start. Any idea why gas come out from filter

Took my carb apart, cleaned it all as shown in the video and reassembled. Still thrums though. I was thinking of changing the fuel out and seeing if that helps and if not then changing the spark plug. You think that should do it?

Good idea. you should always clean out the gas tank too when cleaning the carburetor.

Jeff's Little Engine Service due to lack of time I drained the old fuel and put some new in and it runs a little better in the 2 or 3 mins run I gave it. I adjusted the idle speed slightly by bending the metal plinth for the governor spring and that made a difference. Also replaced a missing hex bolt for the handlebars which was causing it to look lopsided. Next up will be a spark plug and oil change to see if that does the trick.

For anyone else in the same position I managed to fix the issue on mine. I had to remove the plastic white bit that is fixed down into the base of the carb. This bit is not covered in this video but others do cover it. There's a jet "hidden" there which was bunged up. Cleaned it out and it's running sweet again. Thanks

make sure you have a new spark plug, and that the stop cable pulls enough when you push it down.

Thanks for the info. My mower would not start at all. When it was brand new it took like 10 pulls to start. The next season, it wouldn't start at all. I took the carburetor out exactly as shown. Nothing "appeared" wrong but I ran wire through the hole and sprayed everything with carburetor cleaner. When reassembled, the mower started on the first pull. Now I can finally sell it and get rid of it 😁

This just reminds me of a story. The Lowe’s in my town is dumb. I bought a mower from them that they said had huge issues, including bent shaft that it wouldn’t start. I get home, look it over, the shaft was good, okay so that’s not it, then I look at the carb. Turns out the FUEL LINE ISNT CONNECTED. Wow. Alright.

Thanks for the info. Cleaned the fuel jet and it started right up , it starts on the first pull every time now . When new it hesitated to start . Must do as routine maintenance especially when they start surging.👍🏽👍🏽 Very simple, quick fix. Not as hard as it looks, give it a try people.

The Briggs 450e benefits from opening the carb jet to 20 thousandths - a stripped bread wire tie can be used to check that the jet is clear and big enough. Doing this helps the motor run better and cuts down on the need for carb cleanings. 👍

I am so thankful that you made this video, We have been using a push mower for the last 4 year and its near impossible to use on high grass. I recently saw someone throw out a gas mower. I took it home got some carburetor cleaner, checked the spark plug and removed all the excess oil, even cleaned the exhaust that was filled with oil. Well by your video I was able to pull it apart the carburetor and put it back together and now this mower starts with one pull. I now have a gas Mower. Just like the one you have. LOL

Thanks bro this shit worked. I took off the carburetor just like you said cleaned the jet and the inner housing and put the shit back on. Two pumps of the primer and it came on really strong. Thanks I was going to throw this piece of shit in the garbage and go buy me a Honda. All it took was a can of carburetor cleaner and some effort. Saved me 400 bucks.

Here is another thing to check... especially if the onset is sudden, and everything else checks out. These machines have an engine brake kill switch. On mine, there is a cable stop made of plastic on the mower handle. The plastic will break or deform, not allowing the cable to fully disengage the brake/kill mechanism. Some strong zip ties remedied the problem.

WARNING!!: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE FUEL LINE!!! THERE IS NO NEED TO!!! The ENTIRE Gas Tank slides up and off...it's not even bolted down..it just sits on a ridge!! Do that instead of disconnecting the hose because...if you try to take the hose off...like I did...you realise it's STUCK ON THERE VERY TIGHT!!! Then, if you read down in the comments, you see people have leaky hoses now!! Simply pull that gas tank up and off and leave it connected to the Carb. Once you pull it off, you can pour the gas out and you won't have to siphon the gas out with a turket baster like I did. I appreciate the video...but it's important newbies know that taking that fuel hose off and on is almost impossible, and once you put it back on, it might leak. GAS TANK PULLS STRAIGHT UP AND OFF!!! EASY PEASY!!!!

mower wouldn't stay running. came to this video.. I did all this stuff. Pulled out the carburator... Everything was clean inside.. So I started putting everything back together... Mad. Knowing that it's still not gonna stay running... I started that damn mower. And it stayed running. I sat there for a minute with while it's running, with the "gtfoh" face... Nice clean explainations. I appreciate you even telling what size sockets to use. I'm frustrated with my 22" Murray and am so close to purchasing a new lawn mower, but I will do what you suggest and maybe save myself a couple of hundred dollars. Heck, the mower you were working on looks a lot worse than mine. I have to pull the rope about twenty times before it starts. Will do the easy fixes first then start pouring money into a new mower if I cannot get this fixed.

Great video. Didn't fix my problem, though. Nope. Emptied the fuel, took it apart, cleaned the carburetor out, got it all reassembled, and it still wouldn't start. Remembered I hadn't plugged the spark plug connector back in. Realized upon plugging it back in that I had not unplugged it in the first place. It had been unplugged the entire time.... I am not a wise man.

regular octane ethanol free gas if available. Premium gas actually has more ethanol in it.

Wow this was super awsome I have one of these wont start and when u prime it dont pull gas in either so wondering if my float is messed up or carburetor is clog, I'm gonna try n take mine apart hehe. When you open up the carburetor the jet that he mentions is crucial. The entire jet assembly comes out if you pull straight down- it's held in with two o-rings. He doesn't show this in the video. This makes cleaning the brass jet so much easier. Just blast it out with an air compressor from the top down. Once I did that, my lawn mower started on the first pull. I haven't replaced a bulb on these new engines yet On the old ones it is a plastic ring that holds it in place. to remove it you push the tabs in on each side of the ring and then pry it out.

Thank you. I've got the same, or at least similar Murray 21 inch lawnmower, bought at Walmart a few years ago and this was the fix. You were spot on en everything, the best 505 seconds I've spent all month. the symptom was hearing the engine turn over for a few seconds then quickly stalling out even after spraying carb cleaner through the carburetor without the cover on it. 1. I removed the carb as you had instructed, 2. cleaned out the jet you referred to, 3. and re-assembled everything. 4. replaced the yellow foam filter after putting it's housing back on with 4 bolts. The only difference I had was at the start of removing the carburetor filter case, 2 of the bolts were 8mm and the two holding it in place, closer to the inside were 7mm, as you had mentioned.

Question. I did what you said and it worked. However the same issue keep coming back one a while. What exact part is causing this issue? Do I really have to disassemble the whole part once a while. Is this a some kind of design flaw cause this problem?

make sure to clean the gas tank well. Also make sure your gas can (extra gas) is not contaminated. This is where all the contaminates/sediment come from

That is exactly the carb I have. I am kind of thinking about just getting a whole new unit since the one I have was submerged by Harvey and I got a whole house to get unflooded. Hey I really appreciate this video. I have never known a thing about working on anything gasoline motor related. I was able to tear down and fix a weedeater 4.5 briggs and Stratton lawnmower carb and get it working again. In fact I would say it runs better than it did when it was new. It would constantly rev up and down before. After it quit working all together I tore it apart and cleaned it and runs great!

I saw a video where a guy showed that if it's a simple clog in the carburetor, you don't have to take the carburetor off the engine. just drop the bowl. that will expose the main jet. poke the jet with a wire, and then spray carb cleaner in the jet and that's it. put the bowl back on and start it up.

Bought mine used. Fortunately, my mower had a shut off valve for the fuel. I filled the tank before i decided it was time to clean the carb... 🤣 first time ive ever cleaned a carb. Air filter was impacted. Spark plug was also burnt up, that was actually the first thing i took care of. Blew the air filter out, cleaned whole carburetor with carb cleaner. Mower is running better than when i bought it from my buddy. Thanks! Great video!

Jeff I have a 5.50e Briggs and Stratton carburetor that brass jet is that the only thing that gets clogged up on those plastic carburetors? Mind won’t start at all you squirt starter fluid in it it starts and dies

You can take the entire white plastic piece out of the carburetor too. There are more holes up in there.

What does the white nozzle do? Above the fuel line intake, * It goes into the slot but is open and allows air to pass through when the button plunger is pressed? * Is it supposed to connect with a line hose? * Is it supposed to be open unobstructed?

99.99% of the time it is bad gas in the tank and a dirty/ plugged carburetor. Make sure to replace the spark plug too.

I have this exact mower. It shuts off after a few minutes. After a few of those times it eventually won't start. You have given me the knowledge and confidence to attempt to fix it. It didn't solve the problem. It really looks like an overheating issue. After cleaning all the fins involved in the cooling system it still overheats. I am going to try changing the oil and checking the muffler.

Cleaning the carb and fuel tank every once in awhile can help prevent issues but most people only fix it when it doesn't work.

OK, you got the main jet, what about the other jets inside the white plastic housing centre of the float?, whole lot more going on in there.

99% of the time I do not need to mess with the white plastic insert, just clearing the main jet usually fixes the issue

What good does the white nipple do for the primer? It’s open to the air, not going to the fuel tank. I’m confused

I know it seems weird to me too that they did it this way. I believe the white nipple is used when there is a primer button

Sweet, bought a pressure washer with a similar motor. I tried taking apart the carb and cleaning it. Thing was well maintained each winter and just quit. Wasn't getting any gas. I used carb cleaner but it seemed squeaky clean to begin with. It literally quit on me towards the end of last summer. After watching your video I saw you use a copper wire to poke out any debris that may be in the main jet so I thought I'd try one last time and see if it worked before ordering a new carb and it fired right up after I did that. I sprayed carb cleaner directly in that copper piece the first time too. I was at a complete loss. There must have been something stuck in there. That one little extra thing you did was a life saver, thanks so much!

Followed your video all went will mower started right up!..Most time I spent was finding a small copper wire to clean the jet port. Also the jet stem under the float has to slide into a slot so the float can control its movement before snapping float in place. Thank you again

I found that the wire in a twistie tie works perfectly for cleaning the port.

You pop the white oval piece out with a couple of pik tools. On the bottom of it is another brass jet that gets clogged also.

I did exactly what u did to the carburetor and put it back on and gas started leaking out of it. What do u think might be causing it to do that?????

the float or float may nt be working properly. make sure the float hinge pin is "snapped correctly in place"

I was walking home from church today and saw a mower exactly like this one out one the curb so I knocked on the door and asked if they were throwing it away and they said yes and I could have it, and they said it still ran, and it looked great, so I pushed it home and mowed the back yard. 😊 And no, I'm not making this up. It was just a bit hard to start so I watched this video. Very good video by the way. Thank you!

OP, thanks you so much for this video! I have the slightly smaller 300e series motor, but everything was the same. You saved me at least the $150 dollars to replace the cheap mower that was giving me trouble. And now, I feel like I understand how it works a lot more than before. Great video, and I just wanted to say thank you.

Info is right on point ,my copper jet was clogged, cleaned it all up and put it back together with minimal profanity spoken. Fired right up on first pull better than new I swear. Thanks a bunch for the tutorial homie!

Thank you for this. My story is different. My mother's cat passed away this morning, she's an old lady and devastated, as am I. She mentioned the mower, I think to keep her mind off things, how it wasn't running. After a quick trip to autozone and doing a full carb cleaning I was able to get it to run great and mowed the lawn. It was something to occupy my mind and I believe it brought a small light to her. I hope this story brings you some light as well. God bless.

Amusingly, removing the fuel hose was the worst part for me. That thing did not want to let go. To put it kindly, I am not mechanically inclined, but your video and 20 minutes has my lawn mower running. Thanks so much.

Don't feel bad--that was the worst part for me, too! But once I got over the fear of breaking something, the rest was easy!
